Doyt hosting HS game
The Findlay paper announced that Findlay HS will play St.Johns at the Doyt.

Great way to utilize the new turf. If feasible they should do this every Friday night and promote the athletic events at BGSU to death on the video board at every timeout.

It's cool that they're on the ball with hosting other events at the Doyt, but I kinda hoped that the Falcons would be the first to take the field at the "new" DLP.

I'm guessing the University is going to take a bit of money from ticket sales for this. While it would have been cool to see our team be the first, I can't help but think how cool it's going to be for some of those players to play on a D1 football field.

Money of no money in rent, I think this is a great PR move to get future students, future student-athletes and the general public from NW Ohio on campus and into our renovated facility. If 50 people from Friday return on a Saturday then things are moving the right direction.

If I were the athletic department I would be there selling tickets to anyone in the stands for our home opener for $10.00 and give them a parking voucher. This is a great opportunity for some exposure for the department and University. I would love to see that field in use every Friday night with two different teams each week. With their recent success I can see Otsego playing a game or even two in Doyt Perry. Hopefully we will also get a playoff game year as well.

Completely agree with this promotion. It's the Journey... wrote:If I were the athletic department I would be there selling tickets to anyone in the stands for our home opener for $10.00 and give them a parking voucher. I expect a good crowd for the first game students are back and the curiousity of the SEBO and new turf. Wouldn't it be great if the freshman saw a packed house on opening night as their first image of Falcon football?

Good to see some creative use of Doyt but you will also be faced with the embarrasing dilemma that the Glass Bowl used to see when it hosted St. Johns-St. Francis. The HS game may well outdraw the Falcons first game, especially if they get the curious who want to see the new turf at the earliest opportunity. Nevertheless, any payday is a good payday.

Great Idea
I think this is a great idea. While I would have preferred to see the Falcons be the first to play on it I think this will give the athletic department a chance to find any little bugs with the new turf and have it taken care of before the first game.
I think the athletic department should give away a predetermined amount of tickets to the first 500 fans or so to BG's first home game. Take the hit financially and just get people in the stands. Then maybe they will continue to want to come. I think the Findlay area would be a great focus for BG since St. John's is so close to Toledo.
A weekly Friday night high school game would be a great idea or work with the local high schools to have a Saturday afternoon game when the Falcon's are playing away.

There are NCAA regulations regarding targeting HS students with discount/free tickets. Not sure what the details are, nor what would fly, but there could be some restrictions on doing that. It's the Journey... wrote:If I were the athletic department I would be there selling tickets to anyone in the stands for our home opener for $10.00 and give them a parking voucher. Not sure if you target HS football fans versus HS students. I think you'd be okay, because I think the regulation is something along the lines of whether or not you offer the same deal to the general public, which obviously we would to anyone that attended that HS game.
I cannot figure out the majority of the NCAA rules, so who knows.
They should put Otsego in the Doyt for their annual loss to Elmwood.

Instead of "targeting" high school students with tickets you could just announce during timeouts that home opener tickets are on sale for half price. This would get the students and the parents in the area. The parking voucher is a GREAT idea because what they charge is rediculous.
I think getting playoff games was one of the reasons BG decided to go with the turf. It's a million dollar cost now but getting D-1 high school playoff games gets them some money too. It will take awhile but they will see their money back and more. They were in line for some HS playoff games until the Mud Bowl that was Miami/BG.
I'm loving the new turf and all the opportunities that come with it!

Yes it would. It would be a lot easier to get them back for the rest of the games as well. I think the Home Opener will be well attended...FalconTurf wrote:Completely agree with this promotion. It's the Journey... wrote:If I were the athletic department I would be there selling tickets to anyone in the stands for our home opener for $10.00 and give them a parking voucher. HS games at DLP.....
This is great and so soon that they've already lined up a game with a big HS football rivalry St. Johns and Findlay. Its great for the fans , mainly for Findlay fans as they won't have to travel near as far as they do when playing St. Johns at home in Toledo. This FieldTurf will pay big dividends over the long run no doubt.

I'll toss my inflation adjusted two cents in and agree with the above comments.
I think its excellent in every possible way. It instantly establishes that the University is indeed acting on the idea it talked about, not dragging its feet for years afterward.
It is good to see a BG alum at St. Johns taking his team south to play Findlay, rather than another game at UT. It would not shock me if somebody at St. Johns actually wants to play outside of Toledo much more often for games like this. It was/is their home game, and they are coming south to play it. Logical since it is Findlay, but given they otherwise play at Toledo-Rogers, ick.
I think there are more than a few schools that want, and need another venue than UT's Glassbowl. I would not be shocked if schools start knocking on the door to play at BGSU, because it allows a lot of non-traditional non-league games that otherwise weren't possible. BGSU makes for a very good middle-ground for a lot of schools now.
And for the Findlay folks, good to have them coming to BGSU. It might be the only time the Findlay paper mentions Doyt Perry Stadium all year.
The game instantly announces to all NW Ohio programs, that Doyt L. Perry Stadium is open for business. I think we could see a lot of games hosted in BG much sooner than expected.
Oddly, I think a fair number of BG locals will come to the games too. Its like having a traveling road show, there is a novelty to it. As for BGHS, it would be nice to see them play a few early games and such at BG, but we should not be over bearing about it.
