I have been silent on this issue for the most part as well. Bleeding Orange and I have talked a bit about and extension but that is about all. I don't want to see anything signed until AFTER the bowl game because I feel has performance at that game should be a part of the evaluation. If I am Greg Christopher here is what I would tell Greg Brandon.

Channeling Greg Christopher:

"You've got a great first name, I like that. A winning record is important here at BGSU and at 8-4 you have accomplished that. However, the 1-3 record in October needs to be taken into account. Regardless of what happens in Mobile I want to give you a 1 year extension with a bump in pay. If we come out and play a competitive game against Tulsa, look like the November 2007 Falcons but fall short I would keep the extension at 1 year. If we come out and play so-so and pull out a victory the extension stands at 1 years. Now if we come out and put up a convincing win on the board then I would give a 2 year extension. That keeps you here through the 2010 season. Extensions are good for the consistency of the program but know that if we have another stretch like October the money to buy out the remaining part of your contract is there and I will not hesitate to spend it.

I fell he has earned an extension but nothing more than 2 years with the knowledge that the buy out money is in place.

I'd give him an extension. Probably not more than an additional two years, but he's earned an extension in my mind by getting the team to rebound to 8-4. He deserves a shot at competing for a MAC title with his players. I would let him know that continuing to fail in big games like the Miami game will not be acceptable going forward, but he has done enough to earn a shot at winning the MAC with his guys.

What's more, looking at our coaches salaries I'm not convinced we'll ever find a much better coach at our budget.

I would love to see the guy go to Duke, Michigan, Northern Illinois or any place else. No, It's not because I don't love him, it's all about his lack of pay. Any coach that can take BG to 8-4 deserves a raise in pay. One good year does not deserve an extra year. We give him an extra 50k next year for the job he did this year. If he repeats the results, then that extra pay should go with a new contract of 3 years with incentives. However, to just give the guy 3-5 more years, based upon an 8-4 year against teams that really sucked this year would be foolish. Let him go to those other schools who would give him both if he is not happy here.

Sure sucked in the second half against us. He finally figured out that even our defense can stop a direct snap to the QB over and over, mixed it up and thumped us. Defensive adjustments were pretty good, too.

I am for the extension cuz I still like his all-time agianst us but here's a guy who's got you to , like, three bowls in 5 or 6 years? How could he NOT deserve an extension? Best record in the MAC? I think he was incredibly dumb about his kicking situation- he recruited them and if they weere bad or problem men, he should have taken responsibility for that, but I assure you BG doesn't care if he's a jer- he's supposed to win games and this year he did.

As far as Brandon not "relating to the players well" I seem to recall when Urban left for Utah that GB was going with him. It seems to me that it was the players that voted or recommended to Krebs that they would really like GB to become the head coach. I think he is a players coach.

Flipper wrote:WTF? Of course you extend his contract...pointing at some arbitrary juncture within a 12 game season when the team was at a low point as a rationale for letting him twist in the wind next season is no more valid than pointing to the euphoria of the aftermath of the Minnesota game as a reason to extend him.

You need to look at the season as a whole...we went 8-4 and finished in a three way tie for the divisional crown and we're going to a bowl game. we also pounded Toledo into dust. I think that's a pretty damn good season and worthy of an added couple of years to the man's contrat.

If you don't extend him you hurt a hell of a lot more than just recruiting...you force the team to go into the season with a cloud of uncertainty hanging over them. Instead of focusing on the MAC title and whuppin' Toledo again they'd be wondering if their coach would be here next week...next year..next month...why put them through that.

Assistant coaches have to look out for their future's, do you think they're going to be willing to chance working under a lame duck or are they more likely to haul ass out of here at the first opportunity? Do you want a repeat of last year when we cycled through an entire roster of coaches?

Let's also consider the impact such a move would have on the athletic department's reputation and standing. Do you really want the University to get a reputation as an institution that does not reward achievement? Do you think we'd be likely to attract talented coaches down the line if we let a winning coach twist in the wind as a lame duck?

You continue to advance this idiotic notion that attendance is somehow Gregg Brandon's problem to fix...I really do not understand what you are thinking here...blame the marketing folks, blame the AD's past and present for our lousy schedule's , blame the Universtiy for not allocating enough $$ to advertising...but the HC? He's not "rallying the community"? What exactly do you propose he do, walk up and down Main street carrying a bell and a sign that says "game this weekend"?

