Bowl Money
Bowl Money
Ok, the big reason that getting to a bowl is so huge: MONEY.
Does anyone know what the payout for a team is in:
1) Motor City
2) GMAC Bowl
3) Silicon Valley Bowl
I only ask to see what kind of money the MAC expects this year.

Re: Bowl Money
Not huge. The cost of flying the team and band and what not to California and then putting them up in a place to stay will eat up a lot of that money.BGDrew wrote:Ok, the big reason that getting to a bowl is so huge: MONEY.
Some of that money may also be needed to guarantee sales of a certain number of tickets, many of which we won't be able to sell considering the location of the bowl.
I wouldn't expect any net profit from a Silicon Valley bowl trip. To give you an idea, Marshall claims to have lost money on Motor City Bowl trips -- even though they didn't need to figure out air fare and even though they presumably sold quite a few tickets.
If a net profit is worked out, I assume it would be forwarded to the MAC for distribution to league teams through revenue sharing.
It could be split into 14 shares, with the league office getting one, BGSU getting two and every other league team getting one. I seem to remember hearing that this is how the MAC splits NCAA tournament revenue.
I doubt Paul Krebs will lie awake nights, waiting for the check.

However it is split...
We must have made out well last year, because it was obviouse some money got spent on our program...ala, new scoreboard, new uniforms, etc. The only added expense for a trip to SVC would be flight cost vs. bus ride. That can't cost much more than flying to OK.
Re: Bowl Money
That's cause they had to pay the "janitors" when they got back to Huntington. $25/hour can eat up a budget really quick!Schadenfreude wrote: To give you an idea, Marshall claims to have lost money on Motor City Bowl trips -- even though they didn't need to figure out air fare and even though they presumably sold quite a few tickets.
Re: Bowl Money
For the bowls we're looking at, this is quite wrong. The payout, as mentioned above is NOT huge. On top of that I'm pretty sure that the MAC uses the same payout structure as the Big10. The team that goes to the bowl gets to cover expenses. The rest of the money is evenly split by the conference members equally. In the end no MAC team is making much for playing in a bowl game.BGDrew wrote:Ok, the big reason that getting to a bowl is so huge: MONEY.
.
The real value of the bowl game for a team like BG?
EXTRA PRACTICES. Bowl teams get something like 2-3 weeks of extra practices that non-bowl teams are not eligible for. You cannot underestimate the value this has for the team the following season. I think its evidenced by how well our RS SO QB has played this year. I would bet that Omar took > 50% of the snaps in pre-bowl practices last year.

When they interviewed the AD from Utah, he stated that the profits are not evenly distributed for their conference. The equation is one in which the team that competed gets a larger portion and then the rest is split equally amongst the remaining teams. They have always used that formula in the past and will use that same formula with the HUGE payout they get this year.
Each Conference has their own policies in this situation. I thought the MAC divided it equally. It doesn't really matter. Even if BG got ALL the money it wouldn't be that much once they deducted the cost of the trip...it certainly won't be after dividing it up, even if they do so in a lopsided manner.BelieveNBG wrote:The rest of the money is evenly split by the conference members equally. Again, I thought this was how the MAC split NCAA tournament money, and it seems like bowl money ought to work on the same principle (as part of league revenue sharing).BGDrew wrote:The way I understood, if a bowl covers expenses, it pays the school a certain percentage then the coference gets a smaller percentage.
Assuming a 12-team MAC, I believe the money left once expenses are covered would be split into 14 or 15 shares, allocated this way:
1. One or two shares for the league office.
2. Two shares for the school that brought in the money.
3. One share each for every other MAC school.
Bottom line: Expenses will chew up most of this money. It isn't worth the time we will all devote to dissecting it.
