The season is not over.

Post by Schadenfreude »

I think many of us wish the season was over at this point. But it's not over.

Here is a run down of what teams need to do to win seven games and become eligible to play in a bowl game without winning the MAC title:

Some margin of error:

Central Michigan (5-4): Win two out of the next three: at Western Michigan, Eastern Michigan, at Akron
Ball State (5-4): Win two out of the next three: at Indiana, Toledo, at Northern Illinois
Bowling Green (4-4): Win three out of the next four: Akron, at Buffalo, at Eastern Michigan, Toledo.

Clinging to life:

Miami (4-5): Win 'em all: Buffalo, Akron, at Ohio.
Buffalo (4-5): Win 'em all: at Miami, Bowling Green, Kent State
Toledo (4-5): Win 'em all: Eastern Michigan, at Ball State, at Bowling Green
Ohio (4-5): Win 'em all: Temple, at Akron, Miami.
Akron (3-5): Win 'em all: at Bowling Green, Ohio, at Miami, Central Michigan.
Temple (3-5): Win 'em all: at Ohio, Penn State, Kent State, at Western Michigan.

Stick a fork in ‘em:

Kent State (3-6)
Eastern Michigan (3-6)
Western Michigan (3-6)
Northern Illinois (1-8)

I think Miami wins the East and gets 6 or 7 wins and takes one of the bowl games. Either Ball St. or Central wins the West and the MAC and takes the 2nd. With the 3rd bid going to the runner up of the West.

It's worth chewing on this; Rick Chryst, interviewed during halftime of the Buffalo-Akron game, said he thought the MAC could have "three or four" teams in bowls.

The only way for the MAC to get beyond three is for some conferences to fall way short of their committments, leaving bowls to look our way for an eligible team.

Understanding what he implied, Chryst added something to the effect that there is a whole lot of football left to be played around the country.

Good Stuff, SF. While last night's loss put a huge dent in BG's possibility of winning the East (it can still be won but a lot has to fall right for BG now), we have a full month of football to be played. It is a long, hard, gruling 12 game season...injuries are hitting every team...including BG.

There is still much to play for...and I hope to get to the Doyt Friday night by 4:30 to see us reverse a recent losing trend vs Akron...and BG, I feel, is a better team than Akron.

I have a funny feeling that this team - like last year - is going to start packing up the tents.

I see BG losing against AT LEAST UB, UT, and UA. Akron has the top rated pass D in the MAC. UB is on a tear and playing with a great deal of confidence. UT will score at will against this defense. Besides, Brandon doesn't seem to get the team fired up to play a rival (see Brandon's record against UT).

It's "go through the motions" time for both team and fans.

A dim outlook, I know, but it is one I have sadly come to expect.

We don't deserve a bowl game.

Even if we did, how many of those 11,000 people are actually going to go?

Spot on. The regular season does not end until the end of November, right?

I for one have not thrown in the towel on this season just yet. As much as I dislike GB, I still think we can get a bowl bid if we win out. The Buffalo game will be the big game in the mix so hang in there folks...the ride just might get fun!!!!

If we lose to Akron, this team is dead to me until next year. The chips are all-in this Friday night.

He would arrive at half time and invent a time machine to travel back to the second qtr. Then he'd leave....
