Falcon Icers Win Again in OT 5-4!!!!!

Post by Falconboy »

We struck early and often to go up 4-0 but slowly but surely WMU snuck back into it to tie it 4-4 in the 3rd period. Kevin Schmidt gets the tie breaking goal in OT to win it. Its great to get the sweep here, as I don't remember us getting to many of these last year. Lets keep up the momentum vs N.Mich next weekend.

I think we play Ferris State next weekend. Good win tonight despite a very nervy 3rd period.

Man Oh man that was a FUN GAME! GREAT SWEEP GUYS!!!!!
GRIPES...The ref...my lord...show some consistency...and not call the goalie interferance at the end of the GAME that gave their 4th goal...for cripes sake what did he need to do Skate over to his bench....the there was bad call on McIlrath..."DIVING" yea Id like to show that ref a clif and see if when i push him off if thats a dive...
:x
but to his credit..his bizaro land calls and non calls did pretty much balance out...I was wondering if we were going to have the whole team in the box. and stack players up in the chairs...lol

is this and Im chalking it up to growing pains...that is when this team is hot and playing the game fast and aggressive...with a lead let them...cause we really need to work on lulling the other team to sleep... My god we went fromi Attila to Gandhi with no time spent in wind down....it will come Im sure.

Those four 3rd period goals...as i saw them the break down was two earned,
Sprat could never have stoped the one back door, and the deflection by our team.
The long shot was a soft goal...i think he should have been able to stop that one..and judging by his reaction I think he thought so too...
the last goal was no goal..plain and simple

My assessment is that the team is working well and the quality of the coaching is really clearly apparent and this goes to say that we now have the right players to make it work...dam good players folks, if you have not been to a game in awhile get over to the rink this is going to be a good season folks, and its going to be one of those that in a few more years youll be able to say, yea I was at the games in 07 when this team turn around.

I'm not willing to say that yet, but by the looks of things it appears that the icers have turned a corner. Let's see if that translates into more wins in the near future. Cautiously optimistic is probably the best description for what I'm feeling right now.

Nervy? It was FRICKIN' NERVE-RACKING!!!! I thought I was going to have a heart attack, stroke or both!!! When that puck bounced off Spratt and hit the crossbar and went on top of the net......I thought I was going to pass out! I was SOOO exhausted after the game....BUT WOW...WHAT AN AWESOME FEELING!!

WAY TO GO SCHMITTY!!!! YOU ROCKED THE HOUSE, BABY!!!
"Regarding BGSU, I would think their biggest strength is that they never give up, They never slow down and they battle hard even after the other team scores. We have to be on our game and never, ever take the foot off the gas for a second."

"BG was relentless. It's like they know that a good first pass on the breakout from a defenseman will almost always result in an odd-man rush against them - but they go in anyway and dare you to make that pass. All three of their goals were just grit and effort. That's a team any fan can be proud to support...they give all they've got."

Guys while these two OT wins are great, we need to keep things in prospective. WMU is a team we will be fighting with all year to stay out of the cellar. They beat Windsor 5-2 then got swept by Niagra. So while a sweep of anybody is nice I doubt anyone is going to be jumping on the BG bandwagon for this.

This is similar to beating Eastern in football while it is nice it should also be expected, not a huge suprise and cause for celebration.

When I saw the score posted I couldnt believe it I was so excited then after a minute or two I realized just where this program stands when sweeping Western twice in OT feels like we just won a NCAA tourney game.

that is just it Dannyk, every win is a win that counts toward the NCAA Championship. Every win is a confidence booster. Every win is a win out of last place. right now we are tied for 5th in the CCHA, that is subject to todays 2pm game at Ohio state with Ferris...
This is something to get on the "band Wagon" over. the more people on the Band Wagon, the more fans in the stands the more these guys will want it more. did you see them looking to the fans lastnight...imagine how they would feel in a packed rink, imagine how you would feel in a packed rink...This team is good enough to fill the house. A couple more wins is all it will take. this overtime sweep is worth being excited about.

I agree that these are nice wins but a decade of crappy teams is not going to be reversed by an OT win over Western. People like us who follow every game enjoy these wins but your average Joe who picks up the Sentinel this morning is not going to rush to the next home game because of an OT win over a struggling Western program.

Sure we may get a large crowd here and there but the true state of attendance and fan involvement is measured by our attendance against bottom feeders like Western. When fans come to watch BG and not the other team it will be obvious that the program is going in the right direction.

These are some good points, I tend to agree with them. But at least we're starting in the right direction. Lets see if we can keep it up. Yes, beating and sweeping teams like ND or Mich, OSU ,MSU mean a lot more cuz those are high quality teams. We certainly haven't arrived yet. Lets keep all things in perspective. I'm certianly a bit more optimistic about this year than last.

Never thought I'd be saying this at all this year, but these next two games against FSU will show us what we are made of. FSU has been dominate in thier last two games. They shutout Notre Dame, who let's face it is not back to last years form, and also shutout tOSU and play them today, Ohio State is looking absolutley dreadful this year.

I had a great time at this game. I thought the crowd was really into it. I love those students. Students, bring your friends. Even I was singing Sweet Caroline.

Western got back in the game in the last minute of the second period when one of their players checkd our guy from behind after the whistle. Incredibly, after all was sorted out, Western was on the power play. This action led to two impossible to stop goals with a two man or just stepping back on one man advantage early in the third. Completely bad call.

Third goal we could have stopped. Fourth goal looked like our goalie was interfered with.

Yes, I read the posters saying to keep it in perspective- it was Western slow Michigan. I agree 100%.

But....

We won two straight OT games- one on the road. We skated hard, hit hard and looked like we were having fun last night. I don't understand everything about hockey- I do understand that watching guys like Fr Jacob Cepis is fun. This guy looks good. And the game winner? What other sport gives you that kind of rush when you win? Just seeing our guys pile out of the bench and onto to the ice was tremendous. What a pass and shot!

Plus Todd Reirden looks like a positive on the bench- and sounds good postgame. I bet this guy can get us some players with his BG ties, personality and background.

Play hard, have fun, good luck.

Go Falcons!

Why is it that anytime something good happens to a BG team, there's always somebody that wants to temper the enthusiasm?

GREAT JOB HOCKEY!!! After winning a grand total of SEVEN games last year, the Falcons are already at 3 this year...that says something.

3-2-0, 2-1-0 CCHA...good solid start. Just take them one at a time and give a great effort every night.
