I love Joe Pa but that statement ticked me off.

No question there are hurdles Mid-majors have...But we can't even sell-out the 5 games we do have at home (in a 30,000 capacity stadium), let alone 7, AND TICKETS ARE FREE for the entire student body! If we were selling out every home game and the Doyt was as electric as I experienced when GameDay was here, every weekend, then we have the right to complain about respect, and Mid-majors being over looked. So how do you get there? You win. You win, and win, and win. Every season BG needs to be expected to have a winning season. I am hoping last year was an anomaly. But you want butts in the seats? You want respect? You want people to quit wearing OSU and Michigan garb on campus? You want esprit de corps? You win.
Like George C. Scott as Patton said, "Americans love a winner and will not tolerate a loser."[/quote]
This is a chicken egg situation. How do you get more home games? You win? How do you win more? Get more home games. We are much more likely to upset one of the big boys in BG

Imagine every DI-A scheduling 6 home annd 6 away - talk about the MAC having scheduling nightmares. 117 divided by 2, Hawaii guests get 13 games and some conferences have an odd number of members.
Build a winner and they will come but don't think for a minute we will sell out just because it is a winner. The promotions must continue, fans must recruit fans, and the coaches, players and boosters must be active in the BG community and beyond Wood County. As I believe Red Green says "We're all in this togther."

Taking home dates away form BCS uber programs like OSSU and Michigan would hurt mid major programs, not help them. It would deprive them of a source of revenue that they would not be able to make up by hosting another home game.
If a school wants to bite ths bullet and sacrifice a home game for some $$$, the NCAA has no business getting involved in that decision.

enough of the mid major crap....either all D1a is D1a or we need to get off the monopoly ship and start the a real NATional chaMPIonshiP conference with the majority of the excluded D1a conferences
polls voting and in general a total manipulation of the sport by the largest programs is not ok.
want to fill our stadium then we deserve as a conference a fair and equal shot at all other conference champions, and to those from "powerhouse" conferences, that dont go...to bad.
the BCS and bowl deal is just wrong, and the more it is supported the more wrong it becomes...and some how odly justified...much like racism in the south, was viewed as ok by those in the time, no its exactly that, down right rotten discrimination.

Here's another question that may have been answered...why can we get Minnesota to do a home and home but not MSU? I mean, MSU at this point in time is in the bottom rung of the Big 10, so why did we not make them agree to come to the Doyt as well??? I'm not too bummed about losing home dates with Boise...yeah, it would have been cool to see Ian Johnson here but ya know what? After winning a BCS bowl, they are going to stay competitive and "cinderella-ish" for the next 5 or so years I bet. I think the main concern should be getting home and homes, not just getting a paycheck...granted, there is no way OSU is going to play in the Doyt, which sucks, but hey, as has been stated previously, life's not fair.

Indiana's been playing at MAC schools for the past few years, including WMU, CMU and I belive Ball State. I don't know how much of that was Hoeppner's influence (though I think some of them were scheduled even before he got there), but they're another B10 school that we could focus on getting to DLP, as well. I think we've scared Northwestern away for awhile, and probably Purdue, too.
As far as getting more home games, I think we should look at what UT has done to make that happen (and that's about the ONLY lesson we should take from UT...
), rather than worrying why the big boys are landing 7 or 8 home games.

Yeah...we're all division 1A,...when I was in college and waiting tables at Bill Knapp's I was a waiter just like a guy working at Bookbinder's in Philadelphia. Should I have expected to get tipped the same for serving ham croquettes as a guy serving hideously overpriced lobsters?
Jessica alba and Britney Spears are both women...do I really need to go there?

I thought I read either Gregg Brandon or Greg Christopher say -- or hint -- that this series was actually a three-for-one or something like that, in which other MAC schools have or are picking up the other games.VDub26Falcon wrote:Here's another question that may have been answered...why can we get Minnesota to do a home and home but not MSU?
I can't seem to lay my hands on that quote. But I do remember seeing something like that.
Maybe this would be a good question for "Ask the AD."
One likely factor: They put more butts in seats than Minnesota.I mean, MSU at this point in time is in the bottom rung of the Big 10, so why did we not make them agree to come to the Doyt as well???

While I agree with MACMAN philosophically, all D-Ia's are not created equally, for example, endowments:Flipper wrote:Money talks and bullshit walks...MACMAN wrote:enough of the mid major crap....either all D1a is D1a or we need to get off the monopoly ship and start the a real NATional chaMPIonshiP conference with the majority of the excluded D1a conferences

UM: $5.6 billion
OSU: $2.0 billion
Minn: $2.0 billion
Northwestern: $5.9 billion
UT: $173 million
MU: $320 million
OU: $208 million
BG: $70.2 million
Now I realize endowments are not correlation with athletics (if they were, Harvard would be the undisputed National Champs for the last century). However, there are differences. My whole point is that if we want to get better, more respect, etc. we have to do the very best with what we've got. The Doyt needs to have 30k at every game. As stated, the student body gets in for free, so imagine how game-day would be different if half the student body showed up at games...But like I said before, to get butts in the seats, you need to win and win consistently. Coming off of going 1-1 against the Big Ten, there's no reason that there shouldn't be 20-25k people at the Doyt next weekend (as in 9/22 ya smart aleks).
I think we often like to blame others for not giving us (insert your favorite colloquialism). But we start filling the Doyt, continue having winning seasons year after year, where a losing season is the outlier, and everything else will come. Recruits will come, which means an increased number of talented athletes, people want to be associated with a winning school, which will help increase applications, which increases our ability to be a more selective institution, and so on and so on.
I realize this is a rather simplified, narrowly focused, logical progression. However, I think you all understand my point that BG needs to worry about BG first. And once we build a MAC powerhouse, then we can start to worry about rankings, BCS bowls, and whatnot. Am I wrong?
