Sports Illustrated Article

Post by Falcon Fanatic »

A fellow BG alum at work showed me an article that is in the new Sports Illustrated. It is about the Mid-Majors and there is a section about Toledo playing NIU on a Tuesday night. One student said: "On the one hand," NIU student, Aaris Berry complains, while tailgating, "we've got the university president taking out an ad in the school paper telling us the the team needs us to be at the game. On the other hand we've got professors scheduling quizzes during the night classes, making sure we don't go." And this response from the UT student: "A lot of kids are blowing off classes anyway, " adds frat brother Marquis Naylor, "I mean, this is Toledo."

Does this comment by a UT student surprise anyone? Good way to represent your school in a national magazine!!

EDIT: Sorry to the ut fans, since I obviously misread the article and jumped to conclusions. I am sure you can see why that happened though. 8)

"Regarding BGSU, I would think their biggest strength is that they never give up, They never slow down and they battle hard even after the other team scores. We have to be on our game and never, ever take the foot off the gas for a second."

"BG was relentless. It's like they know that a good first pass on the breakout from a defenseman will almost always result in an odd-man rush against them - but they go in anyway and dare you to make that pass. All three of their goals were just grit and effort. That's a team any fan can be proud to support...they give all they've got."

Un-Falcon-believable. Proof that that school remains an infected boil on MAC's buttocks.

Two notes about that article since I get SI now.

1) I was under the impression the comment came from a NIU student. I'll have to go home and double check that though. If it is from a NIU student then the comments makes much more sense and seems pretty logical.

2) The best line in the article was by NIU coach Novak who said something along the lines of..."We love the national attention, but it kinda feels like we are prostituting these kids out". I couldn't agree more with him.

Novak has quickly become one of my favorite coaches for this very reason. he stands up to the Big schools and tells it like it is. How many articles have we seen him quoted in, while giving it to the big boys and the BcS about how much they suck and their system is balogna? This reason makes him a smooth rub, and I for one am glad that he has the balls to say that stuff, and nto worry about what others will think about it.

Hmmm..... I went back and re-read the article and you are right. I honestly thought it was a Toledo kid saying that. Still, any student saying that in a national magazine, is kind of stupid. Should I go in and change the posting or just let it go???????? Golly, sure wouldn't want to offend any UT people that are here.

EDIT: Decided to go back and make an apology. I really need to get back to work.....off task too much today....just like my buddy Freak!!!

While I dont like the idea of anyone blowing off classes for any reason, I will say that while I never had to during my years at BG, I would have blown off a dozen classes to see BG play. It seems like a logical statement to me because it was a huge game for both NIU and UT. Sometimes you just have do what is more important, class or the biggest football game of the season up to the that point? I'd take the football game.
