The Spread Offense

Is it me or is every other big school jumping on the spread "O" which BG ran so well back in the Meyers days! The Mizzou game actually mentioned it, but failed to say anything about BG. If I remember correctly, didn't we beat Mizzou a while back? WV runs it to almost perfection! We need a speed QB and a speed RB with a touch of great blocking and an awesome TE...We'd smash any of the big boys!

Seems to be. The face of college football is changing and teams like Michigan have been left in the dust. UM needs a coach that can bring them in to 21st century football. I would say that what we've tried to run especially early on this season was a pass heavy offense much like Texas Tech or Hawaii's and not really a true spread. We run closer to a true spread when Glaud comes in at QB . It'll be interesting next year to see if Glaud really challenges for the starting job as well as Nate Brown who both have the athleticism for the spread O.

I recall crushing Mizzou at The Doyt just a few years ago with Pinkel coming back to NW Ohio with his stud QB. Smith I believe.

An awesome TE? Not to start a big stink but I believe we moved one of those to the defensive line this year. I loved how Sean would run routes over the middle and rumble over people.

Now that LSU is guarenteed to not win the National Championship, I think you'll see that coach at UM next year...Hope Tressell is starting to prepare to face the spread offense every third Saturday in November if he wants to continue to dominate the rivalry.

I agree that Miles will be at the Big House next year, however don't look for an effective spread offense real soon, not with Mallett at the controls. He is after all, a pure, drop back, pro style Q-back.

Assuming he gets the job, Les Miles isn't going to let Carr's leftovers dictate what offense he runs....

Assuming he gets the job, Les Miles will have to recruit AND START a true freshman and then trust him to run one of the most intricate, complex offenses known to mankind. Tough chore for anyone, save Mr. Tebow, hence my earlier "real soon" comment.

If it meant running his offense or not running his offense, Miles would start a true freshman over Mallett in a minute. Mallett isn't exactly a veteran and you have to assume that the freshman...or JUCO...in question would have some familiariy with that style of offense from their prep days so they'd actually be further ahead than Mallett in some aspects.

I just can't see a guy like Miles walking into a high profile, high pressure gig like the Michigan job so he can tailor his offense to the guys Carr left behind.

Flip, let's just agree to agree.

Miles will run his offense, with his players, but the effectiveness of his system won't be real effective, real soon.

There is no National Championship, its the BCS system champion.
who cares about any team in MI anyway...even if they do hire Bill Cowher.

The spread offense is really not that complex. That's why high school teams across the country are running it as well as nearly every collegiate team. It's a relatively simple scheme that spreads the defense, and allows an athlete at QB to make plays.

Actually, there was one mention of Bowling Green and the spread, but it was erroneous. They said that when Pinkel went to install the spread, one of the first people he called was Urban Meyer because they knew each other well from their time in the MAC together (said like they were slumming it). My dad and I were just looking at each other and both said bullshit at the same time. It would have been hard for that to be the case since Pinkel left after the 2000 season and Meyer started the 2001 season.

One thing interesting about Michigan's recruiting in recent years - they had been recruiting a lot of receivers, especially quicker ones suited for a spread offense. I think Ryan Mallet has experience in running the spread. Their big running back recruit, Sam McGuffie, is completely opposite of Mike Hart and would fit well in the spread. My older brother is a Michigan alum and follows their every step and had said that he thought Lloyd Carr was putting the pieces in place to run the spread offense next year with Mallet. With him retired now, it would be really easy for the new coach to put together a spread offense. Now wouldn't that shock some Michigan alums??

why the hell would les miles leave a powerhouse in lsu and play in the sec and move to the crappy ol big 10??? who cares if he has ties with michigan, urban had ties with notre dame and he was smart and didnt go there.
