All you gotta do is bite your tongue, cross your fingers and hope for the best. It is out of our hands, and while us fans can certainly raise an ire of concern about what's going on, in reality it isn't going to do much. GB knows he's in a position here at BG to advance his career, I would hope he not see BG as the only stop in his career, and for that he should have motivation.

I read the link and I'm dumbfounded that GB would have the nads to ask for a contract extension at the end of last season. :smt017

Brandon's contract was extended after his second straight bowl winning season. He is only the second coach in school history to accomplish that.

The previous coach to win back-to-back bowl games was Gary Blackney. Blackney is not now remembered so fondly in these parts. One of his legacies is six straight losing seasons -- a school record.

But after the 1994 season, "Gary Blackney" was an incredibly hot name in coaching circles. He had a sick record in conference play at that point: 28-2-2 during his first four seasons. (Think about that!) Other programs were calling, and Bowling Green was anxious to keep him. So he got a long-term extension of some kind (I don't remember the details).

I guess my point is that these things really do make sense at the time.

I thought Brandon got an extension after the Motor City Bowl season?

I'm not sure exactly, on that but that's what I remembered, for some reason. My policy on contract extensions is simple: DON'T DO IT. The only time we should EVER offer a contract extension is the offseason before the final year in a contract. These long extensions are ridiculous and do nothing to give us any security. If the guy continues to be successful and other teams want him any extension we give will be irrelevant. But if he goes on to suck it up we're stuck with him.

Contract extensions shouldn't even be in consideration at BG. We just don't have anything to gain. The rumor is interesting, but if Christopher would've given Brandon an extension last year he would've been chased with pitchforks & torches. I have no idea how Gregg Brandon had the balls to ask for one with the job he's done here.

I'm hopeful that we'll buy him out after this season, but I'm still not convinced. A lame duck year would REALLY suck though, that I know.

I mostly agree with "no extensions".........but if the buy out on the original deal is low or nonexistant, you run the risk of having a good coach bolt on you. An extension may be your only means of keeping him on board. We had Urban Meyer here for a couple of seasons...I can see Krebs and co wanting to do what was needed to keep that scenario from repeating. The desire for some stability may have been a factor in extending Brandon's deal as quickly as they did.

The job Brandon's done here...Christ, not this s**t again...the guy had two very good years, one mediocre year and one bad year. I don't think that's cause to run him out of town on the rails.

I do agree that a lame duck scenario is unacceptable....

If other schools are legitimately wanting to steal your coach away a new extension with a larger buyout makes some sense, but all you're really getting is a larger monetary return when he bolts. No buyout that we can negotiate into a coach's contract is going to prevent schools with more money from stealing our coach. We just don't pay high enough to keep them.

And yeah, Flip. With the job Brandon's done here. He's had 2 successful years, 1 mediocre year, and 1 lousy year. When you put it that way it sounds decent. Personally, I'm not willing to overlook the fact that those successful years were his first and the team has gotten progressively worse since he's been here. I don't particularly like hearing his players say that they quit last year either. Basically my point remains, with the job he's done here, he's not even close to earning an extension, in my mind. If they can right the ship and win out I'd probably give him at least another year. If this season tanks and goes down like last year's then he must be fired.

Brandon would ask for an extension not only for personal job stability reasons but also makes recruiting a bit easier when you can say you'll be here for the length of a guys career.

That link up there states Brandon's current contract, which was extended after the MCB, is through the 2008 (next) season. I can't seem to find an extension after that, but it seems to me the incentives were increased after the GMAC Bowl win?

Hammb, we could be on your time line if there is truth here. If GB proves himself after this season, the season before his final contract year, he could get an extension. I wonder though, if GC will in fact have the nads or resources to offer a buyout or if we will have a lame-duck scenario. That would provide for some awful possibilities for the '08 season.

A Lame Duck season basically throws away an entire year of recruiting. There is always a dropoff in recruiting when you change coaches at the end of the year, but it would be even worse if we kept Brandon on until the contract expired and then brought in somebody else the following year.

At the end of this season they must either add on at least one year or part their ways with him.

What they did with Dan Dakich was a bad situation, and it's much worse in football.

I have absolutely zero confidence that we would buy him out if the rest of this season plays out as many of us fear.

What kind of impact does the fact we have only 12 seniors on the team have on recruiting? I'm guessing that the lame duck season effects next years recruiting signifcantly more and that is when we should have a lot more scholarships available.

But given the relatively small senior class we have this year, wouldn't this offseason be the better time to replace the coach? I know Brandon used the "got a late start on recruiting" excuse when he took over. If we brought in a new coach after this season, any "late start" excuse should be mitigated by the smaller number of scholarships coming available. Or is that all irrelevant and we still add 20-25 players each year?

Warthog - I'd guess that there would be less of an impact on recruiting this year, since we have fewer schollies to offer. And it looks like we've already made strong progress in filling those. I guess it could set us back on "preferred walk ons" and the like, but overall it would seem to be a better scenario.

I think we should take a lot more risks on recruiting this year since we have so few positions to replace. Sure go on ahead and get some average recruits to redshirt and get ready to play. But I think we should try and get that "one guy" who could be huge to our program that we could really start building around. Also just pulling in that one amazing recruit can help other big time recruits sign up. I hope we take our shots while we have a chance...
4th & 13 on PU 32yd line.. 56,000 fans up on their feet screaming, i held my breath the entire play trying to make as little noise as possible.. wouldnt u know Sharon would make the biggest touchdown catch in the history of BG Football, FALCON UP!
