Conservative play calling dooms Falcons in 2nd half

Post by aaronBG10 »

It's hard to feel disappointed about the way the Falcons played today against a good Michigan St. team but I feel that there were just some things that could have been handled differently by coach Brandon, things that really leave a bad taste in my mouth about this game today.

In my opinion the turning point in the ball game was at the start of the 4th I believe it was, when we had it 4th and short on their 43 and we punted it away. At that point the offense was moving the ball and the defense was struggling to make any stops against and overpowering Michigan st. O. At that point your best defense is your offense! Go for it and get some momentum and keep the ball moving. When he punted, he put a tired defense back on the field which subsequently affected the Falcons chance of making anything happen for the rest of the game.

Again, i wouldn't say that I'm disappointed with the way that they played today, I guess I just feel that they were good enough to come home with a big victory which just didn't happen.

edit: And one more thing.... why did we mail it in at the end of the ball game? Damnit, you play hard until the final whistle is blown and it really bothers me that we didn't take some shots down the field. Sure it may have all been in vain but why not? What do you possibly have to lose? Go out there and get some work done for your later opponents. To my knowledge we only took 1-2 deep shots in the entire ball game. Last game the big play was the trick play that got the momentum going for the ballgame, today there was little to none of that.

Oh well, all and all I'm happy with the way they played today....any update on lichtensteiger?[/i]

We didn't block anybody. It had nothing to do with the play calling.
4th & 13 on PU 32yd line.. 56,000 fans up on their feet screaming, i held my breath the entire play trying to make as little noise as possible.. wouldnt u know Sharon would make the biggest touchdown catch in the history of BG Football, FALCON UP!

The running game must be improved because the offense is becoming very predictable, and that will lead to more interceptions.

play calling is not why we lost.

the turnovers let to pts.

O an D line got tired.

missing some key people didnt help.

We certainly could have used a few down field passes in the 2nd half but the blocking needed to be there in order to accomplish this. I believe they were trying to go long but Sheehan got flushed, chased and tackled before it opened up.
I proudly chose to be a Falcon and a Falcon I will remain until the end.

Are you saying that Sheehan's fumble, pick's, and bad line play cost them the game?

We lost because MSU is a better team. We didn't run the ball because we couldn't run the ball. We missed some opportunities and so did they. MSU isn't the greatest team in the world, but we aren't supposed to be either.

We should be able to compete in the MAC. If we lose and by how much to BC at this stage is hardly relevant.

Are you saying that losing is fine. I don't care who the opponent is I want to see a win. The more quality wins we get we go up in the rankings, it's not the other way around.

So if we had lost to USC or the Colts today you would still be upset?

I won't say losing is fine to me, but I can't get upset when my team loses to someone better. If I got mad every single time my team lost no matter the circumstances, then I would have blown my head off 20 years ago.

Hey zeke, I don't like losing at all either no matter the opponent , but we can't worry about rankings at this stage. Yeah, I wanna see us back in them soon, but one thing at a time. Lets get better , healthier and those things will take care of themselves. I see no reason why we can't win a Mac Champiohship this year if we stay healthy and the players continue to get better every week.

I'm with zeke. After the first half it was proven that we could play with this team. Then we couldn't get it done in the second half. It's disappointing, but there is still nothing to be ashamed of in losing either.

We needed to run the ball. Was Bullock hurt? Suspended? Sleep with Brandon's wife?

I don't like Geter or Ransom as a pure RB, we need Bullock if we're actually going to run it. Those other guys are great in the slot, but just cannot get it done on the ground. We badly needed a rushing attack in this game as well. They basically dropped everyone back in coverage all 2nd half and there were probably very few open WRs to be found. Worse yet they still managed a LOT of pressure during that time period just rushing 4.

Our offensive line is good by MAC standards - and experienced. By big ten standards we are average. We also were 20 lbs lighter per man than MS on the O-line. The Oregon Ducks O-line averages 315 just like state. These days that is a factor - just reality. Last year we had a 340 lb guard pushing the pile. I was wondering before the season why everyone was so high on them. They are not huge by any means. Brandon is doing a good job using what he has. We just got beat and we were a bit outmanned with some key injuries. Play calling was good. We would not have been more effective running more against that defense. When we did we got little - especially in the second half.

guys weren't we 4-8 last year? splitting with 2 Big 10 teams is something to build on...no we need to get ready for the MAC schedule and WKU, who apparently can score some points against NAIA competition...

BG is 3-5 against the Big 10 since 2003. Is that the best record against the Big 10 in the MAC?
