Temple Game Thoughts
Quick thoughts from my first in-person BG experience of 07.
1) We seem to be continuing our opportunistic defense and special teams. 2 fumble recoveries for touchdowns - that was nice.
2) Tyler is still completing over 60% of his passes, which is also excellent to see.
3) We all know about the playmaking of Corey Partridge and Freddie Barnes, but I really liked what I saw with Marques Parks today. A nice long reception and he WENT UP and got that onside kick attempt by Temple. He continues to impress this season.
4) RE: Special Teams - Kick coverage seemed pretty good to me, though I would like to see more on the returns. Sinisia was also kicking shorter and to the sides later in the game, which troubled me.
5) I would still like to see more from the running game. Tyler almost eclipsed the 50 attempt mark again, and I'd like to see us have something else for defenses to really worry about before we wear the guy's arm out.
6) I was REALLY happy to see the defense clamp down in the second half. We allowed those 2 scores in garbage time, but it didn't matter. They came out in that second half determined to pull away, which was great to see after the Minnesota near-debacle.
Anyone else?

Finally a senior!
Re: Temple Game Thoughts
I'm with you on this one. We have a really good passing game, but we need a solid running game to go along with it. I was hoping that we would come out and run it down Temple's throats. After all, we were playing Temple! That obviously did not happen, but we won the game handily anyways. Hopefully, we can get the line and backs in sync over the next couple weeks. We will need a running game during the Miami/Kent/OU stretch in mid to late October if we want to win the East.eRichFalcon wrote:5) I would still like to see more from the running game. Overall, I am really impressed with Tyler and the depth at receiver. We have a lot of guys on the outside that can get open and make plays when Tyler looks their way. Special teams were even better today. Williams had a couple good returns and Iovinelli/Vrvilo weres solid.
I was concerned when Temple got the ball first in the second half, but the defense took them right out of the game. Great work by Lewis and the defensive line to get us a comfortable lead in the 3rd quarter.

Offensive Line, Running Game.....
These two things stuck out at me while watching. We almost have no running game to speak of. Our leading rusher was Sheehan who took very timely runs out of the pocket for positive gains. I'm watching the game tape right now as I type this and one of announcers mentioned that Temples run d was pretty porous but from what I could see at the game Temple seemed to have our running game sniffed out real easy.
Two plays that jumped out at me was two delayed hand-offs to Geter , both were snuffed out behind the LOS. Something isn't right here, we should be getting more holes from the spread if the opposing D has to cover 4 wideouts. Late in the 4th qtr as Temples D was probably tiring , we did mount a bit of running game with Bullock and AT with Winny at FB. That was the only time we looked competent in running the ball. We shall see again vs WKU what we can do if anything from the run to complement our passing attack. I believe championship teams always have good running games to go with good passing. I don't know of too many pass oriented teams that did well winning championships with no running game.
I have question as well, what are we going to do with J.Sheidler? A 6'4 245lb' r at TE and he can't play in the slot a bit and give us the tall rangy target we could definitly use amongst all our small quick wr's?
We definitely started slow , on O and D for most of the 1st half. 3rd qtr was actually good for a change as thats when we seemed to dominate enough to get the lead. Overall this game leads alot to be desired in some areas. We'll see how we get better vs WKU next game.

Congrats on a great win. I think Temple held their own and was demorilized with that second half start. Our QB could not get over that strip sack for TD. I think it could have been a great game had Temple not made so many mental mistakes. I hope you guys go on and Win the MAC championship.
Congrats again!
Congrats again!

On a lot of those situations he was stuck in the pocket and would've been called for grounding. The pocket was collapsing around him so quick in that second half.Tricky_Falcon wrote:I kept wondering why your QB never just threw the ball away instead of taking 4-8 yard losses. It looked like he has some talent but he refused to throw the ball away when he was in trouble.

