Impact of this week's mid-week MAC games on BG

Post by BGSU33 »

Tuesday and Wednesday will be interesting days of MAC football if you are a BG fan. Obviously, on Wednesday we are all hoping for Akron to beat Miami, period. There’s no other way to look at it, we need Akron to win to keep our chances of a MAC Championship alive. But even if that doesn’t happen, the silver lining in all of this is, WE, no one else but us, control our destiny for a possible bowl berth. If we take care of Buffalo and Toledo, even if we don’t get to play in the MAC Championship, we should be going to a bowl. The following quote from Gregg Brandon was pulled from over on bgsufalcons.com and he hit the nail right on the head:

"Obviously we are going to need some help but I think that the goal was to win these last four and we are half way home and if we can win these next two we will be in a bowl game. We will be virtually locked. Lose one of them then I think it is going to be a beauty contest. Lose both and we probably are not going to a bowl."

No doubt about it. If we win our last two games, we should be in. If we split, hold your breath. And if we lose both, we’re likely home for the holidays again.

This leads me to the game on Tuesday between Toledo and Ball State. Both teams are 5-5 overall and the winner is very much alive in the bowl picture despite already being eliminated from the MAC West race with CMU already having locked it up. I think BG would actually be better served to have Toledo beat Ball State. I say this because BG actually has a shot at beating Toledo head-to-head but we won’t see Ball State at all. Now a lot can still happen in the next two weeks with bowl positioning and all, but if things play out on the average, my guess is we’ll seeing something like CMU going to the Motor City and Miami going to the GMAC. That would leave the International Bowl picking from a pool of teams such as BG, Ball State and Toledo, as well as teams like Ohio or Buffalo possibly still in the mix at 6-6. Another thing to keep in mind is, as of today, the loser of the MAC Championship game could actually not be bowl eligible if that team were .500 going in and lose which could open one of the already mentioned spot.

So from my standpoint, I’m pulling for Toledo on Tuesday, Akron on Wednesday, and BG every day of the week.
GO BG!!!

What he said. No freakin way am I rooting for tsun tonight. I would much rather see Ball State win tonight because 1) BSU is the better team and 2) it's tsun. Nuff said. The only way I would root for tsun is if it would benefit BG directly. :-D

Win out and we're going bowling...MAC title game or not. THAT is the main focus.

Huh? 75% of Toledoans where OSU or UM gear and you have grown up with UT and their colors your whole life? As a UT fan I wish I lived in that bizarro world you lived in.

You bring up some valid points. I have concerns Ball State could be picked if it comes down to a "beauty contest". The bowls may favor The Nate Davis, Donte Love connection because of the fireworks that tandem bring. Ball State's last game is against NIU and they are brutal.

How do you root for Toledo?? I can't either. BG wins out, they are 8-4. Ball State wins out they are 7-5. The differnce in record should be enough for BG.

It'll be extremely interesting to see how things do shape up if BSU or UT finish 7-5 with BG. I think a lot will come down to OOC teams, as well as home attendance. All 3 played a Big Ten school, BG and BSU played WKU while UT got Liberty. BG beat Minnesota and gave MSU a good game, but those games look less impressive after every week. BSU gave the Huskers all they wanted but they're in a down year, and also gave Indiana and Illinois good games, which may tilt the scale in their direction. UT doesn't have any OOC impressive wins, but did lose to Purdue and #3 Kansas.

Like Freak said, we should just focus on finishing 8-4 and putting all doubt to rest...but if BG ties one of them in record, it'll be a long discussion for the bowl committees on who to take.

They didn't just lose to KU, they got MANHANDLED by KU. I still have a hard time believing that KU is that great, but that game against UT was just hard to watch if you're a Toledo fan.

Well it was mostly in high school. Everyone would take a tour of UT and then they would come back with UT Vomit on them.

That is why I think BG would actually be better served here with a Toledo win. Yeah, yeah, I hate Toledo too, but we have a chance to beat Toledo in two weeks, but we'll never see Ball State.

I'd prefer we just win out and take our 8-win season. I've never been a fan of letting another team's losses help us. If we can't get the job done, we shouldn't hope someone else can do it for us.

Let's take Buffalo before worrying about anything else.

If Toledo wins, Bowling Green gains full control of its bowl destiny. If Toledo wins tonight, and Bowling Green wins out, Bowling Green is in a bowl game. It's that simple.

Right now, Bowling Green is not in control of it's destiny.

If Ball State wins, that hurts BG. It is highly unlikely the Cards would lose their final game to Northern Illinois.

That would leave us looking for Miami to slip up. If Miami doesn't, that means a beauty contest between Ball State and Bowling Green for the MAC's third bowl game.

I know rooting for Toledo is like kissing your brother. But I think it's better for the Falcons, just this once.

That was my thinking too which I why I was hoping for a Toledo win. This game puts Ball State in good position now and I don't see the Cardinals losing to Northern Illinois next week. The International Bowl had representatives there tonight in Munice and this was a great way for them to showcase their team. BG pretty much needs to win out to have a shot at a bowl.
GO BG!!!
