Ohio State and thoughts on BG

For whoever posted that link about the education program at OSU, it says it was started in 2007. Was the graduate school portion, or the entire program? I enterred college in the summer of 2002, and if the program just opened in 2007, then there wasn't a program when I went to school.
If there was a program, then I guess I mis-spoke. However, then my cousins were mistaken because they said there wasn't a program there, and suprisingly enough, they understood and actually agreed with me on my decision.
I had spoken with my high school principal about schools to attend for education, and he highly suggested BGSU. He said that when he looks at applicaitons, he isn't as interested in GPA as he is what school the student attended. BGSU, Miami, and Kent State students jump to the top, and schools like OSU or Toledo (sorry, but it's true) get moved down. Even my late future father-in-law (in other words, I'm engaged and her father passed away 2 years ago) who was a principal down in Dayton schools said he could tell the difference between BG and UT grads and used the school attended as a criteria. Yes, he had grads from both schools teaching at his school, and of course his opinion was based on a small, isolated sample size so it isn't necessarily true in all cases, but I found it interesting to share.

I've always heard that Ohio State's education college is similar to the ag college down there. It is one of the best in the country for graduate programs and research, but nobody (less than 1%) at the school majors in it at the undergraduate level.
Honestly, I'd trade our education program in a heartbeat to have their engineering, business or arts and sciences departments.

Their engineering school really isn't all that good. My older brother was looking at schools for aerospace engineering and narrowed it to Cincy, OSU, and Michigan. On his visit to OSU, the director of the aerespace department looked at his grades, SAT, and awards and told him that attending OSU would be a real disservice to his potential. He said for a guy as smart as Joe, Michigan would be the best option. And it seems to have been, as he's half a year out of college and is working at Pratt and Whitney making over 60,000 a year. So even the head of the department knows OSU is not that good for engineering.Jamie Gillis wrote:I've always heard that Ohio State's education college is similar to the ag college down there. I have a hard time believing that a prof at a top 20 engineering school would actively derecruit a top student. If he did, he should be fired.
Look, I'm not teketini (or whatever the hell his name is) but I've always been highly amused at the great lengths that the MAC board posters will go to in trying to tear down osu academically.
osu has a great engineering college. It may not be as good as Michigan's, but that is the difference between being the fifth best and the twentieth best in the country. Compared to the other Ohio public universities, osu blows them out of the water--by any criteria one wants to use: national rankings, admissions standards, faculty stature.
For Christ sake, their engineering, business, law and medical schools are all top 35 in the country. USN&WR ranks their arts and science departments in everything from physics to political science to history to a half dozen others top 35 sometimes top 20) in the country. Comparing recent freshman classes, it looks as though (maybe) 20% of our students could get into osu. To constantly talk about how bad osu sucks academically, speaks a lot more to jealousy or bitterness than any reasoned analysis.
It's one thing to take pride in Bowling Green's strong programs. To make ridiculous claims that everything at Ohio State sucks just makes one sound foolish. I know that osu bashing is more art form than hobby among many here, but when it crosses over into absurd claims about how weak osu is academically, it just serves to undercut any legitimate claims about BG that one is trying to make.

osu ed program
I think the confusion on the education program stems from the fact that OSU does not have an undergraduate program (this may have changed in the past few years). The program they had when I was there was for a fifth year after undergrad where you could earn your teaching license and master's degree in four quarters (1 year). It was also quite highly ranked. Not saying it was higher than BG, because who really cares?
I don't care. I am just telling him how it is. He is an idiot and needs to understand that.h2oville rocket wrote:Wow. Tinibikini that was a long, lame defense for somebody who doesn't care what people think. Does masochism run in your family? PM me if you need the definition. Oh, and could you come up with a new word for "lame"-using it so much is lame.
I can't use another word for lame. I have to keep it simple for some on here.

I know OSU has a lot of really good programs. I never once in that post took a knock at anything other than engineering. Just saying an experience that happened that has payed fortunes for Joe's career. Also take into consideration that when Joe turned down OSU, he also turned down a full ride.Jamie Gillis wrote:I have a hard time believing that a prof at a top 20 engineering school would actively derecruit a top student. So I'm not making "ridiculous claims that everything at Ohio State sucks", I'm just relaying one person's experience. If you want to see that prof fired, that's your opinion. I see it as being honest.

Sorry if I was somewhat unclear. I didn't mean to imply that you were the only one knocking Ohio State. It was meant more as a blanket indictment of some general thinking that seems to believe that in order to build BG up, osu must be slammed--even if that slamming flies completely in the face of osu's ranking or reputation.MarkL wrote:I know OSU has a lot of really good programs. As for that prof, the first thing that came to my mind is how I would feel if a BGSU prof was counseling National Merit/32 ACT type of prospective students that they were "too good" for BG and should look elsewhere. I'd be absolutely furious and demand his head. Just because a glaring lack of professionalism was done by an osu prof doesn't mean that I'll excuse it. A faculty member or department chair's job should be to recruit the best and brightest students he can to the university. It's up to a kid, kid's parents and kid's high school counselors to take the job of sorting out the kid's options.
Funny, that is what I thought I was doing...only with a slightly larger vocabulary. But hey, I'm going to help you out, and give you some synonyms for lame and idiot.tekekini wrote:I don't care. I am just telling him how it is. He is an idiot and needs to understand that.
