Toledo receives verbal from top area baseball recruit

Post by duckunder53 »

Elmwood senior outfielder/pitcher Ben Hammer has verballed to the University of Toledo for baseball. Hammer has batted over .500 for the last two years garnering All-Ohio honors while leading his team to a 2007 Division III State Runner-up finish. Not to mention Ben is very bright (4.0 GPA I believe) and a model citizen.

The only reason I am posting this is because it is odd to me that the baseball coaches couldn't do more to get this athlete to play at BGSU. Especially considering the fact that he could go for free as his mother works at BGSU. Besides that, I am happy for Ben and his family and I know he will do very well at UT.

He must like Kenny Rogers.

They need to be concerned about whether the NCAA is going to verbally commit them to the doghouse.

Maybe UT was a better fit for his academic interests.

Maybe the coaches are the reason why he chose UT. However, it is just a verbal & lots can happen in the life of a teenager before signing day. BG has great academics, so never say never!

It did have something to do with academics, as he wants to go into the medical field, so I'm told. BG recruited Ben VERY hard, but sometimes you lose for no obvious reason. It certainly wasn't a case of overlooking him. I think we do a very good job of recruiting "local" kids, as you can see by looking at our roster, but you don't win em all!

Bummer - it's never too late though. Hey, did BG ever hire an assistant coach? Haven't seen anything on the website!
