Rivals has him as a ** and Scout has him as a * which is pretty much meaningless as noone ther has seen even 10 seconds of film on him

A "new" verbal....
Scout and Rivals both list WR Demark Jenkins as a BG commit. He's a big kid for a WR 6'-3 or 6'-4 and 190lb. Runs a 4.5 to 4.6 40 which...as falocnboy will tell you... is painfully slow and likely to earn him the nickname "the tortoise"

The 1 star rating on scout.com is just because there is no film on him to rate him. A 1 star rating doesn't mean that is what they think he is worth, and just means they don't have enough stuff to rate him. So never take a 1 star rating to mean it is a true rating on a kid. I have never seen a DI-A prospect that scout.com has film on and can give a rating as a 1 star. It is just reserved as a basic rating for unevaluated guys.
He ran a 4.5 at the Illini football camp in the summer of 07. He must of made an impressionFlipper wrote:Though Scout lists him as having offers from MAC schools...a couple of online stories list him as having an offer from Illinois. The Scout info was from July of 07, apparently the Illini offered in August....

Brandon didn't recruit any of those guys as HC. He has recruited well though. The Niz wrote:How did scout and rivals rate Omar when we recruited him? I'm just curious. Brandon seems to find all the guys who slip through the cracks and turns them into great players, at least on offense. How underrated were guys like Omar, J5, and Magner?
Roll Along!
Omar was a fairly highly thought of (for a MAC player) 2 star recruit. He was ranked somewhere in the neighborhood of the #40 or so QB of that class. As a matter of fact his recruiting "pedigree" was very close to that of Anthony Turner, if you remember how he was looked at as a recruit. I believe he was hurt by an injury during his senior year in HS.The Niz wrote:How did scout and rivals rate Omar when we recruited him? I'm just curious. Harris was a respected player, but projected to safety by most of the larger schools. His athleticism was not in question, but nobody believed he'd be a consistent enough passer (likely didn't like his size either) to be a QB. His insistence to remain a QB was what took him to BG, and probably hurt his rankings as a recruit as well. I know OSU recruited him as a safety, but not sure if they ever officially offered him; I'm pretty sure he was fairly up front that he wanted to play QB.
Magner was from Alaska. Not many teams scout or recruit Alaska. I'm sure the recruiting ranking people knew nothing about him, nor did any of us at the time. He was just a gem of a find.

I thought there was a big story on how Magner ended up at BG? I remember Bob Davie & Mark Jones telling the story every time they did a BG game & I specifically remember them telling it during the Motor City Bowl, because they showed Cole on the sidelines pointing up at the jumbo-tron that was showing how he made his trek from Alaska to Ohio. I believe he played QB in HS while his dad was the head coach. Somehow there was a toss up between him and some other kid as to who to give the last scholarship. Cole won the vote by 1, something like 6 to 5 and both Urban Meyer & Gregg Brandon voted that he should get it.
My memory of the Omar situation is that he was rated very high after is Jr. year of high school. But then suffered a knee injury & lost a lot of interest from all the big name schools except Kansas St. So he was supposed to be going there, but the coaches changed or something weird happened & he ended up not wanting to go there. So by the time all this had happened (late in the recruiting process), a lot of schools had already given up on him or still thought that he was taken. All that was left was BG, Buffalo & some AA schools offering scholarships. Luckily he chose BG, but I do remember him considering not coming bc he didn’t like the cold weather!
My memory of the J5 situation is that he got big offers from schools like Ohio State and Purdue. However, they were recruiting him as an “athlete” which meant he would most likely be used on D. He refused to be recruited as anything other than a QB & therefore lost a lot of those offers. Not sure who BG beat out to get him, but I’m glad we did!

The thing with Omar has two parts...he had a thumb injury that scared some people off and then he committed to Kansas State. They pulled the offer really late and left him with few options...we offered him, Buffalo offered him and maybe Marshall. BG had a scholarship open because a kid named Karim....something or other...had verballed to us and then backed out late to go to Boston College. I don't know if that kid ever played a down at Boston College but he opened a spot for Omar so I'm not gonna complain.

Gregg Brandon had seen Magner at a camp in Colorado where he was the wide receivers coach at the time. He must have made an impression because he remembered his name after joining the BG staff later on.BGSUFootballFan wrote:I thought there was a big story on how Magner ended up at BG? He still goes to BG I believe, but he left the team after his freshman yr if I'm not mistaken. I didn't look like he was going to get much playing time & I think it was a stretch for BG to take him on. Probably had a lot to do with Cole.1987alum wrote:Speaking of Magner, what ever happened to his brother?
