Hershiser had good pro numbers, but how good was he as a Falcon? I have no idea.

I don't believe that he even played 4 years at BG let alone graduate and his relationship with the university has been strained, at best.

I also believe that its the policy of the university that they only retire the number of a player who not only completed their eligibility for the university but also graduated from the university (Which is why Rob Blake's number, among many others who've played pro hockey, hasn't been retired.)

Yup, against Kent State on May 4, 1979 (there's a James Rhodes joke to be made here, and surprisingly, I won't make it. ), though he only pitched one year after being cut from the team and dropping out of school his freshman year, and being cut again his sophomore year... a really interesting story, actually.

Perhaps a gesture like this could mend a a relationship with a very well known bg athlete who now has a national forum to sing our praises if he wishes. Allowing there to be a strained relationship or disconnect is a problem in many of these cases.

Doubtful. The story I heard is that before Orel decides to give back the University, they want the U to give him a degree. Also, he doesn't want one of those "Honorary Doctorates" but an actual degree.
