Cussing out the officals, the opponets is part of hockey always has been and always will be. It is part of the passion for the game. I agree that Michigan's penalty chant is extreme as they use every possible vulger word...but come on people THIS IS A GAME WHERE PLAYERS HOOK, SLASH, CHECK, and at other levels FIGHT. To sit back sip tea and slow clap is an insult to the game.[/i]
I agree entirely with your sentiment about hockey being a sport of emotion, and I am one of the rowdiest fans you'll see at a game. Also, I am not personally offended by vulgarity, as words are only words and will never hurt anyone. I merely object to the blatant copying of other schools' chants and the ADDITION of vulgarity to the chants associated with Falcon hockey. "They still suck" was added to "that's debatable" sometime in the late 90's, and I feel that it took some of the cleverness away from a fantastic crowd chant. Also, I think it made participating in the chants less appealing to parents and community members who attended games, thus reducing the number of people participating in the heckling. Any cheer, chant, or heckle is far more effective when performed by the entire crowd than when just performed by the students.

To quote the late Isaac Asimov: "... humor is more effective when the ribaldry is only hinted at. The listener fills in the lacunae in his mind according to his own tastes." Why not let the visiting players think about the implications of "that's debatable" and come to their own conclusions about what we think of their hockey skills. While they're busy pondering that, our Falcons can grab the puck and score a couple of goals!

I'm not someone you have to discuss tradition with. Like basketball is Grant's favorite sport here at BG, hockey is mine. I love this team including the opportunity to work with them. I see no reason that we need to call someone a donkey when they get a penalty. In my opinion a good cheer is one that gets your guys going, not piss off the other team. Again, I think if the worst we say is jackass, then we're already better than schools like Michigan and Nebraska-Omaha who's fans have a history of being downright vulgar at times.

Here's all I ask:
- Keep the swearing in the student section. If you're sitting next to a family there's no reason to be speaking like that.
- Be loud, get into the game, but remember it's just a game. Once that final buzzer hits respect the athletes for the performance they just gave. The players can hear everything at our barn.

I sorta agree with you drew...but jackass and that cheer are ok in my book as far as swearing goes thats not bad...barely even crosses the line if at all.

i also think the students right behind the visitors box should do what ever they can to get in the heads of the opposition's. Not saying you should call them Fing loosers...jut belittle the hell out of them and their coaches, be disruptive, make home ice hell for them.

As far as I can remember, "seeya, bye-bye, jackass" started at BG in the mid to late 90's. What I remember before that was the crowd pointing at the guilty player and yelling "you, you, you, you, you, you!!!" Even the "who's he, nobody!" chant has been around a heck of a lot longer than the "seeya."

Apparently, it does. For years it was just "Ahhhhhhhhhh....SEE YA!" (which admittedly seems to be a common chant) then 'overnight' students tacked on "bye-bye...jackass" and now it's "tradition"...

I miss the early/mid 90's at the Ice Arena, and even then I think I missed the REALLY fun times. *sigh*

Totally off topic, Drew's factorizer said: Drew is better than you at breathing.

I found this extremely amusing, especially since I just got over a case of bronchitis.

Something that is even further amusing is that last year during my surgery the doctor's noted how good my oxygen levels were at all times. I'm pretty much the single most perfect specimen the whole wide Earth has seen.

I guess my view on the whole tradition thing is that just about anything can become a tradition. I wish we didn't have to go to swearing, but it's not something that's easily curbed short of throwing out anyone who swears. If this were the case, I wouldn't make it through the "figure skating exhibition."

Tradition at BG? This just in...BG is coming up with another hockey sweater it will have a falcon on it filled in of corse. This will be in the left corner. It will have Bowling Green written diagonally much like the old NY Rangers unis. On the right side it will have the old falcon. Damn... untill our own jerseys show some signs of tradition why must we talk of chants. What are we the Vancouver Canucks. We have a new jersey every season and have old timers talking about how good Petri Skriko was and how their farts smelt great back then. The youngsters telling them to deal with reality. No different than here at BG.
Dave Ellett is a hero. A Bowling Green Falcon and a Former Jet and Maple Leaf. What more can a Winnipegger ask for.

I suppose I would be offended if I knew what any of that meant.

Yes, traditions change. Hell, I CHANGED some of them when I was in school (not hockey, that was hallow ground.)

Vulgarity is never in vogue. Never. I curse like a motherf***er in private, so don't call me prudish. I don't cuss at sporting event and definitely don't direct any vulgarity to players. Why? It shows zero imagination and, further, zero class - which is ultimately what it boils down to.

And yes, there should be certain amount of class in hockey - even when you want some blood on the ice.

Here is you: "the goalie sucks!"
Here is me: "Cheer up, goalie, at least Madonna still has a bigger 5 hole!"

Both make a point. Mine is funny: Yours is vulgar.

Final example and I'll let you go about your way. I was at the NIU bball game at Anderson a couple of years back. One of the NIU player's name was "Smallwood." I said (not quietly), "Smallwood!? Is that a name or a description?" It was a humorous litle double entendre which endeared itself to young and old......and my four year old was unharmed.

As much as I tend to dislike to do it, I'll give you a big, bold "+1" on this one.

I'll admit I've been guilty of the profanity thing at times, and when I first started going to hockey (and football) games, I was probably one of the worst in the student section.

That all changed once I came on here and learned about the tradition and pride that this University's hockey team and fans used to have in the 'glory days'. The more I learn, the more I regret the way I was and the more I try to change the perspective of people I know who sit in the student section.

I'd much rather have BG be known for being the most clever, creative fans in the CCHA than simply being the loudest, most vulgar fans around. Players and refs hear vulgarity everywhere. They may as well be immune to it. It doesn't help.

Similar to your "5 Hole" example, RUIT, I made a sign last season after a particularly poorly called game by Wilkins which read "WILKINS - HOW MUCH FOR A HAPPY ENDING?" Yeah, it's a little crude, but not in a way that is immediately harmful or offensive to families or children, and you can bet your ass he (and everyone else) noticed. One of the refs laughed so hard he almost fell over, and even the opposing players were laughing. This is even before the puck was dropped. I was in their heads and the game hadn't even started yet.

Humor is infinitely more effective and definitely more respectable.

Just my 2 (or more) cents.

While I ere on the side of keeping it clean in family (and some other) settings, the "O'niel has the clap *clap clap* " cheer is one of my favorite moments in the ice arena.
Yeah right girl!

While we're on the topic, anyone remember the end of victorious game Mickey Mouse song? "M-I-C, See ya real soon, K-E-Y, Why? Because we BEAT YOU!!!, M-O-U-S-E". Classic stuff. Section A use to be THE enternainment section in the 80's.
