Inside of just three minutes, I was already wondering if Knight is best natural rebounder that I've seen in a BG uniform (i.e., since the mid 70's). He's lightning quick off of the floor and has great hands. He's long. He has Germain Fitch's ability to react instantaneously to the ball. Beyond that, he's multi-dimensional. He made a number of heady plays and has a decent stroke. Also, he can maneuver on the block, and advertised, displayed a tough mid-range game. He might be our best player. He has MAC Freshman of the Year written all over him.
Jakubowski looked good. He's very fast and has quick hands. He's a natural penetrator, which is another thing we haven't had in a long time in a PG. However, he looked a little out of control at times. He'll be a fixture in the rotation and has a shot at starting before the end of the year.
Polk was a little disappointing. He wasn't any more mobile or active than last year. He didn't have any more muscle tone, but he did look a little lighter. Eh, it's early in the year.

I enjoyed the game thoroughly. Knight is going to be fun to watch, maybe POY material. I liked the fact the we crashed the boards everytime a shot went up. Over the span of the season, I think we will be alright when we come to MAC play. Oh, and Coach Orr is much more animated than I thought he would be based on the few conversations I have had with him.

For what it's worth...here are my thoughts....
The Bad
-----------
Darryl Clements - Got a good amount of playing time at PG and still looks turnover prone like last year. Made some bad decisions with the basketball and it felt like most of our turnovers came with Darryl running the point. If Darryl is going to log meaningful minutes this year we need him to TAKE CARE OF THE BASKETBALL.
Erik Marschall - Street Clothes. Not sure why, but not what you like to see. Hopefully he'll be ready to go at the Peggy Cronin Classic in Cincinnati.
The So So
------------
Nate Miller - Nate struggled with his shot last night and he looked frustrated about it. He is still going to be one of the best players on this team and I chalk this up to nothing more than an off night. And as bad as it looked he still led all scorers with 15 PTS. He's our leader and worked hard all game even though he struggled and that's what I love about Nate.
OP - Didn't play much at all in the first half, but had a pretty decent second half getting some offensive rebounds and stick backs. I expect that we'll see better things out of Otis throughout the year.
The Good
-----------
Brian Moten - Moten didn't have a fantastic game, but I put him here because I liked the fact that he was being aggressive.
JJ - Man, this kid was refreshing to watch. FINALLY...someone with serious handles and quickness bringing the ball up the court. Single handedly broke Wayne State's press a couple of times. We had major problems last year when teams pressed us. I think JJ might quickly become one my favorite players on this squad and it appears as if he has a pretty solid perimeter shot as well.
CK - 13 points and 13 boards....but it felt like he had at least 20pts. Has the ability to create his own shot. He's quick to the basketball. I really believe we're looking at a guy who is going to be a prolific scorer here at Bowling Green before he's done.
Other's
---------
Madlock - Only played the final minute.
Dusan - Didn't play a much at all. I think he only took one shot.

Roll Along!
I'd put Hamblet on your list with Clements there JimmyZ.
Both of them were guilty of some very lazy passes on the perimeter...not what you want to see from guys that were the primary ball handlers when they were out there. JJ definitely looked more comfortable in the role than either of those two upper classmen did.
On Polk his fouls were mostly of the ill advised variety. One was the dreaded moving screen. Honestly, I don't know why they called the foul, it was a textbook block and his hands were definitely inside the shoulder pads of the defender. He put his body on the guy and pancaked him...he'd look good at LT, I think
His other fouls seemed to be while battling for Rebounds. He's a big body, but he's not a real natural rebounder, when it comes to timing his leaps, etc.
Otis is raw, but he's got a great basketball body and he's got some good talent. I don't expect him to be lights out this year, but hopefully he'll develop as the season goes on.

The unis are just like I hoped they'd be after seeing the road version. They really are an updated, basketballified version of the old hockey unis... which is awesome.

That's a small but good thing that can help with fan support. When people can see names, they can identify with and remember the players better.

Yeah, it's always bugged me, because it usually takes 3-4 games to figure out who is who...having the names on there will help.BleedOrange wrote:hammb wrote:Also of note, they have the players' names on the backs!TG1996 wrote:The unis are just like I hoped they'd be after seeing the road version. That's a good call... yeah, I know all that stuff. lol... I just left the thing on Auto all evening and took what it gave me. Faster shutter speed, higher ASA/ISO settings would have helped, but it was an exhibition game.VDub26Falcon wrote:Grant...I'm no photographic genius so this is an uneducated suggestion but for some of those action shots that came up blurry, did you try increasing your shutter speed? Again, completely uneducated suggestion.

I'm also no photographic genius, but I have tried to take action photos in Anderson Arena and it's really tough with a regular digital camera. It's so dark in there that you really cannot up the shutter speed without a tradeoff in the ISO. Then you get good action shots, but they're really noisy.VDub26Falcon wrote:Grant...I'm no photographic genius so this is an uneducated suggestion but for some of those action shots that came up blurry, did you try increasing your shutter speed? Perhaps I'm off base, but I think you really need a good SLR type camera with a good lens to get good action shots in there. Metz is a photographer so he could probably speak more to it than I.
All I really care about is the cheerleader photos anyway, and they turned out good