So far as Ellis and Rojas go...yep, I was not happy to see the coach taking shots at kid's who left. As the season wore on...past the half way point or so, I don't recall hearing him do that very often...if at all. I tend to think that this is a dead issue.

I've got to be honest with you, the notion that we'd let a HC with a winning record go into a lame duck season without offering him an extension is just about the dumbest idea I've heard advanced on this board...no offense..
Tiny minds insult when there is the absence of logic. The attendance is and should be one of Gregg Brandons priorities. It was a priority of Urban Meyer, it should be a priority of Gregg Brandon. That is my OPINION. 1987 pointed out the simplicity of my statement prior and I agreed with him. It is not Gregg Brandons fault but it is a part of Gregg Brandons responsibilty to attempt to fix.

As far as the extension. I am excited by our success. I think you extraordinarily overstate the affect of a lame duck season on the players and the program. If we allowed a team like temple to beat us and a team like Miami last year as well and we extend that coach I think we show we reward mediocrity if at the moment that coach may allow us to superficially (we beat teams with a winning percentage of 34%) say we were successful. You build a house on sand, you get what you deserve. You say the players would be wondering if there coach would be gone. What if the players are hoping there coach would be gone?

Also, just because he stopped blaming things on Rojas and Ellis by mid-season does that make it right? And do you think those assistant coaches would have the opportunity to leave after one year in their current positions? I think you are reaching here just to make some sort of aggressive attack at me because those two statements are completely illogical.

I have to be honest with you, you are insulting and for no reason what so ever, we could have an adult conversation but you move it into the juvenile. You are better than that, even if it is just because you are above the age of 30 and should no better. You have been given more power here then you know how to respectfully use.

2 points here

1) I agree with your statement about the salary and what we get for it, We pay little and we get a lot for it in terms of wins.
2) Improvement is a measurement you must look at in the entire scope of his coaching career. He was the awful coach in 2006 that made our special teams silly and had us lose to Temple. Improving from something you yourself caused to be so horrible should be measured as so. When someone like Urban comes in and turns around a program that is completely different.

In terms of this scenario I think his win total this season is a very hollow measurement.

how in the world can anyone argue against an extension? gregg brandon has now led the falcons to three bowl games in five years as head coach. maybe you can argue the first two years were with urban's players, but still, he was able to validate it this year with a bowl berth with "his" players.

we should be on here arguing over the escape and buyout clauses in this extension, not whether or not brandon deserves it. we should be arguing over what his place in history should be, and not whether or not he should be history.

does coach brandon have his flaws? yes, he does. has he lead this team to one of its greatest five year stretches of football and earned an extension? you bet your AZZ.

That's how I remember it as well. I think J5 told the powers-that-be that that's who they wanted as their coach. GB has done a good job. We can nit-pick and complain all we want. IMO, we have the right person for the job.

Globetrotter...I said your statements in the context of this conversation were idiotic and dumb and did not refer to YOU in those terms. You're being a tad senistive and a bit melodramatic.

You cannot wipe away the impact playing under a lame duck coach would have on the program by simply dissmissing the statement...you offer no logical arguments to back that statement...I offered at least three clear and concisie arguments explaining why this would be considered a foolish idea.

You're also arguing the attendance issue on two different tracks...you've laid the attendance issue squarely at Brandon's feet on at least two occasions. When called on this foolishness you then backtrack and say he should be a part of the solution or he should work to fix the problem...please enlighten us with your ideas on what steps Gregg Brandon could take to improve attendance that he hasn't already taken...you cannot offer a specific criticism and then attempt to hide behind meaningless rhetroic to support your argument...be specific.

So far as the strength of scehdule goes...you play the teams you play. Since you brought up Urban Meyer before, I'd like to point out that Urban Meyer won 17 games in two years here. He turned down an extension here to coach Utah and he's considered a coaching deity. ONE of those 17 wins came against a team that finished the year above .500 (another came agint a team that finished .500 on the money).

Brandon has earned an extension and he is going to continue to be the coach of this team...I suggest you begin sifting through the list of NFL assistants with BGSU ties so you can be ready with a list of candidates fir the next coaching search. I have a feeling that if next year's team plays to it's potential we'll be needing to replace another coach who's moved on to greener ($$) pastures.
It's not the fall that hurts...it's when you hit the ground.
