Destination Basketball - Book
I've mentioned it in the past on this site, but it bears mentioning now that the holidays are upon us and some of you might be looking for a unique gift for friends or family who are basketball fans.
My friend and infrequent poster here, Andrew Hemminger (BGSU '07) and his buddy Dave Bensch have published their book, Destination Basketball, that chronicles their around the country quest to meet and interview the best coaches in college basketball history. I had the pleasure and honor of being able to help edit the book and have to tell you, it's turned out great!
TG1996 set them up with a great and easy-to-use website where you can order copies of the book via PayPal.
I don't get a cut of the book or anything like that... but Andrew and Dave have made the awesome gesture of donating a portion of the proceeds to the Jimmy V Foundation for Cancer Research. So help them out there if you need a reason.
As far as the book itself goes, it's a great look at the road-tripping skills of a couple of college kids. It's offers some really fantastic insight into some of the greatest minds EVER in college basketball. I mean, come on... they got to sit down with John Wooden in his HOUSE and he read them poetry! GOOD LORD PEOPLE?!?! How amazing is that?!?!?!?
Here's the list of coaches they got to meet and interview:
* Rick Barnes — Texas Longhorns
* John Beilein — Michigan Wolverines
* Jim Boeheim — Syracuse Orange
* Mike Brey — Notre Dame Fighting Irish
* Jim Calhoun — Connecticut Huskies
* John Chaney — Temple Owls
* Denny Crum — Louisville Cardinals
* Jamie Dixon — Pittsburgh Panthers
* Billy Donovan — Florida Gators
* Mark Few — Gonzaga Bulldogs
* Ben Howland — UCLA Bruins
* Tom Izzo — Michigan State Spartans
* Gene Keady — Purdue Boilermakers
* Mike Krzyzewski — Duke Blue Devils
* Thad Matta — Ohio State Buckeyes
* Lute Olson — Arizona Wildcats
* Rick Pitino — Louisville Cardinals
* Skip Prosser — Wake Forest Demon Deacons
* Bo Ryan — Wisconsin Badgers
* Kelvin Sampson — Indiana Hoosiers
* Bill Self — Kansas Jayhawks
* Dean Smith — North Carolina Tar Heels
* Tubby Smith — Minnesota Golden Gophers
* Bruce Weber — Illinois Fighting Illini
* Gary Williams — Maryland Terrapins
* Roy Williams — North Carolina Tar Heels
* John Wooden — UCLA Bruins
* Jay Wright — Villanova Wildcats

No BG appearance
I would think being a graduate of BG, they'd want to make a stop, set up a table in AA and sell a hundred books or so. Just would figure he'd make a return to his former school and sell books on that appeal

They did come back and do a presentation to the Sports Management department and students over homecoming in the BGSU Student Union.cph2133 wrote:I would think being a graduate of BG, they'd want to make a stop, set up a table in AA and sell a hundred books or so. Right now, they're touring and doing book signings with the coaches in the book on their campuses. A thousand books in Chapel Hill, Ann Arbor, Madison, LA, or Lawrence is a little more compelling than a couple dozen in Anderson Arena.

The guys were in Durham yesterday recording the "Basketball and Beyond with Coach K" show that airs on XM channel 144 in about 15 minutes (9AM Eastern on 12/19).
The podcast of the show is available to non-XM subscribers too, but isn't up yet... probably after the show airs. Get it here.

Look for them tomorrow night on ESPN's broadcast of the big Duke/Pitt matchup!

Just watching STO and the guys are on Bruce Drennan's show talking about the book and everything. They were showing some of the pictures of the guys with the coaches and they talked a lot about their experience with Coach Wooden. I want to read this book...definitely.

I'm reading it right now. It's pretty impressive how those guys put that together.
