New Helmets
Tinkering and a complete overhaul are two different points. Having a conformed look throughout the university is a valid reason. However, what sport is BG most known for? It is not girls cross country or even girl's basketball. It is football plain and simple. You mention Bowling Green to people around the country and the first thing out of their mouth is football. This new AD is simply wanting to make a change to mark his arrival at BG. He is not an alumnus and has no vested interest in BG other than a paycheck and resume update. If he really wanted a conformed look throughout the university, then model it after the taditional falcon logo. Why mess with the football tradition?
Furthermore, stating that comparing BG to the big boys is ridiculous. Sure you cannot compare to them in resources, but you certainly can compare to them by showing respect to tradition and honoring past success. Michigan has the ugliest helmets in the country. So bad that Bo Schembecler actually wanted to change them following his hire. He found out real quick that that was not an option. Tradition would not let him. Usually, teams do overhauls when their teams suck i.e. Kent St, Kansas St, Akron, Ohio, Marshall, Rice etc. However, BG has always been at the top or near the top of the MAC for the last 30 years. It has the second best all-time winning percentage in the MAC and has won the second most league titles. Therefore, it is evident, that BG's tradition warrants respect and in its own right is just as impressive as the Oklahoma's, Ohio State's, Alabama etc.
Thus, the question remains. Why would this AD mess with tradition? The previous ADs did not. So why is he? It is not a uniform look. That is the politically correct answer. The correct answer is to put a stamp on his arrival and make his mark. Hopefully, the next AD will realize the stupidity of this decision and make amends!

Dr Sooner,
Thanks for your input and it's good to see ya here again. In talking with the AD, I was told our merchandise sales have dramatically improved with the new logo. At the MAC level, we need as many resources and income as possible. If the new logo is causing more people to purchase BG gear and wear the colors, so be it. Nothing gets me more fried at work when I see one of my fellow BG grads walk in with an Ohio State hat and shirt on...then the guy starts asking me questions about BG. Here's a clue for ya...Actually FOLLOW your alma mater. LOL!
Always good to get an opinion from someone outside the BG circle. I see the Sooners are primed for another run at a national title. Good luck in 2007.
GO FALCONS!!!

Actually, the previous AD set the wheels for this in motion, coming out with about 12 different versions of logos, new and old. The new guy just grabbed the one he liked best and made a definitive statement that this would be our logo.Dr.Sooner wrote:Thus, the question remains. Why would this AD mess with tradition? Honestly, the "peek-a-boo" logo has kind of grown on me. The full-fledged Spaceghost is still a little "meh".

In case you didn't know it, BG won a national title in hockey. Around these parts, many folks think of BG because of the hockey. (I'm not one of them thoughDr.Sooner wrote:what sport is BG most known for? It is not girls cross country or even girl's basketball. It is football plain and simple.
Just to clarify, the new "retail" logo was introduced several years ago when BG alum Paul Krebs was AD. The current AD has just taken the ultimate step of unifying the BG look by going with one logo/one font for all BG athletics.Dr.Sooner wrote:Thus, the question remains. Actually, reading your explanation (and something I thought of in the wee hours last night), this is probably where the "unifying under one logo" comes from. GC came here when we had the traditional, the "new" traditional, the Spaceghost, and the peek-a-boo all in play, not to mention a number of different "official" font presentations.
He picked out the peek-a-boo, and we're plastering it on everything. Given the option with the way things were headed, I like the call in that regard. The "BG" in the logo puts the name in people's faces, even if they *did* know that the LT Falcon belonged to BGSU.

Dr Sooner...I appreciate your input, but you really should get up to speed on our situation before calling for people's heads. As others have pointed out, the current AD did not begin the transition from the old logo...he's merely consolidating the melange of new marks first rolled out by the old AD. I don't think this is a mistake...Pepsi has one mark, GM has one mark, Sony has one mark...all of those companies have had a larger impact on society than BG sports...and yes, even OU football , so it makes sense to go with one trademark.
The new logo is IMHO, superior to the old one. Frankly, I have a very hard time believing anyone in the USA will have a problem recognizing us because we no longer have the barely visible, discernable-as-a-falcon-head to-only-some-of-the-people logo on our helmet.
BTW...we don't have "girls" playing anything here. We have Falcons playing here. Some of them are men, some of them are women, but they're all Falcons (for life)

It's not the fall that hurts...it's when you hit the ground.
The point I was trying to make is that this is not the first time we changed logos or helmets, and change is common in the MAC compared to bigger conferences. Most of the helmet changes in big schools were colors make letters bigger and changing logos. Personally I think the new logo is better and will be recognized better.
"You cant tell me NOTHIN!"

I stand corrected then. I made an assumption and I was wrong. I am just sad to see tradition swept aside for the all mighty dollar. I always felt BG had one of the coolest logos in the country. Very sad to see it go!
Hopefully, Bowling Green will win the MAC this year and the BG interlocked will catch on nationally.

With that being said I sure hope you'd be open to getting rid of the money-controlled, BCS structure that enables the Big Boys to get richer and fatter and us mid-majors pick at scraps which cause our teams to LOSE money if they go to a Bowl Game...Dr.Sooner wrote:I am just sad to see tradition swept aside for the all mighty dollar.
