Lianna Jennings will not play at BGSU...

Post by Falconfreak90 »

There is a small article in today's ABJ stating Lianna Jennings of Stow will not attend BGSU. Her coach, Bob Podges, made the announcement yesterday. "She's looking to go to another school and play basketball. At this point, she is evaluating her options".

I wonder what's changed? There was no specific reason why she's looking elsewhere but I wish her the best.

Was she enrolled in classes?

Post by Class of 61 »

Mike,
Thanks for the link...wonder if she actually had been attending classes at BG this year... and would that mean she'd have to "sit out" a year as a transfer student? I know the article is very brief, but it'd be interesting to know what the heck happened... was looking forward to this incoming group of frosh, including Jennings, to carry on the winning ways. And it would seem as a guard, she'd have gotten significant P.T. with Kate being a senior and the need to start filling in.

A search on BGSU.edu shows that she was apparently taking classes - assuming that having a BGSU email address means that you're officially enrolled, I don't know what constitutes "taking classes" to the NCAA.

If she *does* have to sit a year anyway, I don't know how it makes much sense not to give this year a shot, but I'll give her credit for knowing what's going on in her head and heart (or other situations) and not stringing the coaching staff and team along if she realized BG wasn't going to work for her.

We still have a helluva freshman class, and maybe some day we can show Liana what she missed out on! (7-peat, anyone? )

Homesick?

Post by Fan4Fun »

I understand that Jennings attended summer school and the first two weeks of fall semester. However, she spent a great deal of time calling home and went home to Stow nearly every weekend. This may just be a case of a homesick kid.

Oh great, where have we heard this before. Scott Vandemeer anyone? BG is like 2 hrs or so from the Stow are , and she's homesick? I guess she must be lookin' at a Cleveland St. or a CC so she can be 10 or 15 mins from the parents. I understanding wanting to be close to family and all but you can barely get any better to have only a 2 1/2 hr drive from the family while playing at a Div.1 college. Me thinks this could spell other issues we may not want anyway.

Well, we're only down to 7 freshman now. Liana leaving won't kill us but it still disturbing nonetheless. I hope she finds finds success wherever, but damn its crying shame to lose a such a talented combo guard.

I can't say I'm shocked, but dude - chill out.

She's one member of a STACKED freshman class. She's a human, just like anyone else, and deserves some sympathy. Some people get home sick. Some people just aren't built to deal with living away from their families. Furthermore, who knows whether or not there was a tragic event in her family or something of that nature?

Not to mention... do we even know the actual reason? We have speculation, but no fact. We don't know the truth and don't need to be judging her.

Honestly, I don't need to know why. She left for her own reasons. I wish her luck, but the focus should be on who is here, not who isn't.

I believe Larry Bird left IU as a homesick freshman. He did pretty well with all those problems playing for Indiana State and the Celtics.

Having a BG email address only definitively means that the University accepted you, not necessarily that you attended. As far as I know, I still have an Eastern Michigan email address, despite the fact that I made it clear to them that I wasn't going there after I didn't get the full ride I was hoping for.

As far as "taking classes", many student athletes I've known at various schools take 12 hours, which is the minimum to be considered a full-time student.
Finally a senior!

Have you ever looked at a map? Stow is suburban Akron. She's minutes from both UA and KSU.

I work at a couple front desks of the residence halls and it is amazing to see how many poeple move out just after a week or two because of being homesick.
