+1, I'm sure they would have loved to have had the Temple game sometime other then Thanksgiving Break, but the date has to work for BOTH schools, meaning the Saturday of Thanksgiving Break must have been the only date that worked for BG and Temple when each were putting their schedules togetherTG1996 wrote:If BG ever wants student interest to grow, they need to get students that want to support BG because it's BG, not because of who they're playing.

+ a billion. My friends and I never worried about who we were playing. We just went to the games. It was a blast whether we won or lost, whether we were playing Toledo or Findlay.TG1996 wrote:If BG ever wants student interest to grow, they need to get students that want to support BG because it's BG, not because of who they're playing.
Students, just get out and support your classmates.

The best way to get them there is through playing teams students would care about and seeing them beat them. The biggest "name" we've beaten in the last 3 years is UC this year who currently has an RPI in the 240's. Students don't care this year unless they start WINNING. They have to beat teams like N. Colorado or Oakland on the road. When a student opens the paper and sees a loss to N. Colorado they say we suck again and tune the bball team out. The best way to remedy this is by getting students to the Arena by beating a good name team IE-Temple, Duquesne at home with students in attendance. From there you can spark an interest in the program. Look around at a basketball game students don't care about a program thats no good. Time to face facts BG better start doing give-a-ways or anything else to get people there.TG1996 wrote:If BG ever wants student interest to grow, they need to get students that want to support BG because it's BG, not because of who they're playing.
You think the womens team had any kind of significant following before they turned the program around and put together an amazing streak in the MAC? Win and they'll come, beat good teams and they'll come. It takes more than just it's my school for students to come to a basketball team.

There are a lot of schools out there that haven't done much in a while, and they still have packed and rowdy student sections every night. A college bastketball game is about the best sports atmosphere on the market. I would go to Pitt and Duquesne games every night down here if it was free and within walking distance. And I could give 2 bleeps about either of those programs. When you're actually emotionally invested in the product on the court? Oh man - it can be an amazing experience.Falcon137 wrote: You think the womens team had any kind of significant following before they turned the program around and put together an amazing streak in the MAC? Maybe I'm just wired wrong. It never mattered to me how good the team was or who we played.

I'm not the best spokesman, because we were pretty darn good when I was in school, but I echo this sentiment. I was at pretty much every game when I was in college, no matter who we played.Jacobs4Heisman wrote: Maybe I'm just wired wrong. It never mattered to me how good the team was or who we played.
I've not missed more than 1 or 2 games a year since I graduated either, and we've been pretty awful during that period. I love watching live college basketball games, and I really don't care who the heck we're playing.
I think there are a lot of college basketball fans on campus. But throughout the 4 classes here now there has been 0 success for the mens basketball team. There is no tradition for the current generation at BG right now. How do you get students excited? There is no one saying hey remember when I was sophomore when we beat ________ at Anderson.hammb wrote:I'm not the best spokesman, because we were pretty darn good when I was in school, but I echo this sentiment. A lot of students now know about the football program. They saw Omar on ESPN before coming they heard upper classmen talking about winning the GMAC Bowl and Omar throwing 41 TD passes. There is always a buzz about football on campus. There is never a "buzz" about basketball on campus especially the mens program. Now you hear about the womens team (I personally don't like womens basketball) but it seems to me students would rather go see them than the men. And that can only be attributed to one thing....winning.
A lot of people on here also went to school or grew up with a winning tradition and were instantly hooked. You saw the glory days here and remember them, current generations don't have anything like that.
I think the "there needs to be giveaways" line is about the funniest I hear repeatedly here. When since 1996 did students start having to be coddled? I fully understand the "winning begets winning" argument, but it doesn't hold much water with me in this situation.
With our arena (and without looking back at results), I bet we're 2-4 wins better a year with students showing up and yelling and cheering regardless of opponent. Even with an average-at-best team, something like that is how things snowball.

+ a billion, I'm the same way, as long as I'm in BG I'll be at the game, no matter who we play. I wish there were more diehard students out there like me and a few of my friends, but Falcon137 is right about one thing, winning cures allJacobs4Heisman wrote:+ a billion.
