with Clemson now out that opens up a FIFTH bowl slot for MAC schools... I need a drunken icon here... but I would be delirious if this happens.

We have four teams that are pretty close to each other in terms of being bowl-worthy; Northern Illinois, Toledo, Bowling Green and Miami.windycityfalcon wrote:Lets just beat Toledo and then we won't have to worry about it.
And by the looks of it.. there could be some sorry mid-majors in bowls if the MAC gets more than three bids.. Marshall (ok.. maybe worth it, but not really.).. Who's next.. ball st.
Then come the other two eligible (but not very worthy) teams: Marshall and Akron.
I assume a bowl would take Marshall first (and, yes, I know Akron beat Marshall. The bowls don't care).
My guess is that Akron would be the very last school in the country invited to a bowl game. After that, I have no idea what would happen.... maybe the NCAA would step in and permit a 6-6 team (Michigan State?) to go somewhere so a game isn't cancelled.

Is there really that big of a problem with finding bowl eligible teams this year? I mean to the point that the MAC gets six bids and there are STILL bowls looking for eligible teams?
If so, what the heck is going on this year? Is this an issue of parity, or is it simply a fluke? I thought I knew quite a bit about college football, but this bowl stuff is for the birds! Well, Falcons, that is!!!
Seriously, though, if anyone has any insight I'd appreciate it.

My Opinion.. for what it's worth.. and that's not much according to some.. but here it is anyway.
I think the problem filling bowls has to do with the fact that the Mid-Majors are catching up to the Big Boy conferences when it comes to talent.
Those few non-conference games for the "Big Teams" aren't cake walks anymore.. and in many cases the "Big Teams" are getting beat by teams from Mid-Major conferences.
So instead of going into conference play 2-0, 3-0.. only having to win a few games to become bowl eligible.. the "Big Teams" are going in with one or two losses, and failing to win enough conference games to get a bowl birth.
That opens the doors for The Mid-Majors and it's about damn time.

I agree that it's about damn time, but I thought that mid-majors were having kind of a down year when it came to beating BCS conference teams? Or maybe this was just the MAC. I'll admit that I don't follow the WAC or MWC or CUSA (who cares, really?) as much as I probably should, so I could just be hangin' out in the dark here.

Several new bowl games have formed since 2001, the last time the NCAA only permited schools to play eleven games.Bleeding Orange wrote:Is there really that big of a problem with finding bowl eligible teams this year? Last year, with 12-game seasons, a 6-6 team was permitted to go to a bowl game as long as its conference had a pre-existing contract with the game.
This year, only 6-5 cuts it. The laws of chance meant there would be fewer bowl eligible teams.
Meanwhile, there are more bowls. A few of us suspected all season that the bowl games would be cutting it close. Right after the Northern Illinois loss, I raised the possibility of a third bowl opening up to the MAC (and was generally snickered at, but whatever. I don't feel the need to point out I WAS RIGHT and SOME OF YOU WERE WRONG. I'm a bigger man than that.).
If you were looking for a fluke, today's decision by Clemson and South Carolina to stay home for the holidays was it.
Even before today, there was a chance a fourth game would open up to us. Now it seems virtually certain.

MAC schools went 1-21 vs. BCS competition, so the MAC didnt do anything to pull its own weight this year. The fact of the matter is that you have lots of teams that just beat the crap out of each other and more then your fair share of 9-2, 10-1, and 11-0 teams. This causes for their to be pockets of teams that are qualified, a whole lot more who wont make it.
