Why not? ESPN wants MAC content for ESPNU, the BG/UT rivalry has produced some great games for them so ESPN calls the shots on when we play it....they moved the 2003 game to accomodate ESPN...why is this so different?1987alum wrote:>>>>snip<<<Flipper wrote:Well...he could have said "the league does what ESPN asks and they told us to play the game on Friday so it's not like we had any choice in the matter".....would anyone have been any happier with that?
But to say that ESPN thinks the rivalry has surpassed the boundaries of NW Ohio and deserves to be seen nationwide, so we're putting it on ESPNU? Nobody is buying that.

It's not the fall that hurts...it's when you hit the ground.
Well, it looks like we now have a new topic for Ask the AD. This was in the Blade today. I hope this isn't serious.

Personally, I like the idea of the Friday or Saturday after Thanksgiving for this game. Trying to get time off on a Tues or Wed of that week is difficult. This way, enjoy Thanksgiving and get to the Doyt the next day.

So? It's still a national network....I guess I just don't see the point in trying to separate ESPU from the other networks when the decision to move the game to Fri afternoon was made within the framework of a larger, comprehensive deal with ESPN.
I don't really have a problem wiht GC tyring to spin this the way he did...I see it as simply putting the best possible face on the ugly truth of MAC scheduling, the Universities don't really call their own shots.

Also if you read between the quotes there ESPN "wants" the game and if both of the teams performed better last season ESPN would assign it to a more desirable ESPN network.
By "allowing" ESPN to outpost us to the U for this years game we could say get ESPN exposure again when both teams are at full strength. Heck, that could even happen this year if both teams are undefeated or something ESPN could still move the game over to ESPN or ESPN2. It keeps us in good graces with Bristol and unless they moved the game to 7am on Thanksgiving I'll be cool with it.

A dream season would be both Toledo & BG going into this game undefeated, then the Falcons blasting them in the season finale and again in the MAC title game.Dayons_Den wrote:Also if you read between the quotes there ESPN "wants" the game and if both of the teams performed better last season ESPN would assign it to a more desirable ESPN network.

But you're right, DD, even if both teams are having very good seasons, they could easily slide this to the Deuce.

And if that happened there would be a decent chance they would move the day like they did a few years ago Fri. to Sat., if memory serves, which would then start a hell storm of angry fan comments. Sometimes you just can't win for winning. . .1987alum wrote:A dream season would be both Toledo & BG going into this game undefeated, then the Falcons blasting them in the season finale and again in the MAC title game.Dayons_Den wrote:Also if you read between the quotes there ESPN "wants" the game and if both of the teams performed better last season ESPN would assign it to a more desirable ESPN network.

Saturday after Thanksgiving is heads and shoulders above the Friday game. You're not competing with the biggest shopping day and gives people another day to spend with family.

I thought the answer to the Toledo game question was somewhat weak. ESPN is sooo high on the game that they moved it to ... ESPNU? Odd logic, to say the least.[/quote]
I think he knows that time for this game needs to be moved to the front end of the season for our home games against them...its just stupid to play this game at home that week.

MACMAN:
So are you saying you'd like to see what has become a "traditional" rivalry game changed? Thought you were in favor of keeping our traditions.... (and YES, I DO know that we played UT earlier in the season years ago....(It doesn't say , "Class of 61" for nothing!)
Education our Challenge, Excellence our goal. (look it up)
