Kelly explained his reasoning in dollars: Central Michigan came home from the Motor City Bowl with a $75,000 deficit. Cincinnati, which he coached in the International Bowl, came home to find a $1.6 million check from the Big East.

"Does that not mean you can't once in a while have a team pop out? No, I think you definitely can," Kelly said. "But on a consistent basis? Look at Bowling Green."

The Falcons won 37 games in four seasons (2001-2004), the first two under Urban Meyer and the last two under his successor, Gregg Brandon. They have won 10 games over the past two years.

"Bowling Green was beating Big Ten teams left and right three or four years ago," Kelly said. "Gregg Brandon is a heck of a football coach. He didn't just all of a sudden get dumb. But they're nowhere where they were. It's because you can't keep progressing your program because of the lack of the monies. Cincinnati is able to reinvest its dollars into its program. It's a huge disparity.

"It's a little like the Yankees and their ability to free-spend, compared to a small-market team like the Twins that has to develop its talent. You've got to develop your talent in the MAC and hope that can offset the big-market, high-profile guys."

Cincinnati also just signed a home-and-home with Oklahoma for the coming years, using Paul Brown Stadium to their advantage.

Wow, really interesting article. I would have to say their is some truth to that as well, but I don't know if Cinncy really put BG to shame money wise..?

Cincy=Big East....Big East = BCS...BCS= Huge $$$ advantage.

Wow why is the money like that? The MAC is pretty equal conf IMO!

Whoa, Problem there. Cincy is in the Big East, not CUSA (Joined in 2005, with UofL). It got a big check because there was a lot of money to split in the conference following the bowl games, including a BCS bowl. The MAC however only split 3 small bowl game revenues.
What it does show is that even when you play in a similar level of bowl game, there is a big difference in net profit/loss if you are in a NonBCS conference compared to BCS conference

That really is an interesting article -- even if it kind of depressing. You have to wonder if MAC schools can ever really compete when you see those kind of dollar figures.
I thought the comment about competing for recruits with the "bottom feeder" teams from conferences was interesting. I've always thought that when the Big 10 started letting teams go to bowls other than the Rose Bowl back in the 70s, MAC recruiting took a hit. Suddenly, you could stay in the Midwest and didn't have to go to OSU or Michigan to get a nice bowl trip. Kind of took the luster off the MAC's bowl game arrangements at that time.
I confess I haven't studied the BCS payout system much. If a MAC team "pulled a Boise State" and managed to get to a BCS Bowl, would all the MAC schools benefit monetarily, or just the school that made the trip?

I believe the bowl payouts are essentially divided. First the team playing in the bowl takes enough out of the payout to cover their expenses. The surplus is sent to the league office. The surplus dollars from all of those bowl games are pooled and then divided up to each of the conference members.

I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure that's how it goes for the MAC, and most other conferences as well.

So basically, if some MAC school were to pull a Boise St. it would result in over a million in revenue for every MAC school! That is how Cincy made their $1.6 million...they got a cut of a BCS game revenue.

He left CMU for a place that finished 89th in attendence. They could only convince 20,373 apparently bored people to show up for games despite a winning record and a location smack dab in the middle of a major metropolitan area. They are in the Big East for one reason and one reason only: basketball.

See how Mr. Money Bags likes being turned down endlessly by the top tier recurits after trying to convince them how "big-time" he is.

Don't you think he is just going to use Cincy as a stepping stone to a bigger job, just like Mark D'Antonio did? If he gets Cincy to a bowl game or two, he will be coaching in the Big 10 before you know it. He left CMU because he is going to make more money, have more resources to work with and he felt he would be in a better position for a better job. Does any of this sound familiar? (Urban Meyer, anyone?) Why are any of us surprised anymore by coaches who do this and believe the crap they say when they do it?

Cincy is a sports whore. They'll do whatever, with whomever. They buy their way to any and all things they get. Sadly it works for them.

I don't want to push the topic in another direction, but I'm not going to buy 100% of winning 10 games in two years as being strictly a money issue. In any case, time will tell. The MAC as a conference hasn't been playing its best football for a few years now. I worry that it could become a trend like what we saw with basketball, where we had world beaters, only to see the entire league melt down. But its a cycle, we'll see the MAC bounce back again, and the process will begin anew.
