If they spread Hold 'em, and you're skilled, I'd say this is definitely a viable way to pay for the trip.bgsufalcon24 wrote:I wouldn't advocate "casino action to pay for the trip" or anything for that matter. In the typical casino playing $1/2 NL you should be able to make $110 in no time. Play well and don't suffer any terrible beats you should be okay in a couple hours; catch a big hand and it could be in a couple minutes. Of course it's still gambling, so you could conceivably lose, but I find that I win about 75% of the time in casinos...the players are sooo bad.

Is M. Neil Browne still teaching economics at BG? He could count cards. He was banned from certain casinos in Vegas.
Hmm...no clue, never took any economics classes.tiznow wrote:

That's a pretty valuable skill. I love winning in poker, but if I were skilled enough to beat the casinos at their own game, I'd love to be able to do it. The only downside is, as you mentioned, if you get recognized as somebody who can count cards they're likely to ban you. It's not against the rules to count cards, but the casinos have the right to ban anyone they want.
After my folks got married, they went on several cruises. My dad's agenda was always the same - spend the first 24 hours in the ship's casino and make enough money to pay for the trip and any extras. He never failed. Never. Failed.
I remember playing pinochle with him and it would drive you nuts. Everyone would have five cards left. He look at you and say, "OK, play that 10 of hearts." You'd give him a blank stare and he'd then proceed to tell you what everyone had in their hands. It was uncanny and, frankly, unnerving.
Sadly, it's one of many skills he never passed along to me.

I know the feeling. Whenever we play euchre my dad is always calling out everyone's cards before they are played. I'm just fortunate that the last couple of games we were partners.1987alum wrote:I remember playing pinochle with him and it would drive you nuts. Everyone would have five cards left. Yes, he is most definitely. I was on the edu site. He still is at BG. The second class of the semester, he asked me a question and I wasn't paying attention. He made me feel like a complete jerk, which i deserved. For the whole 1.5 hours, he kept asking me questions and referring back to when I wasn't paying attention. Other students came up to me afterwards to offer their sympathy. He really tore me a new one.Schadenfreude wrote:No idea, but I believe it. That dude was brilliant.tiznow wrote:Is M. I was completely focused in that class the rest of the time.

I don't remember who, but someone was telling me about him. He seems like an interesting (not to mention freaking brilliant) guy. If I wasn't terrified of being ridiculed in front of the class, I might sign up to take a class with him.

I am not sure if he still does this, but you signed a list on the first day of class if you want to be called on. If you don't sign the list, he will not call on you. If you sign the list you get extra points, but he will call on you.Peregrinner wrote:I don't remember who, but someone was telling me about him. FF, What are you using to find out that rate? Everything I checked from either Cleve. OR Columbus to Mobile area, Pensacola etc. is around $320. Would be worth the drive to Columbus if I could get the rates you're quoting.freefalcon wrote:Fly Skybus out of Columbus, Ohio on 1/2/08 to Biloxi, MS and back to Columbus, Oh on 01/07/08 for $110.00 not bad.

I think it was Amarillo Slim who said there's a pigeon sitting at every table and if you can't figure out who it is after 10 minutes get up and leave because chances are its you.hammb wrote:If they spread Hold 'em, and you're skilled, I'd say this is definitely a viable way to pay for the trip.bgsufalcon24 wrote:I wouldn't advocate "casino action to pay for the trip" or anything for that matter.
