I stand corrected. The number is $250,000, regardless of how much time is left on the contract.Globetrotter wrote:I think the buyout number is less (and I think considerably less) then his actual salary. Someone (Maybe Hammb) had this number when this talk started last year. You can find the contracts on line somewhere.Schadenfreude wrote:Also, BGorDeath, do your sources tell you where Greg Christopher was going to come up with $300,000 to buy out Brandon?
USA Today's Web site does have a copy of the contract, here:
http://images.usatoday.com/sports/graph ... een_fb.pdf
The key section is 7.03(A), located on page 7. (Bold is mine):
Subject to the provisions of Section 7.04 below, the University shall pay Brandon the greater of (i) one year's base salary at the rate in effect under Section 4.01 above on the date of such termination, or (ii) $250,000.
As much as we think that the university will not buy out a contract, they will if the circumstances permit it. These circumstances may permit it at the end of the season. I hope not.Schadenfreude wrote:I stand corrected. Beat me to it. You mean I'm the only one who saved a copy of this contract on their computer?
I'm banking on Brandon turning things around here and putting this discussion to rest.
87, I hope you are correct. But there is a disturbing quote in today's Blade.1987alum wrote:I'm banking on Brandon turning things around here and putting this discussion to rest.
"I don't think it's that type of team that will just give up," quarterback Tyler Sheehan said. "We kind of gave up last year."
Very disappointing to actually hear a player admit that they quit last year. But I think player's "quitting" is a function of the coaches attitude and philosophy and not wanting to perform for that coach. Obviously, we are facing similar circumstances this year. And I find it very disheartening to even hear the starting QB mention the idea of this team quitting.

I don't know your sources. But I do know that I'm very skeptical.BGorDeath wrote:As much as we think that the university will not buy out a contract, they will if the circumstances permit it. These circumstances may permit it at the end of the season. I hope not.
I can't think of a single coach of a revenue sport at Bowling Green who has been fired -- which is to say, relieved of his or her duty before an employment contract was complete.
In football, for instance, it probably hasn't happened since before Doyt Perry, if it's ever happened at all. It certainly hasn't happened since Don Nehlen was hired in 1968.
So, honestly and with as much respect as I can muster: I don't buy what your say your sources are selling.
When I asked if your sources knew where the university was going to come up with the money, that was a serious question.
A quarter of a million dollars is a lot of money. We could probably argue for weeks about whether spending $250,000 to dispatch with Gregg Brandon a year early would be the highest and best use of that kind of money, wherever it could be found.
But that would miss the real question. The real question is, would Greg Christopher and the people he answers to see canning Brandon as the highest and best use of that kind of money?
Given past history at Bowling Green, the answer seems obvious.
The answer would seem to be "no."
Oh man....for the other guys on the team to hear your starting QB the guy who leads you into battle admitting that is terrable.Warthog wrote:87, I hope you are correct. So is your spelling of "terrible".Falcon137 wrote:Oh man....for the other guys on the team to hear your starting QB the guy who leads you into battle admitting that is terrable.
In response to the point, I think it is sad that even players realize they gave up last year. You could almost see it in their faces as they left the field from the Mud Bowl...not that I expected them to be bouncing around after losing a game like that, but there was a blankness, it seemed.
However, I take just as much stock in the first half of his quote. "I don't think it's that type of team that will just give up." I believe this week vs. Kent State more than this past week against Miami(OH) will show what this team is about mentally. I don't know how a team can not be up for a game against a rival they KNOW has their number (and I put equal parts of responsibility for that on coaches and players, not the 80-20 it seems many are placing), but it happened. As Freak said, it's time for the seniors and captains to grab this team by the balls and right the ship. If they come out against Kent State and play BG football, I'll take any result they come away with. If they mail it in at the first sign of adversity as it sounds like they may have done last week, it could be a long November.

Unfortunately, yup.orangeandbrown wrote:Gregg Brandon will coach here until his contract is up. Get used to the idea.
I hope he keeps recruiting well so the next guy will have some nice talent to work with in '09. I'm concerned like many others around here that the lame duck effect could hinder recruiting.
Roll Along!
I have absolutely no doubt that GB will not be fired no matter the outcome of this season. It is a matter of money. BG simply doesn't have enough to pay GB and a new coach next year. What bothers me is the long term contracts that BG signs immediately after one good season. We try to keep a coach who has one good year. However, if any school with money comes calling, it will be the coach that we are trying to keep that will break the contract. I am not blaming Urban or any other successful coach. the reality is that BG cannot compete with the big boys no matter how many years we give the coach. Thus, we should quit offering contracts over two years. It will bite us more than it will ever help us and result in BG being stuck with an ineffective coach who has nothing more to offer.
