One thing though, you gave WMU's Cubit a MAC title instead of a bowl appearance.
Blade Reports Brandon Extension Likely
The athletic director at UNLV was also rolling his eyes after Brandon turned him down, and that's just the one who was made public. He's regularly mentioned as a candidate for a number of positions by people like Tom Dienart of the Sporting News. To think that a MAC coach with his record is at BG only because of a lack of options doesn't pass the smell test. Maybe, and I know this a reach, he actually likes it here and wants to build a program!Warthog wrote:And his short comings are exactly why he was able to move up to Utah and Florida and win a national championship in just 6 years of coaching.JoeFalcon wrote:I'm certainly not going to argue Meyer wasn't a good coach who brought needed change, but his very real shortcomings and failings at BG can't be simply ignored or whitewashed if we're getting into a "Greatest Ever" argument.
Oh by the way, the incredibly great coach Gregg Brandon is still at BG after five years because he isn't good enough to get an offer from a bigger school.
As far as Urban, for the 20 zillionth time, I'm not denying his success, but what he did at Utah and Florida doesn't explain away the NIU, South Florida and Toledo disasters in 2002 here at BG. I'm still waiting for the Meyer worshipers to explain those. Contrary to popular belief, he wasn't perfect and doesn't need or deserve to have his record here hyperbolically inflated because of what he did after he left. His successes can stand on their own merit without the phony myth-making.
+1. 1987alum was also spot on, rendering my above response to Warthog to rehash the same points quite unneccesary.Flipper wrote:Urban changed the culture from an acceptance of mediocrity towards demand for higher standards. Brandon took the program over from there and has finished the actual "gut work" of building a program capable of being in the thick of things from year to year. I don't think we should try to diminish the important work that Meyer did here, but I also don't think we should overlook the work Brandon has done here or (much worse) try to assign credit for it to Meyer.
Meyer has gone on to do some fantastic things, but Brandon has accomplshed things here that his predecessors did not and the foundation of the program (specifically the facilites and the quality of the athletes) is far stronger than it was when he took over.
To put it another way, Meyer took the program out of it's little box, and Brandon has built the frame work for a larger expanse that transcends the limitations of anything the program has been under before.

Right, but these stats are pretty straightforward. Brandon must be judged against his peers and by how much he makes. In that vein, he compares extremely favorably in the MAC. Just because some of us aren't always happy with what we see on the field and in the media room doesn't mean that Brandon isn't doing better than almost every one of his peers.Globetrotter wrote:Statistics can be formed to show anything. 95% of people know that.Dayons_Den wrote:It is interesting to look at it all laid out like that. Some of just have very high standards for what we want BG to be, and what we think it can be.

I don't remember 2002 being a disaster. THIS year was a disaster. But I do recall Meyer having your QB, who was supposed to be pretty good, run the ball into the line about 25 times. Some of the worst playcalling I've seen by a good team in a big game. Especially since the entire MAC knew we were very vulnerable to the long ball. Meyer was young and learning, though. Can't argue that he hasn't grown and is among the elite now. Brandon certainly compares well, record wise.JoeFalcon wrote:[and Toledo disasters in 2002 here at BG. In addition to the statistics above, I would add that Brandon is one of the lowest-paid coaches in all of D-IA football. I would also add that he is fourth all-time in winning percentage at BG and has already matched the number of winning seasons compiled by Denny Stolz and Gary Blackney.Globetrotter wrote:Statistics can be formed to show anything. 95% of people know that.Dayons_Den wrote:It is interesting to look at it all laid out like that. Statistics can, indeed, be molded to show most anything, but these are pretty straightforward.

Did y'all hear about the statistician who drowned in a lake where the average depth was 3'?1987alum wrote:In addition to the statistics above, I would add that Brandon is one of the lowest-paid coaches in all of D-IA football. A: How many did it take the last time?

And who exactly would come in tomorrow and have us win the MAC next year? I'll admit that I've been back and forth on this issue (if anyone says Kerry or flip-flopper = your ass), but Gregg Brandon seems to be a guy who legitimately likes coaching here. I don't get the feeling he's looking for greener pastures (we all know he would have taken that UNLV job if that was the case). We just built him a shiny new playground and will most likely be getting a nice new contract. I'm comfortable calling Brandon our head coach right now. However, next year I only have one expectation for this team and that's to be playing in Detroit in early December. We (on paper) will have the best team in the MAC next year. There is nothing less than a MAC title that should be on our team goals.hammb wrote:Bingo.Jacobs4Heisman wrote: Some of just have very high standards for what we want BG to be, and what we think it can be.
With that said, I'm ok with Brandon. In fact, could it be we have a solid coach with minimal discipline problems who runs an entertaining offense that wants to be here? Add in his 3 bowl games in 5 years (including a bowl in the MAC's best year, 2003), his average of 7.3 wins/season, and how he somehow got a team to 8-4 with 5 new position coaches including new a new OC and DC? This conversation shouldn't even be happening.
