South Carolina and Clemson to stay home for holidays

This is the word on the street. Coaches will opt not to accept bowl bids because of the fight last Saturday.

According to other message boards, ESPN News is the source for the Clemson's decision. WVOC radio in Columbia, S.C. is reporting the South Carolina decision.

This is big. It means a fourth bid for the MAC seems a strong possibility... and that Bowling Green could be in the post season no matter what happens tommorrow.

I know some of you thought that all along, but I wasn't buying into that idea ... until now.

I'll continue to reserve judgment until the official announcements, but I hope (as I've posted elsewhere) that this is true. It would restore some faith in collegiate athletics. It would be nice for the MAC to reap the direct benefit, too.

Looks like even though they are heated rivals that they were able to look at this from a rational perspective.

Neither team had a choice.
Insiders here at the TV station I work out tell me that the SEC wasn't going to let either team go to a bowl game because of the fight anyway, so both teams came out and said the same thing to save face.

Whether it was the Administration of the two colleges, or the two athletic conferences making the decision, the RIGHT decision was made.

It's unfortunate that such action had to take place and that the last game of Lou Holtz will be remembered by this fiasco.

As a result of this, CFN is predicting that not 2, not 3, not 4, not 5, but 6 (!!) MAC teams will be playing in bowls. I know everyone seems to have something against or problem with CFN, but this would be great if it were to happen.

I'm really not going to take much of CFN's latest projections to heart. Not because they're CFN, but because we're the MAC.

The MAC gets screwed. It's what we do best.

I'm just going to hope really hard that NIU handily defeats Miami and then cheer my brains out tomorrow for the Falcons to make UT look like babies.

Hopefully we'd get the leftover bowl in that scenario. Until then, I don't think it would be wise to start making travel plans for late December.

Well, for what its worth, cfn has us going to the Houston bowl vs. Colorado.

They also have AKRON playing Fresno St. in the SVC.

So, like I said -- for what its worth...

Oh yeah, and they have Marshall going to the Las Vegas Bowl...AWW HELL NO!!!!!

It would be a total coup to get six bowls...heck, even four this year. That is enough where the profit sharing could make a difference to the member teams. The benefit would be the overall exposure to our conference and exciting gamplay. I think a lot of our teams could take their likely oppenents in these games to the woodshed. As unlikely as it seemed with the horrid OOC performances we had earlier this year, this could turn out to be a banner year for the MAC.

Wow...looking at espn.com's bowl projections 2 guys have 5 MAC schools going and the other 2 have 6 MAC schools going....incredible. Also, all 4 pick us to go to the GMAC bowl...

With all of these bowls, we don't need to jump at the first thing coming our way. I hope we get a good insight into the possibilities and play in the bowl with the best competition. For instance, we don't need to jump at the GMAC bowl, if we can get in the Houston Bowl. The Houston bowl is $1.1 M in payout and would probably have the strongest competition. We can't get greedy, but on the other hand, we need to take advantage of this opportunity for the MAC. Who knows if this will ever happen again.

Actually, we probably will.

We do know this: As of this moments, three bowls have contracts with the MAC. If one of those bowls select us, we have to take it. (Unless some here think it would be wise for us to pull a Texas Chicken University. I don't).

After that, who knows?

I imagine Rick Chryst is about to embark on an all nighter staying on the phone with bowl reps. We very well could have a fourth bowl under contract by this time tommorrow.

Chryst would seem to be in a real position of strength. If bowls aren't careful, they could get stuck with Marshall, Troy State or -- gulp -- Akron.

(Akron deserves a bowl more than Marshall. But the bowls won't see it that way. And let's face it: Neither school really deserves a bowl).
