Falcons lose to IU...

Post by Falconfreak90 »

Didn't see this posted yet and thought I'd drop some thoughts. Watching the game on the BTN, BG was in control until about 15 min left. IU started making a run and none of our shots were falling. I felt we rushed too many 3 pt shots when IU closed the gap and took the lead. They pounded the ball down low and their post players had the advantage.

Tough loss as BG was up 43-33 in the 2nd half and then the Hooisers just took over the game.

Lindsey Goldsberry and Lauren Prochaska each had 17 for BG and Jen Uhl had 11 off the bench. Falcons fall to 6-2 and IU improves to 5-5.

BG heads to the East coast to play Mount St Mary's Wed and Delaware Friday.

Freak, I'll give you a little bit of pardon because of the tough loss, but you forgot one minor detail...what was the final score?

75-67

BG jumped out real quick and I thought they'd put it away, but IU got back in it and then took control. As a loss, of course it's disappointing, but this game combined with the effort vs. ND are tremendously valuable going forward for such a young team.

Doh! Yeah, TG got it there. 75-67. That was a frustrating last 10-15 min of the game but this will help build for the future. Besides, poor IU would have lost 3 years in a row without the win today.

Even when BG was in control on the scoreboard two things stood out that eventually haunted them down the stretch: missed layups and physically pushed around inside. Although we saw a large rebounding advantage early Indiana still found they were able to pound the ball inside and position well for nice shots. This allowed for whole IU offense to open up.

Additionally several BG passes were unexpected by the intended and became turnovers. We forget this team is young and hasn't played together for very long. That was evident when quick passing decisions were made. Something we took for granted last year.

I think that in February or March, this team finds a way to put away Indiana. Too young right now, and Kate wasn't Kate yesterday.

On a positive note, the women had balanced scoring again, played great defense for most of the game and showed flashes of this team being outstanding in the years to come.

Wow, is this program in good shape.

I was incredibly impressed with the team. Talk about a group of Freshmen who are completely fearless. They couldn't throw it in the ocean and that'll happen....although missing almost a dozen and a half lay-ins is concerning. Right now, my main hope is that they can catch the rest of the way up to Kate in terms of being ready. Too many times yesterday, Kate had turnovers because her teammates weren't ready to catch a pass. I also think the game could have been much different if Breske had been able to stay on the floor. I am extremely impressed with her improvement and her assertiveness on the floor. Lauren is....well, I'll put it this way. The first time I saw Kate play as a Freshmen, my first reaction was...this is a basketball player. Lauren gives me the exact same reaction. She's got basketball smarts and serious game to go with . Tracy seemed to have too many periods of time where she slipped into 1-1 mode. Curt will correct that. She's got some mad PG skills and the team is going to be in good hands once she thinks team first. You can bet Kate will be in her ear all season about that. Uhl....I like this girl's game. Not sure I liked her shot selection at times but she's another who i can tell has an incredibly high basketball IQ. Clapper....well, poor Sarah. She just hasn't had the chance to play much basketball in the last 12 months but again, you can tell by her movements and how she positions herself on the floor that there is an awful lot of upside once she gets more floor time. Chelsea Albert....wow. I was disappointed that Curt didn't have her on the floor more. I thought she played very well. I'd like to see her work on finishing close to the bucket but she's a true interior presence and her footwork on defense and in the post is amazing for such a young post player.

Ok...I could go on and on....I'm in quite a giddy mood about the team in spite of the loss. As a whole, I saw enough yesterday to now be 100% convinced that we've got a VERY good team right now and by March, well, OH MY!!!!! I am already making my plans to watch them in Cleveland on Tuesday, March 11 and Friday, March 14....and then HOPING for Saturday, March 15.

That was a great recap! Despite the youth and mistakes that come with it, this team has the opportunity to be VERY good come March. Sure there were mistakes and sloppy play at times but these Freshman don't have any fear...and that is awesome!

Just keep getting better and learn from the mistakes. We'll be fine come tourney time.

Tough loss, but encouraging. The young players on this team just haven't learned how to put away good teams on the road yet. That'll come.

Even as the lead was slipping away, I kept thinking how tough it will be for MAC teams to stay with us. Even on the night we don't play well, we might just out-talent everybody. This team is incredibly deep and versatile - very tough to match-up with all over the floor.

We're getting close to being a perennial top-25 team IMO.

Just remembering my favorite play from yesterday...

Did anyone else see that crossover Kate did early in the second half (I think) from just outside the arc? She was moving right at the top of the circle and then boom broken ankles for the woman from Indiana...

I doubt this team goes undefeated in MAC play, but I can't imagine them not having a great MAC record.

Kate's crossover and her court vision are amazing. She will allow this team to mature slowly while keeping the winning going.

More strength is needed inside against teams like IU going to basket for layups and holding ground on defense. This will not be as big an issue in the MAC but to consistently compete nationally will take more time.

I certainly think this team is a contender in the MAC right now with room to grow. Titles are not out of the question but will be hard earned with the youth on this team. Kate is the key.

Not a good second half. We missed way too many layups. Kate missed a bunch of 'em. She seemed a little out of control going in for many layups and missed 'em as a result. This team will be a very good team at the end of the year. We need some more size, though.

Curt stated at the radio show that he messed up coaching in the IU game. He said he ran some plays over & over again thinking that the ball would go in eventually. Kate wanted to get others involved but he kept calling her plays. He told us that the team was really angry  & wanted to practice. He stated that they practiced very hard & want to move on to the two games this week. Lack of the home crowd boost was one thing he mentioned. We told him to tell the team to play the noise in their heads ---we're with them home & on the road. The weather kept many people from tripping over to B town. BTN panned the crowd---looked like the one @ AA Sunday.
They'll get better remember patience/endurance :D BG __

I know the exact play you speak of. I was watching the game with my brother and said to him "I can't think of any MEN who can make that move with such ease".

She had another play later in the 2nd half where she basically got around 3 defenders using a SWEET behind the back dribble while at top speed (and Kate's top speed isn't exactly sluggish) to go right past the first and then split 2 defenders who saw nothing but a blur. All i could do was shake my head in awe. The play resulted in one of the few BG 2nd half field goals.

Defensive lapses

Post by Class of 61 »

While watching the game (and switching back and forth to the Browns Blizzard game), one thing stood out to me as a CLASSIC freshman mistake...not always getting back on D... IU had several 2 on 1 breakaway fast breaks that we weren't ready for.... I think this is another area we'll see improvement in as the season goes on.
But I DO agree with a previous post on Lauren Prochaska...the girl can flat out play!
