I missed marching.
Who can be in the Alumni Band at Homecoming?
In regards to the horn-tooting...WOW. and that's all I got.bgmaggot00 wrote:That sounds correct to my aging mind. In addition, I remember you tooting my horn a few times while we lived together. In addition, I remember our phones tooting their respective horns on the way to Oklahoma in '04. Oh yeah, my copies of K1 and K2 are just fine (MUCHAS GRACIAS), but the K3 DVD doesn't work. Thoughts?PresBG wrote:As for the topic of playing to the east stands though....In past years, 2002 specifically comes to mind (and maybe prior? Alums help me out on this one), the FMB did perform to both sides of the stadium. The band would perform song #1 to the home/student side, song #2 to the "away" side, and then finish the show back towards the home side. In addition, the band also used to perform one song to the 'away' side during pregame - that being the now non-existent visitors fight song.
About the K3 dvd....Not really sure on that Jeff, but will see what I can do.

From what I could tell (I was in it, so hard to really see other than during rehearsal), it's really not THAT much different. Yes, the ranks are "mixed" and there's no more visitor's fight song, but other than that the basic structure is the same. Of course I suppose the more you continue to change the little things, the less and less recognizable it will become.

No, I don't mean small tweaks like that. Stuff like that has always been done, it seems. Nothing can stay exactly the same, adjustments have to be made to fit personnel.

then what constitutes a large change? adding in 2 extra Maggots was kind of big, the 5th tenor not so much though, i see thatShakeatailfeather04 wrote:No, I don't mean small tweaks like that. Yeah I think it's kinda odd the FMB quit doing that. I'm sure I'm missing some from this list, but I've been to games at UMich, OSU, Minn, Wisc, MSU, Indiana, Cincy, Miami (OH), Ohio, Akron, Toledo, Ball St, and each and every band played visitor's fight song as part of pre-game. Just seems a little odd to me to cut it ...murph wrote:There's no visitor's fight song any more? That was the second best part of pre-game!

I think she means so that entry is no longer the same drill at all. You know. REALLY changed. Enough so that your average band-illiterate Joe in the crowd will go, "Whoa... that's different." And, no offense, but he's not going to notice two extra Maggots.realmenskip wrote:then what constitutes a large change? adding in 2 extra Maggots was kind of big, the 5th tenor not so much though, i see thatShakeatailfeather04 wrote:No, I don't mean small tweaks like that. As for the visitor's fight song. I'm kind of disappointed, and kind of surprised... but then not that much after all, when I think about it. As you all have pointed out, it did tend to sound like crap.
Besides that... sure, it was fun/funny to sort of make it up on the spot, but the way it usually ended up sounding didn't reflect all that well on the FMB.
Anyway, that's just my guess. Like I said, it's kind of disappointing, but I can understand the thinking.

The reason I was given from the top is such:
The visitor's fight song was instituted back in the day to promote sportsmanship and introduce the two teams on a level playing field. The last few years it had been played, our fans lost sight of the whole good sportsmanship thing and just started booing whenever we played it.
Most schools who still play it have fans that respect the idea of good sportsmanship and clap and cheer along with the band.
We nixed it as it seemed to actually be promoting bad sportsmanship. If we're going to blame anyone for not playing it anymore, I would blame those who did not make an effort to instill the sportsmanship idea into our fanbase.
When I go to away games, one of the things I judge other bands on is how they play our fight song. OSU did a great job with our fight song when we were there last year so I have respect for them. Akron didn't do quite so well, I didn't hear a spot of the counter melody at all, so I didn't appreciate them so much. I am relieved on one hand that we don't play it anymore because I'm sure there are people out there like me who would be very disappointed to hear some of the FMB's renditions of their beloved songs. On the other hand I loved the salute, and I really wish we could have put more time and effort into making sure EVERY part of pregame was performed with the utmost quality. Who knows, maybe it will make a comeback someday and it will be taken much more seriously at that time.

You're assuming they could PLAY the counter melody? The Niz wrote:Akron didn't do quite so well, I didn't hear a spot of the counter melody at all, so I didn't appreciate them so much.
I'm disappointed that the visitor fight song won't be played. We made it a point to play the visitor's fight song better than they themselves played it.
It was tough to do because there are some real stinkers out there.

You are correct ma'am! When I say big changes I mean like if suddenly the maggots enter from the East and West sides and the percs braveheart it onto the field. You know, stuff like that.FliccGirl wrote:I think she means so that entry is no longer the same drill at all. You know. REALLY changed. As far as the visitor's fight song goes, I always thought the point was to play it at a slower tempo than normal while still calling it a "rousing" rendition. At least that's what we always did, and we certainly never took much time to rehearse it. Hell, there were times that we got the music the day of the game.
It was pretty unsportsmanlike, so I can see why it was axed. I would much rather that they just started playing it well and at the correct tempo than see it be eliminated all together. If the fans were being jerks about it, that's a whole other issue.
And DAMNIT now I have the stupid Miami fight song in my head. Thanks a lot!
