JoeFalcon wrote:In terms of the high number of fouls we usually draw in general, there seems to be two schools of thought.

The first is that the referees disliked DD's demonstrative "Bob Knight" sideline behavior and penalized the players accordingly. The time when he called for the firing of the MAC Officiating Director inflamed the issue and hardened their dislike of him despite his later apology.

The second is that the calls are warrented due to slow-footed and/or out of position players. (The position that, to his credit, Dakich publicly took)

I'll take the easy way out and say it was a combination of both.

We've gotta remember too, that Louis Orr played 9 years in the Association as a POST PLAYER.

:-) This could be REALLY fun!!! I'm so psyched for hoops....

While it was explained very well, to pass anything off as an excuse except our lack of defensive position, athleticism and absolute refusal to "hide" his chosen "athletes" in a zone defense or protect them, Dan left his players often times no other choice but to foul.

If you think D-1 officials are that pettty that they don't have enough of their own ego issues to purposefully call a game against a specific coach, then there's no logical argument anyone can attempt to make on this board. Particularily a coach who blatantly took himself out of many games in his last 5 years and was bailed out mercifully in many others by the same said officials. Hammb and I can describe time and time again when players were actually tackled and taken into the pep band with no call at the end of games to preserve a Dakich home win.

Few teams get the homer treatment as much as Dan Dakich led teams in the last 5 years. Officiating was the least of our concern.

I think officials see so few teams playing man to man for 40 minutes that they saw our d as being more physical than it actually was. Dan benefitted from some home cooking, but I don't think that's unusual in the MAC. MAC officials are crap...giving the home team outllandish breaks with the game on the line is the hallmark of crappy officiating.

I'm anxious to see coach Orr work the officials. He has a resume as a player and coach that is unmatched in the MAC. I'm thinking he'll know how to leverage that...

I loved Windy and Along Comes Mary and a lot of their lesser known stuff. Had no idea Orr was in the group. My understanding was they didn't even play their own guitars on record much less had anybody playing post. Is that a rythym instrument or more like a sackbut?

I fully anticipate growing pains for the first 2 years b/c of the "talent" that Coach Orr is inheriting, but it seems to me that Dakich holdovers and mainstays like Erik Marshall and Dusan have been put on notice with our first couple of recruits in the Louis Orr era.

Calhoun and Medlock finally fit the profile of the athletic combo forward that OU and Kent and Akron have been excelling with for years. The same type of athlete that seemed out of the realm of possilbility with Dan in charge.

I have watched Joe Jakubowski several times over the last 3 years and he will fit in well, I believe, providing minutes at both guard spots. It'll be nice to have a guy on the outside who can punish defenses that sink into a zone b/c they were no outside threats.

I really believe we are turning the corner.

Anyone want to argue that Hamblet, Moten, Knight, Miller and Otis aren't our best 5? Miller would be a small 4, but I really believe that's our best 5.

Marschall is a fine offensive player, but is not a D-1 athlete capable of defending most, if any other 4s in the MAC. He would be a decent spot/role player in my opinion rather than depend on him for 25+ minutes a night.
I couldn't have said it better myself. Finally were getting the kind of athletic forwards that can move and defend and score. Since the Calhoun kid is quite slim at 190 , he looks to make a nice 2-3 combo guard rather than a 4. Man, Orr is n't messin around and I like it. :)

I love these quotes too.

"Calhoun headed to the MAC
A player with some high-major offensive skills is headed to the MAC -- 6-foot-7 senior Austin Calhoun of Southfield has committed to Bowling Green. Calhoun was all the rage in June, staking claim to top 10 status in the class of 2008 with a lights-out shooting performance at the Izzo Shootout. With his ability to do everything from defend the post to knock down shots from 22 feet, Calhoun has three-position potential at the next level."

I too have never believed that a DD vendetta among refs resulted in excessive calls against us. The fouling was due to the philosophy of defense, the man-to-man defense, and a frequent lack of depth (guys got tired).

A lack of athleticsm wasn't the problem. Trent Jackson, Erik Crawford, Eric Marcshall, and Kevin Netter all had horrendous foul problems, but all of them are good athletes.

with Orr being a syracuse guy under boeheim... its hard to see us playing anything but zone. That said... the opposing team will have a much tougher time getting inside and giving Otis the opportunity to foul.

95% of Otis's fouls came on either our guards getting TRASHED off the dribble and jumping into Otis and inevitably going flying into the bleacher (simple physics, really), or along the same lines where his brute strength made a play seem more physical than it really was.

As for Marschall, yes his defense seemed weak at times but he will see the floor a lot yet this year on account of his offensive skills. Also, just one thing I noticed was that the team did much better when he was on the floor (regardless of his personal statistics). That could be attributed to the fact that he was really the only key contributor besides Samarco from a year ago but time will tell on that one[/quote]

I cannot wait to watch this team. I was so tired of the motion offense, I'll just be happy to see something different this year.
I am not sure that anyone had more physical talent then Netter. He was a tremendous athlete for his size.

I don't understand...it's illogical to think that officials would hold a negative bias against a certain coach, but it is possible to make biased calls in their favor?

(Most) officials are not animatrons; they're human beings with human emotions that can work for or against coaches. It's a game within the game at every level of basketball.

Given the new schemes along with Orr's resume and personality, it'll be interesting to see how much difference we'll see.

I think that the fans were also part of the problem...I have no problem in admitting the disdain I layed on the refs everytime they stepped foot in AA. I was even thrown out of the game against Akron two seasons ago for something I didn't even do. As a ref, however, you need to be paying attention to what is on the floor...NOT what is on the sidelines (Especially if you're an NBA ref who is trying to fix the game). Honestly though, I think there will be a great change in the way things get called at AA now that Louis Orr is the head coach.

I almost completely agree with you. If you would have ended that statement with "From the neck down," then that would be accurate.

The neck up does not constitute talent. Talent, to me, is pure physical ability.

I'm not sure Netter had the same physical abilities as Polk, because he lacked the muscle & size to really battle down low. He was tall, ran the floor well, and was a tremendous athlete. He also had some range on his shot that we rarely got to see him utilize.

Still, I think OP has more talent as a post player. He's got the strength & size to play both ends of the court in the post. He's also not the slug you would expect for a guy of his size. Losing some of that weight you'd think would make him gain some quickness as well.

Netter was a guy who would probably been more effective had we not asked him to play the center spot, but allowed him to branch out towards the perimeter.

You really can't comapre Netter to Polk. As hammb has pointed out, they have entirely different skill sets. I think Netter would have been very effective as a PF facing the basket. His length would have allowed him to shoot over most zones and he had the quickness to take other big guys off the dribble.

You could have done a numnber of things with a zone to hide his defensive limitations.

Otis is a rarity for the MAC. A wide body with some athleticism. Coach Orr will be doing jhimself a HUGE favor if he can get Otis to play to his potential.
