Mens Sports
First the good news the hockey team didnt get swept this weekend
After watching last nites meltdown at the Doyt and witnessing the hockey program fall into the depths of college hockey I was wondering what exactly is going on with this sports program. From the outside it looks like Christopher is trying to be proactive but is it going to change this culture of losing that has been established over the last few years at BG?
With facilities falling below rival schools, and bandwagon attendance, it suddenly hit me that we might be looking back at this decade as the end of BG sports as we know it.
Ive noticed that over the last 10 years many hockey fans are no longer frustrated after losses to inferior opponents. Only a short time ago these losses would actually effect us up until Wed. of the work week, but year after year of losing no longer really seems to bother us. We now come on here and say we have a young team, or the offense will come around etc.
I think the football program might be reaching this tranquilizing effect as we speak. We are not suprised anymore with lackluster performances, its almost accepted that we can lose a home football game to anyone in the MAC now. WTF Gameday was here 4 yrs ago.
The mens sports program is crucial to the moral and identity of an institution, Any thoughts from my fellow Falcon fans?

Your view is a valid one. I just say to give Christopher a chance. I think he's going to be VERY good. He's already proven himself very capable in the job (2007 FB schedule debacle not withstanding.) The Orr hiring was excellent and the extension of Miller was another nice feather in his cap.
More news is on the way and it will have rather long term effects on the men's programs.

Yes. Please explain how the men's sports program is crucial to the moral of the institution.

It goes hand in hand. While some people might be truly happy driving around a rusted 1972 car. many others would rather have a 2003 Camry.
sports effects the school as a whole like it or not, it effects enrollment, money donated etc.
In the MAC Kent saw a spike in enrollment by 8% the year following their NCAA tounrey run.
You cant say that moral was the same at BG in 2003 as it is now when the football team was tearing Sh*t up. Profs were talking about the team, houses on Wooster had signs up of BGSU not OSU, nobody skipped the NIU game to stay at home and watch Ohio State versus Northwestern on TV. Do you want me to keep writing

Since you didn't catch your spelling faux-pas:
Moral: relating to principles of right and wrong; i.e. to morals or ethics; "moral philosophy"
Morale: How a unit feels about itself and its abilities.

your right some good things, VERY big will be announced by this AD, but I dare say he is not good, not totaly bad either he is more so unproven to this point.
A good Ad would have made sure to focus on BGSU traditions and not "creating new ones form his office" A tradition made up by the students is one thing and that is how it happens...Im over the logo deal because in the end, that was more driven by the youth on campus, than the alumni and fans.
Sure he will be announcing the future building pans for the hockey and basketball teams, and that will make big, BIG news. Those have been long coming for a long time and planing for this and thoughts on them started before he got here, his roll in this and the resulting facility, facilities or patch jobs will tell us more about his abilites and goals.I think this announcement is suposed to be coming soon after the first of the year, isnt it?
he will likely play a key roll in the hiring of several coaches
and I dare say how good or bad he is will likely hinge on his actions related to those key items more so than anything els he has done like the cards at the hockey games..which are stupid and not correct...I do hope he hires and builds better than that...were doomed if for sure if he doesnt!

The Fiesta Bowl? Boy you just made my day, I haven't laughed like that in quite a long time. Talk about taking one sport and transplanting it into another.McConvey wrote:This from the very same guy who expounded loud and proud that he'd never go to another BG game till they won the Fiesta Bowl, or whatever the hell it was you said.bgsufalcon24 wrote: Best post I've seen today. Do me a favor, stick to the football forum.
Oh yeah, what in hell are you talking about? I go to hockey games all the time. It would be nice if they didn't finish last in the conference again this year though...

True BG hockey finishes last....but would you rather play in a major conference play top teams and beat them on occasion and finish last... or in a basically play Division 2 i.e. the Mid American Conference play nobody anyone has herd of other than Miami and still not win conference?
The AD needs to focus on a sport we have tradition in, as well as a chance at a National Championship.
Yes, I'm biased because I love hockey, but MAC football is a joke period.

I'm not sure that we have a better chance of winning the NC in hockey than we do in hockey, right now. Certainly in the not too distant past we had a much better shot on the ice than on the grass...err turf. After all we did win the title in 1984. However, the football team is at least competent to some degree, while hockey is not. Football has only had 1 losing season in the last 6 and are standing .500 this year. .500 is a dissapointment for the football team most years. But hockey, if our hockey went .500 I'd be thrilled! As it stands right now I think Scott Paluch is a terrible coach that can't recruit, and as long as he is here the program is going absolutely nowhere. Gregg Brandon looks like Bo Schembechler compared to Paluch.PegCityFalcon wrote:True BG hockey finishes last....but would you rather play in a major conference play top teams and beat them on occasion and finish last... or in a basically play Division 2 i.e. the Mid American Conference play nobody anyone has herd of other than Miami and still not win conference?

I know that winning the NC in football would require going unbeaten at least one season, maybe even two because we wouldn't be #1 or #2 after the first year. It seems impossible and maybe I'm delusional, but I think we've got a better shot at that than hockey winning the NC. We'd have to finish top 3/4 in the CCHA to make the NCAA tourney, then win 4 games in a row against the top teams in the country to win it all. That's just not possible right now for our hockey program. I don't think winning 1 out of 4 of those NCAA tourney games is possible right now, much less all 4 (unless we're facing Michigan, we always seem to beat them) Maybe once the program looks at least a little bit competent I'll change my tune.
Lastly - to say that we don't have tradition in football is bullshit^3.

To say that we have a better chance to win a National Championship in football than in hockey is ridculous. First off, even if we went undefeated 3 years in a row I don't think we would make to the NC game, let alone, win it. And lets not even talk about going undefeated in football, because we all know that isnt going to happen, atleast not in the next 15 years. Calling the football team competent has much to be desired, this team has probably the least amount of focus I have seen since I've been at BG. They have talent, but are not focused at the task at hand to get anything done.bgsufalcon24 wrote:I'm not sure that we have a better chance of winning the NC in hockey than we do in hockey, right now. Hockey on the otherhand would be much easier to win a national title. We have talent on this team. We are just VERY young. To say that Paluch cant recruit is a little far-fetched as well, He only brought in the 9 best freshman forward this past year in Cepis, and it looks as if Kantola will be a real stud. Paluch can recruit, he just has a hard time of getting the kids to buy into his system, which is bad in and of itself. We can compete with the Michigan's, Ohio State's, Michigan State's of hockey, but there is no way in hell that we will ever be able to compete with those schools in football. The hockey team will show much improvement this year. Personally, I am more excited about the Hockey and basketball seasons, than I am for the rest of the football season.

More people Identify BGSU with hockey than football Nationally do to our long standing success. yes football had been doing well, but truth be told the spiral is heading sub field turf. hockeys biggest recruiting hurdle is the facility, SP has done a good job recruiting, we have good players, and the bottom tier hole were in is being climbed out of right now. Sure when he came the players of Buddies were not in sync with a Jy style of coaching and East coast hockey, those bad seeds should have been booted, and we would have faired better, but that is history now and we now hav ethe right players and the right coaches.
But to think that anyone can play in anything more than some token BCS bowl, 6 weeks after the season ends is very, very delusional, football is riged hockey is determined on the ice.
