EDIT: found it.....channel 440
Bill,
Thanks for the update, because I didn't see anything about the BG game either.... I've had DISH for over a year now...and it's MUCH better than my cable ever was. To be able to see the Falcons this weekend makes it that much better!

That's it. The Big Ten network wants $1.12 per subscriber per month within the conference footprint, which is a ton of money.

A birdie tells me Time Warner got ESPN-U for about 12 cents per subscriber per month.

Is the Big Ten network really worth 900 percent more than ESPN-U?
To the Big Ten footprint of their market I would say it's undoubtedly 900% more valuable than ESPN-U. All of those UM, OSU, MSU, etc fans that can no longer watch their team on basic cable are going to switch providers. I think this season we didn't see it because most people just assumed the cable company would eventually pick it up. They haven't and I'm betting that in the next year Time Warner loses a huge chunk of sports fan viewers who want BTN.

Personally I wish we could get a la carte programming, but in the end I don't think my (or many of us on this website) would see their bills go down much. It's my understanding that these sports channels (specifically ESPN & ESPN2, etc) are by quite a large margin the most expensive channels that your cable company pays for. Right now the little old ladies who just watch game show channel are helping subsidize our viewing of ESPN. I think I saw somewhere that ESPN alone was $3/month for each person who gets the channel. If you moved to a la carte type pricing you can bet that would be at least $5, probably more. And that's just one channel.

I don't deny that a la carte pricing would be great for a lot of people, but I think most of us sports fans that want all the various ESPN, Fox sports, etc, would end up paying just as much if not more than we do now.
I work for Time Warner Cable and you are right about prices going up. Another reality of ala carte programming is that many channels would not be able to survive. Niche channels that have only one program you like to watch would disappear, thus limiting the variety of programming that is available.

As for the BTN, one aspect that some do not see is that if you live outside of the Big 10 footprint, such as in WV, you are only going to pay .10 for the channel. Yes, you are penalized for being a cable customer in Ohio. Cable companies negotiate prices for their entire company, not region by region.

The Big 10 network looks to make about 237 millions dollars this year off the network. That's doesn't include what they would make if TWC added it. Now, let's talk about disparity in college sports.

That is why I was wondering if having the multi-sports pack might open us up to more games.

Check the overflow channels. As was stated before, BG-MSU is listed as being on Channel 440 on DISH.

I work for a cable company as my second job (Bryan Municipal Cable in Bryan) and we paid $4 per subscriber last year for ESPN. ESPN 1 - not the Deuce, not Classic, not News, not U. $4 for ESPN. Then you add all the other ESPN networks, Fox Sports Ohio, Fox Sports Detroit, SportsTime Ohio, etc. and it is a lot of money for sports programming.

HSN and the other shopping channels are free or low cost for cable companies. In fact, they get a cut (albeit small) of purchases. That's why they stay.

I used to complain about high prices of cable, but not since I've been on the other side. It's the networks, not the cable companies that are pushing this. Heck, Disney/ABC recently tried to get us to pay $1.50 per subscriber for Channel 13 in Toledo. We said f*ck you... we have the Ft. Wayne station here for free. Guess what they said to us? "Uh... OK... forget about it."

Is this such a really BiG deal?

Post by Class of 61 »

Like most everyone else, I'm looking forward to seeing the Falcons on my DISH TV setup...but, on an "overall" basis, is this such a great deal? We'll (at least some of us) have been able to see TWO BG games that we probably wouldn't have seen before...but after this week, I , for one, don't really care. Bet the OSU-Mich game will be on ABC (Ch.5 in Cleve.) as it has for years...doubt that the B-10 would hold back the amount of exposure that game gives the 2 schools and the conference. So, in essence, after this week I don't really care if DISH carries it or not...Of course, if I gave a damn about OSwho, I would be happy....but I don't give a damn about OSwho - Or the whole state of Michigan. (Sorry Dave)

Programming costs are the biggest expense for cable companies. Not equipment, fiber, insurance, vehicles or employee pay. Everytime you see A-Rod, Peyton Manning or Kobe signing a contract for a bajillioin dollars or a team being sold for a gazillion dollars, you are just about guaranteed that cable companies are going to get stuck paying for it, thusly, the customers.

Saw that in the Akron BJ today. I checked our dish lineup and I see BG/MSU on Ch 440. So I popped in a tape and hopefully the game will be on. If not, I'm sure you can catch it later in the week. The BTN needs to fill space.

One week too late for the MN game. GO BG!~

I think I saw it will be replayed at least twice next week, including Sunday morning at like 1 AM.

Well, there was no overflow channel for me so the game didn't tape at noon. So I'm sitting there watching some late games and flip on the BTN at 12:30 am....look at the guide and lo and behold at 1 am is the BG/MSU replay. By 2 am, I was so tired from driving all evening I stopped zapping commercials and let the tape run..woke up at 5 am and had my tape. Cool beans. I was just watching it again about an hour ago.

Well, here in NE Kansas, we had 4 or 5 games going on the BTN Saturday at 11 (Central). It was channels 439-443 I think. As far as anything else I'll watch on there, who knows. However, I don't think we're paying much extra for it, and I got to watch the MSU game.