Diyral Briggs really stood out today. Temple simply could not find a way to block him. We did something with him a time or two that I'd like to see more of against the more mobile QB's. On 3rd and longish (6-8 yds), Briggs didn't line up as a traditional DE...they stood him up like a LB...he showed blitz by sneaking into the crease between the DE and the DT, but then he just slid down the line after the snap and spied the QB. That really took away the bootleg.
Another thing I liked to see was the reaction to smith's late hit penalty. They immediately sat him for a few plays...I love to see coaches do that when a kid has that kind of selfish lapse.
Kudos to coach Brandon and his post game comments.. he was asked about last year's game...he started to talk about how different this year's team is from last year's, but he caught himself and limited his comments to this year's team. Glad to see that the past is getting put in the rearview where it belongs.
Going forward...we need to protect the QB a bit better...Sheehan was ducking and chucking it a bit too much today. I really didn't realize the kid is as moibile as he is...and he throws a very nice ball on the run.

It's not the fall that hurts...it's when you hit the ground.
Agreed on all accounts Flip. Briggs was unblockable in the 2nd half. He was in the backfield constantly, and was also getting mugged on nearly every single play. Magnone (whose name I just had to look up, RS-FR) was also in the backfield constantly.Flipper wrote:Diyral Briggs really stood out today. Temple simply could not find a way to block him. I really noticed against MSU how well Sheehan feels the rush and moves around in the pocket, and seems to throw a real good ball on the move. He definitely looks comfortable and ready to play out there. His future is very bright.
Diyral Briggs = Darrell Biggs to Michael Reghi.
With as many opportunities to correctly identify Briggs, Reghi did not get it right once.
I agree with the decision to pull Smith for a couple plays after the penalty, but, in his defense, that was a close call. Smith was diving to make the play and the kid quickly slipped and fell to the turf. It was close, but I would have expected that to go without a flag.

Reghi's a tool. He made more mistakes than I could keep track of today.
My thoughts? All things considered, I was very happy with what I saw. The team showed some resiliency, and Coach Ward deserves a ton of credit for his halftime adjustments. The D was really flying around in that second half. It was great to see us not give up any huge plays when the game was still in doubt.

Roll Along!
We let 'em back in at the end of the first half. I was very happy with the potential adjustments on defense in the second half. I can't recall our intensity level being higher to start a second half. We dominated the third quarter! Still concerned with the run offense. A great day at the Doyt. Weather was perfect and sunburn for all. Attendance was a disappointment, though.
According to Freak, who talked to Coach Ward after the game, the halftime adjustment consisted of him saying, "Do you need a cup of coffee? Wake the hell up!" Or something along those linesJacobs4Heisman wrote:Reghi's a tool. He made more mistakes than I could keep track of today.

Well the streak continues... the Falcons are now 5-0 in games that I've attended. I have a lot of points to make, but I'll save most of that for tomorrow seeing how tired I am & that the Purdue game just now got over.
1. I'm very proud to be a Falcon Season Ticket holder, the parking spot alone was worth it, especially compared to Purdue.
2. The people again were all very nice and easy going.
3. The cheerleaders walked by us when my buddy and I were tossing the football around before the game... my God that made my day!
4. The attendance was not too bad, although I guessed 15k, so to see 16k isn't not low-balling it at all.
5. I loved the idea behind trying to get all the fan chants going, but my God when people don't even make noise on 3rd and 14 in a tie game, forget the other stuff.
6. The Falcon Screech is AWESOME, but too loud and it actually annoyed everyone other than me, so turn it off I guess..
7. Wow we have a very impressive D, 7 striaght 3 and outs, and 2 TD's? Are you kidding me? WOW!
8. Our ST's looked great and have us a huge advantage in the game!
9. Barnes is still my hero, although we have a lot of good looking weapons on O.
10. We are 1-0 in the MAC EAST, and only a few more of those wins away from clinching the Divsion, LETS WIN THE EAST BABY!

4th & 13 on PU 32yd line.. 56,000 fans up on their feet screaming, i held my breath the entire play trying to make as little noise as possible.. wouldnt u know Sharon would make the biggest touchdown catch in the history of BG Football, FALCON UP!
