The Charlie Weis Debate

Post by duckunder53 »

I just wanted to get a feeling for what others thought about what is being brought up about Charlie Weis's past. He has recently admitted to not playing college football while a student at Notre Dame. He said that he sat in the stands with all of the other "normal" students, always critiqueing what he saw. He is now a coach at a HUGE college football power. A lot of times, administrators will not hire coaches if they do not have playing experience at that level. My poll asks if you feel it is necessary to have playing experience at the college level to be a college coach.

My opinion is NO. I played in high school and coached at a high school, and I firmly believe that I could do a decent job. Obviously, as an assistant and working my way up first. There are a lot of people that I know that are in the same situation.

Don't just vote, give a reason as well!

If that's the case then about 25% of all coaches should have never coached. If you know the game well enough, experience or not, then you should be suitable for coaching. At what level is the varying point.

On a related subject, Notre Dame is changing the name of "Touchdown Jesus" to "First Down Jesus".

Hey Hamms! No, I'm not currently coaching this year. I took an internship with the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) in Orlando, FL. My internship finished after two-a-days were over, and I told them I didn't feel comfortable coming in at the last minute. Plus, I don't know when (or if) I'll get that job to move away for. Coming in late and leaving early wouldn't be a good thing. I expected to have a full-time job already, but that hasn't happened.

The reason I brought this up is because the Petros guy on FSN just can't stop saying it. He thinks Weis is a piece of crap just because he didn't play, and I think it is ridiculous. I e-mailed FSN at his attention and told him how I feel. You all are welcome to do the same, lol.

Nice.

"2nd and less than 15 Jesus" can't be too far behind.

Positive rushing yards Jesus?

In any event, the premise is obviously retarded. Of course you don't have to have played the game to be able to coach it at a high level. I think it probably helps, but it's far from necessary.

Actually when he was first hired at ND this came out. Does this person also think the NFL coaches had to play NFL football? There are numerous head coaches in the NFL, that never played in the league.

His statement is moronic. What a douche.

Brandon played collegiately as both a defensive back and wide receiver at Mesa State (1974) and Northern Colorado (1975-77).
