Gee, what could possibly go wrong?

Oh I really need to be careful down there...I simply cannot afford to call Mrs. Freak back home and explain why I need a grand to get outta jail. If there are shuttles that go from the hotels near I 65, I would much rather be driven downtown and back and leave the rental car at the RR Inn.
DD,
30+ days? LOL. Where is TG with his countdown clock?????
Dang...why do I get the feeling this is going to be an absolute BLAST??

I actually just thought of that today when I saw the Minny game clock counting backwards from 94.... *laugh* Maybe I'll hammer something out later if I get a chance.
As for making the trip, I'd REALLY like to make it happen, but with work and cashflow issues, I don't know that it can.

I'll be in attendance!!! Flying down Saturday (had to get 1 hockey game in that weekend), staying at the Ashbury Hotel & Suites (hope it'll be okay!).
Question - do we need a car?
Looking forward to the fun! Does anybody know how they are determining where the seats will be? I think we are getting ours on Friday (should we get them sooner?).

A slight change of plans for me, on the advice of MobileBama. My folks and I will be staying at the Laquinta hotel now. They got me the room for Christmas so that will free up some more spending money. They will be in town Friday night but I will still be flying into Pensacola early Sat AM.
FlagCity,
I rented a car from Hertz to get to Mobile from Pensacola. I should be able to play taxi to anyone that may need a lift to the parade or game. BTW, Class of 61 and his lovely wife Joyce are staying at the Ashbury.

That's where my Expedia junket landed me and logan as well. Will have car as well.
Brick Pit slightly to the Northwest of our hotel. Saw where Pat's Bar is...so that makes for an excellent Pre-parade meet and greet.
In to Hotel about 3 on Saturday, Pats and parade between 5-5:30. Brick Pit pre-game lunch on Sunday, Dayon's tailgate, team bus drop off at about 5:00....ruining Tulsa's season finish thereafter.
There is no other way to finish a season other than yelling at the top of your lungs among BG's players holding the Peace Pipe aloft!
My plan is to stop in Nashviile Thursday on the way down for hot licks and Jack's bar-b-q.Then highball into Mobile Friday evening.
My questions for you who have been there before: it appears that unlike some other cities, Mobile has their airport close to downtown. Is this true? I don't like staying by airports generally, but if it's only 4 miles from downtown, that's not bad at all. I was surprised to see a lot of hotels refer to themselves as "downtown/airport"
AND, is Mobile a cab town? Meaning can a drunk guy (or even a sober guy) get a cab in 15 minutes or so or are they scarce and the bartender stares at you blankly when you request one.

GO BG!
The hotel is NOT near downtown. THe airport itself is very similar to Toledo Express and the location is a urban-sprawled drive from downtown with every conceivable fast food joint mixed in amongst stoplights and strip malls.
Here is how mapquest has you drive from a downtown motel (parade area) to the airport: http://tinyurl.com/2vtebu
My suggestion is to stay closer to downtown than the airport. There is more stuff to do downtown on Friday and of course Saturday night (parade etc.) to which you will want to be walking distance by staying in a downtown hotel. Last time we stayed on a budget and stayed at an interstate/airport hotel and while it was ok we would have preferred staying downtown so this year we are staying downtown.
As to cabs- I don't really recall seeing a lot of them.
That's my two cents. . .take it for what it's worth. . .

Mike, It's beginning to look more and more like this broken ankle is going to KILL our travel to Mobile...got an appt. to see the othopedist on MONDAY...hopefully it will just be a cast...will know more tomorrow.
Bad news! I have to have surgery on the ankle this Friday...even though the doctor said I "could" travel by the bowl game "IF" all goes well, it means I'd have to be in a wheelchair, handicapped seating on plane and probably the game etc. Better off staying at home and watching it on TV. I'll take a "hit" on my plane tix, but can cancel the hotel, rental car...will probably wind up donating my game tix to charity. I'll call the ticket office tomorrow.
Education our Challenge, Excellence our goal. (look it up)
After a lot of careful consideration, I've figured out how I can make the trip down. Me and 2 friends will be making the trip down for the game. We're staying at the La Quinta (near I-65) for the pretty big reason that it's cheap ($120 total for 2 nights). We're planning on getting into town sometime around noon on Saturday and taking in the events for the day. It sounds like Pat's is going to be the BG bar Saturday afternoon? I've never been to Mobile so I'm looking forward to the trip and hopefully meeting a few of my fellow board members.
I do have one question that MobileBama may be able to answer. What's the tailgating scene like? Are cops strict about open container and such? Also, is there ample parking at the stadium?
As long as they have a good tailgate area I think it'd be great to have a central meeting place for the A-Z-Z crew.
Would it be possible to have this thread stickied? There's a lot of good information here.

There are official tailgates for both teams, as I remember it. I also remember being okay near my car. But, honestly, I don't know how aggressively police are looking for violations.
You'll have no problem tailgating. Just don't drink out of glass and don't go overboard and you'll have no problems. Try to get to the stadium early so you can get a safe parking spot. Also, tents are ONLY allowed in certain locations inside the lot. Call to make sure.
