Purdue hockey player dies in auto accident
Seven teammates in the van also hurt, but injuries not life-threatening.

LAFAYETTE -- A Purdue University freshman died when the van carrying his ice hockey club team slid and rolled over Saturday near the Tippecanoe-Montgomery county line.
Tippecanoe County deputy coroner J. Steve Kohne identified the dead student as Andrew T. Jackson, 18, from Chanhassen, Minn.
Jackson has played hockey "since he was a kid," said Purdue coach Cameron Estes, who was at the hospital with the injured players Saturday night. "He and his folks lived and breathed hockey. He was excited to be a student at Purdue."
The crash -- one of dozens reported Saturday in central Indiana due to slick roads caused by freezing rain, sleet and low temperatures -- also injured seven of his teammates, though their injuries were not believed to be life-threatening.
University spokeswoman Jeanne Norberg said the club was driving to Danville, Ill., when the van rolled over about 3:45 p.m. on Indiana 25, between Odell and Wingate.
The 20 club members, two coaches and a manager were headed to play a 5 p.m. game against Holy Cross College of South Bend, she said.
The Indiana Department of Natural Resources is investigating the wreck.
Estes said three vehicles left campus around 3:30 p.m. for the game at the David S. Palmer Arena -- where the team also practices. The vehicle he was in came upon the crash a few minutes after it occurred.
He said the van was on its side about 10 feet from the roadway.
The other injured hockey players were taken to Home Hospital for treatment.
Trooper Scott Keegan of the Indiana State Police said law enforcement handled dozens of vehicle slide-offs, some rollovers and several property damage wrecks because of the slick roads.
Interstate 65 had to be shut down for about an hour when two semitrailers slid into each other Saturday afternoon.
"It was a solid sheet of ice," Keegan said. "With the traffic not moving, the salt was not doing any good. Vehicles were sliding even as traffic was stopped."
Seven teammates in the van also hurt, but injuries not life-threatening.

"Regarding BGSU, I would think their biggest strength is that they never give up, They never slow down and they battle hard even after the other team scores. We have to be on our game and never, ever take the foot off the gas for a second."

"BG was relentless. It's like they know that a good first pass on the breakout from a defenseman will almost always result in an odd-man rush against them - but they go in anyway and dare you to make that pass. All three of their goals were just grit and effort. That's a team any fan can be proud to support...they give all they've got."

Education our Challenge, Excellence our goal. (look it up)
That is a sad story. That section of I-65 constantly has accidents whether the weather is good or bad. In fact two Greyhound buses crashed there today injuring 21.MACMAN wrote:Purdue hockey player dies in auto accident
