Ohio State and thoughts on BG

I've stayed out of this thread from the beginning, but I find it too interesting to stay away from, so here is my opinion.
I have no problem with Ohio State as a school, but I do have a problem with a few Buckeye fans and their "holier than thou" attitude. The same attitude I find in way too many fans of college athletics across the country. I'm sure there are many Bowling Green fans that have this attitude, but I have chosen not to align with them.
Ohio State is just one of many D-I programs in this beautiful state. All of which represent Ohio very well and in their own different way. I was fortunate enough to spend my collegiate career at BGSU, which has had an immense impact on my life, my wifes life and our family. I root for BGSU and wear Brown and Orange way more that I ought to. My allegiance to Bowling Green forever and always, Amen.

I can't use another word for lame. I have to keep it simple for some on here.
"Keep It Simple Stupid"
Lame: bruised, crip, crippled, defective, deformed, game, gimp, gimpy, halt, hamstrung, handicapped, hobbling, hog-tied, limping, pained, raw, sidelined, sore, stiff
Idiot: blockhead, boob, booby, cretin, dimwit, donkey, dork, dumb ox, dumbbell, dunce, dunderhead, fool, halfwit, ignoramus, imbecile, jerk, kook, meathead, mental defective, moron, nincompoop, ninny, nitwit, pinhead, pointy head, simpleton, stupid, tomfool, twit, yo-yo
Maybe that will help you make your posts a little less gimpy.
Don't you mean a little less lame?
Yeah right girl!

Maybe that is expecting too much.
My teaching style would have been along the lines of hoping one could pick up the hugely synical and satirical nature of the little jab you could throw at him

Really...those synonyms must have been pulled from a Thesauras, because those were about as acurate and helpful as that stupid thing is. Yes, lame does mean all of those things, but not in the context you were using. If I see a football play and say, "Hey, that was a sweet play," it doesn't quite come across as well if I were to say, "Hey, that was a sacharine play." Although, it would be pretty cool, or shall I say wintry, to say that from now on.

Well, so much for not making blanket, wholly unsubstantiated statements that criticize the school's academics. We wouldn't want to do that now would we?Jamie Gillis wrote: Comparing recent freshman classes, it looks as though (maybe) 20% of our students could get into osu. Instead of reciting the same talking points ("You're just jealous...We're better than you at everything...US News and World Report"), the holier-than-thou crew should first convince their former President Karen Holbrooke to stop letting the cat out of the bag. Her recent take on OSU:
""When you win a game, you riot. When you lose a game, you riot. When spring comes, you riot. African-American Heritage Festival weekend, you riot...They think it's fun to flip cars, to really have absolute drunken orgies...I don't want to be at a place that has this kind of culture as a norm."

Ummmm, go back and read through my posts. I went to BG, and I don't really care about osu one way or another. I do, however, think it's silly for BG fans to constantly attempt to knock osu's academics--every bit as silly as if Ohio State supporters felt the need to constantly talk about how bad the academic programs are at Michigan or Berkeley. Unless you're speaking to a confirmed osu hater, such nonsense just negates anything good one has to say about BG. Believe it or not, one can get the message about all the great things at BG out without having to resort to making ridiculous claims about osu in the process.JoeFalcon wrote:Well, so much for not making blanket, wholly unsubstantiated statements that criticize the school's academics. I bet MIT and Harvard are looking over their shoulder right now. "Doctor, Andy Katzenmoyer's alma mater is gaining on us! Look out!"

As for Holbrook's comments, I could care less. That's none of my concern.
And one can get the message about OSU without having to resort to making ridiculous claims about BG, as you did with the admissions speculation. Fairness goes both ways.Jamie Gillis wrote: Believe it or not, one can get the message about all the great things at BG out without having to resort to making ridiculous claims about osu in the process.

Is it ridiculous, or just an inconvenient truth that you don't want to accept? Here's data on the 2007 freshman classes pulled from each school's website.JoeFalcon wrote:And one can get the message about OSU without having to resort to making ridiculous claims about BG, as you did with the admissions speculation. Acceptance Rate
osu 52%
BG 88%
Test Scores
Middle 50% range of ACT
Ohio State 26-30
BG 19-24
Class Rank
osu
top tenth of hs class 57%
top quarter 91%
top half 99%
BG
top tenth 12%
top quarter 33%
top half 69%
What is speculation about these numbers?
Playing devil's advocate, one could draw from these numbers that since anOSU receives exponentially more applications they are able to draw "better" students. This is of course a total fallacy as standardized testing is the worst form of testing one's aptitude.Jamie Gillis wrote:Is it ridiculous, or just an inconvenient truth that you don't want to accept? Correct. These numbers are from the actual classes themselves, not the total number of people who applied. Plus, it's still more than 20% even if you go by those numbers. Nice try, though, Jamie.BGDrew wrote: Believe it or Playing devil's advocate, one could draw from these numbers that since anOSU receives exponentially more applications they are able to draw "better" students.

You can spin the data anyway you want, but it doesn't negate the fact that the overwhelming majority of our students couldn't get accpeted to osu. In that light, for BG students and alums to constantly be ripping on osu's academics is absurd.BGDrew wrote:

As for standardized testing, I don't know where you get your information, but success on the ACT/SAT is one of the most reliable predictors of success in college--far more so than gpa.

BS. How many of our students actually applied to OSU as well as BGSU? Heck in 1986, I applied to BGSU, OSU and Heidleberg and was accepted at all three....and I was 23rd in a class of 175 or so. I knew I was going to BGSU but applied at OSU since my grandpa attended and played college hoops there in the 1930's. Why Heidleberg? Not sure...my mom wanted me to apply to at least 3 different size schools and for some reason I chose Heidleberg...it was over 20 years ago.
But, with both my parents being BG grads (1964) and my older sister already enrolled at BG (87 grad), I knew where I wanted to go.
You are selling BG students short to say they couldn't get accepted at OSU.
