The Defense
The Defense
This D is terrable. Can we please start talking about how bad this D is rather than the play calling or the QB play. BG will not win another MAC East or MAC title until they can get a half way decent defense.

We haven't had a good defense since I came here in 2005. We've been pathetic. I think we've only held teams below 10 points twice in 2005-07 (and one doesn't count since it was played in a muck-filled field in a monsoon). This season, our lowest points allowed was 20 to Kent State. 20 was our low-water mark for points allowed. Tonight we surrendered 38 to a pretty bad OU offense.
I have to wonder if we will EVER have a good defense at BG.

Ohio scores 38 points.
7 from the offense.
7 after a long kickoff return.
14 after muffed punts when the D held them and thought they got the ball back.
Correct me if I'm wrong (I think these all resulted in TDs) but if you take away the offense gave away and the 3 times the special teams give them great field position then we could say the D gave up some yardage and 10 points when they had a long field to defend. Considering what they had to work with IMHO they gave the team a chance to win.

They ripped at the ball to the point where they missed tackles but the ball never came loose. It would seem OU corrected this problem over the past week. The Niz wrote:OU committed 8 turnovers against UT. What happened to all of those tonight? I thought we had a defense that thrived on them.

Ok..after the long kickoff return it took OU all of 3 plays and under 2 minutes to score. Shall I give the horrid stats??? I shall....FalconTurf wrote:Ohio scores 38 points.

Rushing--264
Passing--166
Total O--430
TOP-----35:23
Those are not good stats if your a BG fan.
Lets recap how our D has done againt MAC teams.....
Temple- 35 points Total Yards 401 10th in scoring offense
Miami- 47 points Total Yards 499 12th in scoring offense
Kent- 20 points Total Yards 382 8th in scoring offense
OU- 38 points Total Yards 430 6th in scoring offense
We haven't even faced a top 5 scoring offense in the MAC yet! All I can say is thank the heavans we don't play Ball St., C. Michigan, or Western.
A defense who lives for turnovers is a bad defense. It means they can't stop anyone, they have to try and force turnovers because they can't stop anyone. This is why you see them trying to strip the ball every single play, because thats the only way they can get off the field.
I don't watch individual players on defense very much, but it doesn't seem like Erique Dozier has made a lot of plays this year. Is he making plays and I am not noticing? Are he and the other LB's getting whacked because the DL is getting pushed around due to size, inexperience, and injuries? Obviously, OU"s run game hammered our front 7 all night.
It also didn't help that our defensive backfield didn't make plays on the ball. I think it was the third down play before Charles' second punt drop when Antonio Smith was in good position and somehow managed to let the OU receiver have a free shot at the ball. Fortunately, he dropped the ball. Unfortunately, Zach Charles did the same on the next play. Just seems like our DBs try to strip the ball on every play without much success and can't make plays on the ball in the passing game.
Since GB's tenure began, it seems that all of our defensive units have the "let's try to stop them, but if we don't, the offense will probably outscore them" attitude. Doesn't work when the offense isn't clicking.

You mean the Western that lost to EMU 19-2 today?Falcon137 wrote:thank the heavans we don't play Ball St., C. Michigan, or Western.

OU played Scott at QB. Bower (sp?) was horrible at UT. Threw INT after INT. Scott was pretty rusty against UT when he came in and threw several into the dirt, but seemed to make better choices on where he threw. If Bower had played you might have seen some more TOs.The Niz wrote:OU committed 8 turnovers against UT. What happened to all of those tonight? I thought we had a defense that thrived on them.
Our defense blows, period.
The DL gets absolutely destroyed on almost every play. Our LBs don't fill holes. And as has been the case for years we're among the worst fundamental teams in the freaking nation. Where the hell did all this grasping at the ball come from? It's fu**ing retarded and I'm about sick of it. For years we lowered shoulders and didn't wrap up, so we never tackled. Now we don't even try to tackle because we're too preoccupied with the one in a thousand shot we might strip a ball!?

You had success with that style against Temple-it seems to have carried over. I was surprised at how often BG defenders tried to strip Temple ballcarriers rather than tackle them. Even more surprised that it worked. Then.hammb wrote:Our defense blows, period.

The D has been disappointing...I really thought going into the season the D would be the strength of the team. I know we have some injuries but every team does. It doesn't seem like we are getting enough pressure on opposing QBs, either.
One thing going in our D's favor for Akron is the Zips have absolutely no offense. Should be interesting...

The defense....the defense...what to make of the defense...ok, for starters year in and year out teams start schooling us in October and Npvemewbr by taking the bal and running it squarely at our defense. They did it last year, they did it in 2002 and it looks like they're going to do it this year....at this juncture, even the most optimistic of fans should be questionoing why we haven't caught onto that tactic yet.
Injuries at DT have hurt us...O'Dro is banged up'o, the key to our interior line, Nick Davis is out thanks to the dirty play of some hillbilly from WKU. That leaves a true freshman like Toresso, the hardworking and reasonably effective Barrow , Michael "where's he been at?" Ream and DJ Young....is there a bigger enigma on defense than DJ Young. The kid has the size and athleticism to be a monster DT in the MAC, but he never seems to have much of an effect on the flow of the game.
So far as the LB's and DB's go...Haneline has been great and everyone else has been...on the field. Mahone has made some plays here and there but beyond that, the secondary has been shaky. Is Antonio Smith any better than he was a s a freshman? Why are offenses so good at exploting our coverage schemes? How often do you see one of our DB's running downfield to catch up to a WR that's wide open? Do we have safeties, or do we have two guys trying to play run support on every down instead of covering the deep zones?
Buffalo and Toledo have backs = or < than OU's McCrae. They'll be chomping at the bit after they see the Miami and OU game footage

It's not the fall that hurts...it's when you hit the ground.
