By far. The rest of the league combined has 2 wins vs. the Big 10.
Although I don't know when they started cutting things off at 2003. We're 4-5 since 2001. Also, the AP wire story says something about our 2 wins vs. B10 teams in '03, saying we "upset" Northwestern in the MCB. I don't know how much of an upset that really was. I felt like we were the better team the whole time. (except for maybe parts of the second quarter)

We actually played way below expectations in that game. I think we were 14-17 point favorites.
Didn't they end up 6-7 after the bowl loss that year? I know for a fact we were favored, definitely not an upset.

Yeah, they did. One of the lowpoints of our recent record vs. the Big Ten. Since '01, how the B10 teams we've played have finished:
'01 Northwestern W 4-7
'03 Purdue W 9-4
'03 OSU L 11-2
'03 Northwestern W 6-7
'05 Wisconsin L 10-3
'06 Wisconsin L 12-1
'06 OSU L 12-1
'07 Minnesota W 1-1 so far
'07 Michigan State L 2-0 so far

An effort that at least doesn't look bad scrolling across the bottom of the tv. However, we once again failed in the second half. When was the last time we outplayed an opponent after halftime? We go in with a gameplan for the entire game and cannot make any adjustments like the other teams do against us. It is disappointing week after week to lose the second half.
BGSU was a 7 point fave in the 2003 Motor City Bowl...Scooter confirmed that for me an hour ago. Actually, it was Phil Steele's preview that confirmed that. And NW came to play that day as they felt they were getting dissed by the media for even being there.

I wouldn't say the playcalling was conservative, I'd say we couldn't react and adjust to the changes that MSU made, and that happens because we didn't have the depth and somewhat personnel to man up to those changes. It's why they're a Big 10 team, they have the depth to compete with the same schools in their conference.
I think it'll be easier to judge how we adjust this year once we start playing teams with similar talent levels. I have to think that if we can establish a strong running game, these adjustments will be easier to make than last year.
The play calling in the second half was predictable and I will assume as time goes on and more film comes avail from this season to our opponents we will see this effect prehalftime.
things i noticed from game 1 and 2. TS is a good QB, he is DEVELOPING, ( I have every confidence in him and his development right now) he has some issue with telegraphing his passes and going through his progressions but that will come. He is not ever going to be the runner like Josh, that dimension of our O is hurting, the Run is suffering right now, i would hope we could open up the run some more with the pass as we have done in the past, but in order for that to happen we just can not live on the 5-8 yard passes. while I love those passes and possession receiver because they more chains so well, we some serious variation and some more deep strike capability to open up the run.
YES we need halftime adjustments...but more so, this O is best when its running fast, 2 min drill fast. why we pull the plug on the tempo is not understandable.
We have a powerfull O line, i must say I wonder why we could not open up with the spread, get our points then just go Pittsburgh and run the I and other run based formations grind it out the second half off tackle and center, that line can do it! that adjustment would throw off the other team
I think a lot of the criticisms about the coaches going conservative in the second half is coming primarily from people who weren't at the game. Now, I'm not trying to discredit anyone by pointing this out, but the fact of the matter is that you can never see the entire field through a TV camera. As I said in another thread, we tried to throw the ball and keep the offense wide open in the second half, but MSU made some excellent half-time adjustments. All of the sacks and the inability to complete passes in the second half were due largely to the Spartans playing lock-down man coverage in the secondary. And when I say "lock-down," I mean it. The difference was absolutely night-and-day between the halves in terms of recievers being open.
I've been thinking some about why MSU was able to make such a stunning adjustument in fifteen minutes of conversation, and it dawned on me that one big difference for us in the second half was not having Ransom on the field. It seemed to me in the first half that he was faster than MSU's secondary and linebackers, and in the first half MSU was employing mostly zone coverage. I'm wondering if losing a guy that fast would make a difference in the type of secondary coverage that they would use? I would think that having a guy in the slot who can run past the defense would cause defenders to back up in the middle of the field and play softer coverage against all of our other wide outs. I could be wrong there, but the difference in coverage was stunning between the two halves, and there has to be a reason for that. Our wide receivers didn't suddenly go stupid in the lockeroom.

I half agree with you BO. We did keep the offense wide-open, but we definitely were not creative with our passes. We kept calling the same plays and the same formations. That was evident by MSU's below average secondary's ability to jump our routes and swarm so easily.
Brandon wasn't going to open the playbook wide open with conference play still yet to start.
actually the perspective from TV is ideal as you have no distractions, and endless replay.
Routs were jumped due to TS's inexperience youll see it if watch the game on tv

That could very well be, too. I did notice that Tyler made a couple of mental errors throughout the game, but you're going to see that with any young quarterback adjusting to a new level of play. I am still completely enamored with his ability to read routes on a consistent basis. You can't teach those kinds of instincts.
I'm tellin' ya though, it was stunning to be sitting in the endzone in the second half scanning the field after the snap and seeing not one white jersey without something green right on top of it. I'm not given to admit the talent gap between the Big 10 and the MAC, and offensively I don't think it is really all that wide. Defensively, though, it is a huge gap in terms of size and speed. The more I think about it, I really think Eric Ransom getting hurt allowed the MSU secondary to take full advantage of their speed.

Sheehan barely had time to get the ball out of there throwing underneath...waiting that extra tick to get the deep stuff open would have resulted in a deceased QB.
Maybe they could have a run a draw here and there or a shovel pass inside...but I don't know how much difference that would have made. MSU is just plain fast and aggressive on defense.
They're going to make a lot of noise in the Big 10
It's not the fall that hurts...it's when you hit the ground.
I didn't think the play-calling was conservative at all in the second half. It was identical to the first half play-calling. MSU made adjustments and our OL play broke down. Even though we didn't make any halftime adjustments, I'm not sure they would have done any good. MSU's DL was on a mission, and I think our guys were tired from consecutive B11 lines leaning on 'em.
Good points made all around. That MSU D was fast and strong. Sparty will be a playa in the Big Ten. We won't see a D like that anywhere in the MAC.
BG battled to the end...no matter what the Falcons kept playing hard. When a team continues to battle despite the odds against them, good things will happen.
I am confident this team will contend for the MAC title. We have a lot of work to do but the stage has been set. As long as we keep getting better each week, by the end of the year....LOOK OUT.

The Freak is dead on with that post.. and the best part of all of this is our age (which has been addressed in other posts)... of course we'll have to fill in some major holes in the Oline come next year.. but still.. the future of BG football is bright.
