First win of the season

Post by SicSic80 »

Game just ended - Good guys won 5-3. Don't know any details, except that Nick was between the pipes. Anyone know the goal scorers?

2 from Whitmore, Perkin, Kantola, and Cepis each added one.

Always good to hear about a hockey win. Just a couple notes as I look over the stat sheet:

1) Eno had 26 saves on 29 shots. A sign of things to come?
2) NONE of our players had a negative +/-.
3) 15 shots on 7 power plays isn't what we should be shooting for. Sounds like we need more movement and shielding the goalie. The point of a power play isn't to find the perfect shot, just passing lanes to open an opportunity to score.

ND on Tuesday will be very telling about this team. They're arguably one of the better teams in the league, and we'll be playing on short rest on a long road trip.

Nick came up big on many bad turn overs and odd rushes, lots ot be proud of there for sure. For our second win of the year this good, first of those count to the tally sheet of NCAA play. lots of good team work from the calls on the radio, esp with about a two to go when Todd McIlrath fed a pass to Perkins who scored, wish i could have seen that one the call on the radio made it sound so slick. the other i would like to have seen was Kia's when it sounded like both teams were floundering in front of the crease. Felt bad for nick when he took the soft one on th e5 hole, but he bounced right back from that.
great game. good win

I'm no Barry Melrose, but I was in attendence tonight so here goes...

1) Cepis is the man. Whitmore too. He had a great homecoming with several fans of his behind the BG bench. Cepis skates with so much energy and is a great stick handler, looks like he has awesome finish. He seems like quite the talent. A joy to watch play.

2) Eno was very solid, but not spactacular. In my humble and uneducated opinion, we should've won this one 5-1, I didn't like a couple of the goals he let in. However, he was poised after a couple jittery looking moments in the first, and put his team in a position to win which is all you can ask. Many of his saves were right on, but he had a couple nice ones. I hope it doesn't spawn a goaltending controversy, but if we end up platooning Eno and Spratt, meaning both of them will be a little fresher when they play, I like our chances with either guy if we are playing good D.

3) We played solid defense tonight, especially in the first and third. We were a little lax in the second when RIT scored all three. However, I was extremely impressed with the intensity we sustained the whole game. After leading 3-1, then giving two back to make it 3-3, we kept skating hard and we out-skated them all night. We scored with one second left (I think that was Whitmore) to take a 4-3 lead into the dressing room, and didn't let RIT's run rattle us. That is what I was most impressed with.

4) The penalty kill was decent IMO, but our powerplay was horrendous in anyone's opinion. And there were so many chances for both teams. It was very chippy early, at one point four Tigers and three Falcons were in the bin at the same time!

5) Injuries: Page could not finish the game due to a leg injury, he went back to the dressing room midway through the second. Hopefully it's not too serious, but he was helped by two people and couldn't seem to put much weight on it. Hodgson was also involved in a big collision with two RIT guys, and lost his helmet in the process and was slow to get up. He was icing his head on the bench for a while, hopefully nothing serious and just a few cobwebs.

6) This game was a turnover-filled penalty fest. Not the prettiest hockey, but BG won it on the road in front of a pretty good crowd and that's all that counts. The team will need to improve this season to compete in the CCHA, but two games in there should be reason for guarded optimism. October hockey is never the most fluent no matter what the program as you get your legs under you, and I was proud of the way we competed for sixty minutes, we didn't turn off the intensity at any point. All in all, a very fun night. It might be the only game I see in person this year, so if that's the case I'm doubly thankful for a win. Thanks to all the BG fans who came out.

p.s. BEAT KENT !!!!!

What he said :smt023 and let me be the first to say.......we WILL beat the Irish on Tuesday night. (probably should have started a new thread for this, however this will have to do). Wish I could be there but alas I will find myself at church for our youth group. Think I'll take my laptop. :D
