Well, the last time the BG-Toledo game was held on the Friday after Thanksgiving at Doyt L. Perry Stadium the attendance was 26,483.

Only 26,483?

See? If they would have held it on the Tuesday BEFORE Thanksgiving, then they could have sold out with 30,000 people there.

I think those worrying about the conflict between the homecoming game and the concert are worrying about a very small number of people that will experience a conflict.

Those concerned over attendance at the TU game on the Friday after Thanksgiving - you're going to complain about something so you might as well continue to beat this dead horse.

I take it that was the 2003 game?

THE SKY IS FALLING! THE SKY IS FALLING!

Seriously, it's not that huge of a problem. Seems like everyone wants something to complain about. If this team is anywhere as successful as it looks like it will be, we won't have to worry too much by the time of the TU game.

People complained about the date the last year or two because "omg the students will totally already be going home" and now they're complaining more. Any other day and they'd be bitching about how other schools TV coverage/schedules would mess up attendance. I doubt there could be found any sort of date which would please the whiners.

Show up, bring friends, and leave it at that.

Maybe the university and the athletic department were on completely different frequencies. It's not hard to make a football game and a concert happen on the same day, AT DIFFERENT TIMES!!! It's not like the WKU game will be on tv or anything like that. Even if it was on BCSN or some s**t like that, the University could easily tell them of a time change and nothing would happen.

And whoever mentioned the Toledo time/date screwup, I agree 100%. That's going to be a DISASTER. First the date is atrocious. If the game had taken place during school time, you would have had 7000 or 8000+ students there. Now you'll be lucky to get 1,000. Unless the townies can make up the difference (yeah right, dream on) you're going to have much lower attendance than you would have had otherwise. Also, since the game is on Black Friday, I imagine the townie attendance will be down due to everybody being out shopping. Either that, or there will be a lot of fights between Bowling Green's married couples over Thanksgiving turkey this year as the guys desire to go to the game while the women complain about it.

I don't understand why they just didn't make the game for Tuesday, like they have in the past. That worked great because the Tuesday before Thanksgiving is the last day of classes before Thanksgiving recess. Having the 2005 game on a Tuesday didn't seem to affect townie attendance much either, it was pretty damn near sold out.

No, the 26,483 figure was the 2001 game, held on a Friday night after Thanksgiving. It was the eighth biggest crowd in the history of the stadium.

The '03 game drew 29,724 on the Saturday afternoon following Thanksgiving.

The '05 game, on the Tuesday before Thanksgiving, drew 17,438 -- which, relatively speaking, was a disgraceful turnout for Toledo.

In my view, the department is doing the right thing. Games on the Friday and Saturday following Thanksgiving have been very successful.

You're right they wouldn't. Because students will have made their minds up well before both events take place. Either you're going to the game or the concert, nobody in their right mind would attempt to go to part of both.

This ultimately falls on the university and the athletic department for once again screwing up scheduling times.

Seems to me that this game has been played AFTER Thanksgiving a few times, one fairly recently...and students WERE there...perhaps not as many as "normal", but they WERE there.

I'll also point out that the '03 game that was played the Saturday after Thanksgiving was moved to that Saturday to earn an ESPN national spot. I believe the game was originally scheduled for the Friday afternoon, but was moved to the Saturday less than 10 days out.

The 2001 Toledo game was probably the largest student attendance I can remember outside of perhaps the NIU game in '03. The stands were packed for that game and it was an absolute party.

Tuesday night games suck period, whether it's the Tuesday before Thanksgiving or any other Tuesday they're terrible for everyone except students.

The Friday after Thanksgiving is absolutely the best time for the game. Almost everybody is off (except those that work retail). The students are not in the dorms, but most of our students live within easy driving distance of campus anyhow. As the attendance numbers show having the game immediately following Thanksgiving has resulted in HUGE attendance numbers, both students and otherwise. The students have proven that they WILL come back for the game, and townie attendance will be much better on a day where everyone is off work.

I am coming back from Columbus because I have off that Friday, my dad from Clyde will be there, Brother in law (UT Grad) from Toledo will be there, Best Friend from Elyria will be there, and brother from St. Louis, Brother in Law from Chicago and Brother in laws brother in Law from DC may all be there as well. For those who went to school close to home but went elsewhere for their careers this is a perfect game. Guys dont want to go shopping anyway and girls generally dont want to go to the games.

What this means for the attendance overall I don't know. I would think that student attendance would be down, but a Friday afternoon game is good for anyone home from work for that day and home for the weekend. Thursday and Saturday are generally the family times, Friday from 1-7 pm may be the perfect time to sneek away from the fam for awhile.

I officially declare myself proven wrong on this topic. Friday is better. The statistics back it up.

That being said, I'll be skeptical of a 25K+ turnout until the day comes. Our lack of quality opponent might be a factor.

Believe me , many students will attend the Homecoming football game at 6 PM and show for Third Eye Blind at 9:30. This will work though it is tight. I spoke to several students planning this double header today.

It is possible to do both with those starts. Plus since I am introducing Third Eye Blind, I expect to bring them on about 9:55 to help get the FB celebrants in the house.

OK so I am not actually introing them. I do have a ticket for the show though.

And I will be at both.

Yes, I will be late for the concert if need be- but I don't expect OT w/the Hilltoppers.

Posters blaming anybody but the MAC office/ESPN for Friday games etc etc are off base. Those pointing out that our AD (all MAC AD's) only partly control this matter are on base. Believe me, our leadership wants/needs more control of FB scheduling. Tough spot right now. I hope things swing back to the AD's.

Go Falcons!

I'm all for later games. It gives those coming into town time to check out downtown, reunite with their various groups, and more time for tailgating of course.

It also puts us under the lights, which is a simply amazing experience when you got a full house.
