Actually, lets introduce cards for the PA announcer, so he can get the names and yardage correct. That would be a "new tradition" I'd welcome.

Good lord. If I had known this post would cause such a storm I probably wouldn't have posted it. Although, I guess every other thread that has been started in the last month should have been a clue.
Look, I'm not saying Sweet Caroline is going to inspire any mosh pits or anything. I'm just saying it gives people something to sing/say/yell between periods when most of the noise/energy dies down and rarely comes back to the same level. Are there songs that would better accomplish the task? Sure. The only difference is that we asked them to play Sweet Caroline because we liked the song. Like something else? Walk up yourself and ask them to play something different.
Honestly, there are a few of those "New Traditions" I do like and a few I don't. When it all comes down to it, as long as there are people in the seats making noise for the Falcons, does it really matter exactly what hand motion/chant people are doing?

Personally, I don't care about any of them, except changing the words to Ay-Ziggy-Zoomba. It's stupid, and needless. They do not have to ruin our "actual" traditions in some half-assed attempts at creating "new" traditions (which as mentioned is an oxymoron anyways).
As for the rest of it, I really don't care. I don't think any of them will really catch on, so it doesn't matter anyways. I do hate the Falcon screech just because it makes my ears hurt, but I've grown used to that over the years.
In the end none of this will get new kids to the games, or have them make more noise at the games. A winning team is what it will take to do that...or selling beer...

Instead of the canned screech, just let Freakling 2 do it. His is better anyway.
And as long as we never have to hear that freakin stupid chicken dance song in Doyt Perry Stadium, I'm fine....except changing the words to AZZ. I'll sing along but sing the correct words. Thank You.
BTW, they ought to drop Neil Diamond and jam TESLA.

It's a song that most people only know three notes and make every attempt to sing them in a way that gaurantees a spot on the worst of American Idol show. What about Rock and Roll Part II, or Jump Around, or The Final Countdown? All of those songs are high energy. If Sweet Caroline is high energy for the end of the third quarter then lets add to that and play a Bach piano concerto at the end of the first quarter!
We are playing The Final Countdown this year. Others that have been added are Rock Rock This Party (every body dance now), and The Time Warp.
Something I suggested to Dr. Hayward the other day was that we play Night On Bald Mountain every time a team enters the red zone. She seemed to like that idea, so we may be hearing that either this year or next also.
Yeah right girl!

Why don't they bring back "Roll Out The Barrel"?Peregrinner wrote:Look, I'm not saying Sweet Caroline is going to inspire any mosh pits or anything. we play Beer Barrel Polka after every game. Alma Mater, Aye Zig (if the team wins), and then Beer Barrel.1987alum wrote:Why don't they bring back "Roll Out The Barrel"?Peregrinner wrote:Look, I'm not saying Sweet Caroline is going to inspire any mosh pits or anything. ALSO.. From what I remember in marching band there other day, Dr. Hayward said something about the 1st down thing. She said they were not suppose to print those cards up yet or something because we are not doing the Ay-Zig with changed lyrics. She asked us in band the other day what would be a good first down cheer since they wanted us to can 1st and 10. So since it did get printed I don't know if she is going to do it or not??? I guess we will see.

The band wants to play it
AND
The students want to sing it.
If that is the case then I'm all for it.
My thought is that you don't make tradition by forcing tradition. Most people don't like to be told what to do but they will participate if they are encouraged. That is why the cheerleaders, band, SicSic and other students groups form and participate in game day activities.
The traditions that I remember that were not scripted but lead by various groups without cards, message boards or any real push by the ath. dept are:
Cheerleaders chanting BG - SU (and often started by fans)
The band playing a little Gary Glitter at AA (best response they got from crowd) with a lot of "HEY" going onand Beer Barrel Polka creating some dancing on the sidelines.
The students at the hockey games ignoring intro of the other team, counting goals and calling the opposing goalie a sieve, insert team "back at full strength" with the response "That's debatable" and several others.
PA at football got the crowd to say "Falcon First Dowwwn!"
I think these things are great when they are done but I really doubt a card sent to every student on campus is going to make this happen. The band, cheerleaders, SicSic and groups of students that form groups like the Anderson Animals will create and maintain these traditions.
The athletic department should pass the traditions and new ideas to the appropriate groups and see what they can do with them and see what happens. I hope I don't see some Freshman checking a card during the game to see what should happen next.

Journey, Have you forgotten that WE'VE done a BG SU thing for years and years...this just sounds like a slight modification...i.e. from side to side...to the 4 corners deal...not bad...if it works. It's the Journey... wrote: The touchdown thing also seems a little Ohio Stateish (O..H..I..O.. around the shoe) or Penn Stateish ("We Are...Penn State...") I remember them putting it up on the video board, but getting very little crowd response. Of all the "New" traditions that one is a whatever in my book. But those were just my first thoughts.

Honestly, I am a bit shocked that they would try to get students to sing the WRONG WORDS to AZZ...that is freaking rediculous...I honestly love the Falcon screech as they've been using it for the past three seasons, granted it didn't get used much after Omar left...what about adding something like "Chant B-G-S-U while a kickoff is in the air" where's stuff like that? I did like the "First and 10, Do it Again" and I think they students and fans should just do it anyways...someone made the point that people will actually have to be in the stands for this stuff to work and, unfortunately, that means a LOT of this stuff probably won't catch on anyways...but yo, Go Falcon Football...I hope they prove a lot of people wrong...that's what is most important, the team on the field.

first and ten do it again must stay. When the hell will snake man be able to bellow out his "ooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo"? That's the highlight of my fan experience. Guess he'll just have to stick to demanding that we score exactly 69 points every game.
NEVER EVER CHANGE WORDS TO AY ZIG.
also a lot of these chants and talons and whatnot seem tacky. Cheering real loud seems to work out well. Why couldn't we just stick to that?
Also aren't traditions things that have occured for years and not suddenly being implemented..?

If someone throws a party and no one comes is it really a party?
If someone makes a traditions card and no one does them, what does it matter?
But if someone throws a party and everyone comes and people get wasted and have a good time. Then good.
If the traditions become traditions in something more than name..than great. If not this thread is much adu about nothing.
All of those traditions that have been stated as being liked by people here from hockey or football games all had to start somewhere. If it happens with a random group of people saying "hey lets try this", or its the administration saying "hey lets try this", I really dont see a big difference between the two.
People are either going to do the chants or they aren't. They will either catch on or they won't. We might as well spice up the game and try to make it as engaging and entertaining as possible.
Maybe a big group of fans will start doing some chant that, is not tacky, that is just a deviation from what the administration has proposed.
maybe everyone will buy a falcon talon foam hand.
Who knows? Everything has to start somewhere.
I commend them for just trying.
One thing that I would like to note is wouldn't it make sense to play some songs from the BeeGees? Like maybe staying alive after we get a first down on third down? Night Fever during a Night game? You make me feel like dancing during timeouts, or when Willi Geter, Freddie Barnes or eric Ransom makes a particularly acrobatic td?
