GMAC Bowl: Who will go??

Just wondering how many BG fans would come down to Mobile for the game?
I think if you ask the Marshall or Miami-Ohio fans, you'll find Mobile is a great place with friendly folks. The city really supports the game, and the weather is usually perfect. I'll be hanging around, so if anyone has questions about hotels, bars, the stadium, etc., please don't hesitate to ask or email. We're looking forward to y'all coming down to Mobile... assuming y'all get the invite. Here's some info to get you started.

Honestly?

I'm personally hoping we get a chance to play Fresno State in San Jose. I missed the '82, '85 and '91 Cal Bowls. The idea of squaring off again with Fresno State out west appeals to my sense of nostalgia. Who knows when the opportunity might come again?

Also - and again, just being honest -- I think most fans would like the chance to square off with Minnesota in Detroit. That's an appealing opponent, and an easy drive for us.

But I want to travel, and we all just want a chance for the Falcons to play somehwere. If it's Mobile, I'll be there with bells on my toes (and hope for Memphis. We've never played Memphis, and the Tigers look like a program on the move).

My only question is this: Where is the nearest good beach, and what are the chances the weather will be beach worthy?

To my feathered friends: I'll vouch for MobileBama here on friendliness. I went down for the Bowling Green-Alaama game in Birmingham in 1996, and fans were really cool.

(And smart, too. While picking up a case at a Winn Dixie after the game, a grey-haired woman who couldn't have been a day under 70 saw our BGSU T-shirts and complimented us on how well our quarterback read the blitz. )

Another thought for my feathered friends:

The first post in this thread strikes me as a hint we may be headed for Mobile. Until now, I was thinking we were headed for San Jose with a win tommorrow. Now I'm not so sure.

well, with Hurricane Ivan, things are still very messed up down along the beaches. They are an hour south of Mobile. You can still park in Gulf Shores and walk down the beaches, but some of the roads may still be closed closer to the AL/FL state line.

You have some valid reasons for choosing those bowls over Mobile. Just make sure you get a bunch of people and head on down to Bama if y'all get the invite. I had a blast with the Miami fans. I set-up a Miami headquarters Tuesday night at a bar downtown and I think everyone had a good time. I may move it to another bar that's more spacious. They brough a lot more fans than I had imagined. Make sure you DON'T miss the Mardi Gras parade and Pep-Rally Tuesday night downtown. It's a blast.

Here is the way I see our bowl schedule (for those of you who havn't it out, I'm in the Marching Band): Where ever we go, if we go, it is still a bowl game. True, some bowls are more prestigous than others, but it's still a bowl game. I know last year we had a blast in Detroit. I know that personally I would rather go someplace out west like california becaue I've never been there. That is assuming that the band would go too (which all the rumors I've heard have point to so). If the Athleic dept and CMA isn't willing to send the FMB out west, I'd rather play up the street at Ford Field. No matter where we go bowling, it will be a good day, and a good trip. If on the off chance the band doesn't go, I will do everything I can in order to be there and cheer on the Falcons to another Bowl Championship. Bottom line is, I really don't care where we go, as long as we go.

Sorry if I've offended anyone. I'm just one who is estatic that we should be going bowling in december. Go Falcons.

From everything I have heard, including from people in our athletic department, the GMAC Bowl is the classiest of the group, and the best "bowl" atmosphere. I am looking forward to heading to Mobile, right after we kick Toledo's butt!

There is also talk on the Miami board that BG may get the GMAC Bowl invite. It is a really good time, and I can vouch for the Mobile people...very hospitable and gracious! I am honestly hoping Miami gets the invite again because I would love to go back! Good luck tomorrow night...we'll be watching!

I heard a "Barber Shop Rumor" that we were going to be invited to the GMAC bowl also. An unnamed player was in the shop today and told us this.

Try Pensacola- and hour drive to Mobile
or Mobile- obvious
or Biloxi- 45 minutes
or New Orleans- 2hr 15 min

Hotels:

*Adams Mark- downtown
Holiday Inn Express- downtown
Grand Hotel- Fairhope, Ala
*Radisson- downtown
The Malaga Inn- downtown
-all hotels, except Grand Hotel, are on Mardi Gras parad route. You can watch parade right in front of hotel, and easy/safe walk to downtown bars/restaurants. Get rooms before media people!

Not that I was looking ahead or taking my wife's goodwill for granted, but ... I did a little fare-hunting and found some great deals to New Orleans, while the other airports mentioned were much pricier.

After we beat Toledo and IF my wife OKs a bowl trip, I think Noah & I would fly into the Big Easy and drive to Mobile as it would be cheaper in the long run.
