Sanders Updates from Berea

Post by hammb »

Just looking through the camp notes for this morning's practice some good news for Sanders.

Not sure how many of you are keeping tabs on the Browns WR situation, but I said at the beginning of camp that he was a longshot to make the roster. Basically they've got Edwards, Jurevicius, Wilson, Cribbs, and Tim Carter all with quite a bit invested in them. They MAY carry 6 WRs, but I figure the number will likely only be 5.

Well the way things have gone over the past couple weeks is that Edwards & Jurevicius are safe, obviously. However; Wilson, Cribbs, and Carter have all shown they could not catch a cold. Wilson was a 2nd round pick last year so I don't think they'll give up on him just yet. Cribbs is their KR man, but its looking like he won't really contribute on the offense. They won't cut him, but his inability to grasp the WR role may open them up to keeping 6 WRs. Carter is who they got in the Droughns trade, but it is looking like he is definitely battling for a roster spot; same problems he had in NY.

So anyways, it really looks like the Browns may just keep 6 WRs, and 2 spots are basically up for grabs. Even if they only go with 5 that final spot is definitely still up for grabs.

So that brings me to today's practice report. Apparently most of the veterans were sent home, but the youngsters still practiced today in the facility due to the rain. There were a number of Steve Sanders mentions in today's practice report, so I thought I'd share them here:
Wide receiver Steve Sanders met with a group of children from East High School in Cleveland this morning. Sanders discussed his youth and what it is like to be in the position he is in, a potential player in the National Football League.

· More Sanders. Crennel talked about Sanders following practice and noted he was a player the team liked last season and couldn’t keep. But, Sanders went to NFL Europe, worked hard and has come back an even better receiver, and the head coach added Sanders has a chance to make this roster.

· Rookie receiver Syndric Steptoe and Steve Sanders hauled in nice passes in tight coverage in drills this morning, with the Sanders grab being one which caught the attention of the coaching staff, as he positioned his body, and swiveled up the sideline.

Just thought I'd share that with the group, I'm sure we're all rooting for Steve...he's got the NFL Size, no doubt. Sounds like coach Crennel is very happy with his growth as a player this past offseason too.

Very good news. I'll still cross my fingers quite a bit on it, but it sounds like he's getting a good, fair look.

Good luck, Steve!

It probably doesn't hurt that Sanders is probably getting some reps with Quinn. Most guys in his spot are getting throws from crappy QBs who don't give the WR much chance to show his skills. Good Luck to Steve!

The Practice blurb noted that Quinn was the only QB that was asked to practice today. Sounds like he's been taking a lot of reps. They need to get him up to speed and starting ASAP, because Frye & Anderson have proven their sucktitude.

Dang, I was kinda hoping I would find a definition for sucktitude in the dictionary, but alas, I did not. But, they have stupid definitions like EVOO (gee, thanks for making the english language even more stupid, Rachel Ray).

As a Brown's fan, I sure do hope Steve makes the roster and plays on Sunday's. Even though the offensive package that they run is usually some form of 2-back with a TE, with the way the QBs are playing teams will stack up against the run and they will have to pass with 3 or 4 receiver sets. Steve's abilities will be very advantageous to the Browns, especially if Frye or Anderson are playing. With his size, he should be able to reach all of the crappy passes those two dish out.

Yeah I hope Sanders makes it. If he doesn't then having the NFL Europe experience and good compliments from the coach may carry weight for either next year or a different team. But I'd rather see Sanders keep wearing orange and brown!

As I alluded to Saturday night, Steve's in a pretty good spot for his situation, with the heir apparent at QB still taking a number of snaps with the third and fourth teamers. Not only does he get better passes to pull in as was mentioned, but if he can build a relationship with Quinn, he might be in a spot to ride his coattails onto the roster for an extent.

Steve mad a real nice catch over the middle in the Browns last TD drive Saturday night. Granted, the coverage was designed to funnel him to the middle and the db's were playing loose to prevent the long score, but he still made anice extenison and grab on a pass that seemed a touch high.

On the topic of ex-falcons, a bunch of mysiblings are Columbus residents. After watching the arena playoffs, they were stunned that Cole Magner isn't in the NFL someplace....of course thery're Buckeye fans too, so they probably remember him from the 2003 game as well, but the point reamins valid, Cole should be in the NFL.

Absolutely. I can't believe no NFL team has nabbed Magner yet.

He was real close to making Atlanta a few years back. I remember D Hall being impressed and rooting for him to make it. He was catching everyting thrown to him. In one of the final preseason games, he fumbled a punt during a rain storm. I would hope that one play didn't hurt his chances.

He definitely has the smarts and hands. He should be at an NFL camp.

You'd figure since Atlanta doesn't have any good receivers that they would have held on to Magner. I'm sure between cutting him and trading Matt Schaub that organization is very high on "what ifs" to think about.

I was reading that article at lunch. It makes me more proud to be a Falcon. Keep it up Steve!
