TIME TO SECOND GUESS
I hate to second guess.. my brother who coaches Falcon Baseball would kill me for second guessing any coach, but hey, he's not here.
Why on earth did we kick the first onside kick.
We saw that our defense was able to hold them on three consecutive downs after that kick.. the only problem was that UT was in their own territory and we gave them the luxury of going for it on fourth.
This is just one example of many where we got out coached. I'll stop short of saying that Fatstutz out coached us, but his coordinators sure did

The first onside kick was the absolute right call! Do you really have faith that our defense could have stop them no matter where they had the ball? If they run the kick back to the 25, thats only about 25 yards of field position that we gave up trying the onside kick. Turns out to be an even better call because we got to try another kick later. Two onside chances in under 2 minutes. That's abouth the best we could of hoped for.
Amen. It was stupid to on-side kick with over three minutes to go and having all three timeouts. As for our coordinators, well, I better stop talking before I say too much about how pathetic they were in the second half.

The onside kick was about the only thing our staff did that I agreed with in the entire second half. Our defense wasn't even slowing them down. You had to try for the onside there. Even if you give up another TD, as you saw, the game is not over, you will get another shot at a second onsides kick.
In a game with little to no defense, that onside kick is the right call, IMO.

I understand your points on the on-side kick. But there is also the motivational side. By on-side kicking there, you just told the defense "You suck and I don't think you could stop a fifth grade CYO team right now so the only way we get the ball back with a chance to tie is to recover an on-side kick". Which was probably correct, but football is an emotional game. Sometimes if you show some faith and show some confidence in a unit that is down, they will rise to the challenge.

Warthog, normally I'd agree with you 100% and always kick it deep in that situation, but last night it just didn't seem like the right call. I just don't think we could've stopped them. I agree with the emotional aspect of football, but it was apparent that we did something to lose that part of the game in the lockerroom at halftime and it wasn't coming back any time soon no matter what.
Well, I think you convincdd me the on-side kick was ok. But I think Flipper hit it on the head, our defense came out in the second half and didn't attack like in the first half. That set the done for the second half . UT saw that and just stepped on our throats and woulnd't let up.

ARE YOU JOKING!!!! We went out there and stopped them on three straight plays. They wouldn't have had different playcalling from their own 30! We should have kicked it deep and held them, at least if they got 1 first down, we could have stopped them still...this gave us no chance. The fact that he ran that all the way in only gave us time to score again for fun.Rollo83 wrote:The first onside kick was the absolute right call!
