Special teams was hideous in '05, and everybody knew it. Brandon allowed it to miraculously get even worse last year. I don't think the deficiency has to do with Brandon's competitiveness. He thought he could fix it in '06 with 2 freshman kickers that were hyped greatly but were never given the support to do their jobs.

I don't think any coach is going to show much in a spring game, pre-season or in a blowout. There will be plenty of time to work on ST's in front of fewer eyes when practice starts. Not too many formations or plays need perfected on ST's.

I think the initial response as they prepared for '07 was that every or nearly every coach was going to have a hand in special teams. The whole staff was initially put in positions of responsibility to solve it. Kind of like throwing everything and the kitchen sink at the problem.

I'm sure he looks at rankings as well and anytime you are dead last in any category by evaluation or stats you will work hard to correct it. You don't become a D-I head coach (or any level) by being passive, he is obviously competitive.

I'm still not sure what you're getting at. Just because Brandon is competitive, doesn't mean he has a clue how to fix special teams. If he did, he would have done it before now. My mother-in-law is awfully competitive too. You should see her play a casual game of cranium -- we're talking intensity in ten cities. I don't think she has a clue how to teach kick coverage either.

Your mother-in-law doesn't get to hire a staff to help her. I'm sure Brandon will find someone on his staff capable of improving this situation, his future depends upon it.

I'll be the first to admit I've got orange and brown glasses on early in the season. I really don't think it is fair to make judgement based upon the spring game. The focus is on offensive and defensive positions/depth charts during that time of the year not on a full out game.

I'm a little scared that it has taken him this long to actually HIRE a special teams coach, despite the issues we've had the past few seasons. Hopefully now that he has hired a STs coach he got a good one. If he didn't hire well it could be the end of his tenure.

I don't disagree with that, hammb. I think Coach Brandon understands what's at stake. It's the nature of the business. Ya gotta win...and our ST's were the absolute worst in the nation last year. ST blunders cost us dearly in so many games...That is unacceptable.

Coach Bird has his work cut out for him but let's give the guy a chance to do some things. It can't get any worse than 2006.

This is shaping up to be a very important year for Coach Brandon and I want to see him get us back to the top...How will he tackle the problems from the last few seasons?

It's my own Pale Ale. I'm still taking applications for brand name to market it under

It was a pretty damn good brew too. Light & crisp, with a ton of Cascade hop character. It's younger brother is in the keg now, getting some much needed CO2. This new one will be much darker though, due to the fact my brewshop didn't have some of my intended malts and I had to improvise on the fly

Thanks hammb, if it tastes half as good as it looks you have a winner. I'm going to go settle for a Yuengling in a plain frosted mug, it'll have to do. If I could humbly suggest Zulu Breulu for a name. Or Zu Bru?

It'll be a nice little prelude to all the draft Yueng I'll be consuming tonight.
