Cameron Madlock

Post by cowboyjoe »

It has been discussed a little bit on other threads but does anyone have the reason that Madlock gets absolutely no playing time whatsoever? We need all the help we can get and he never even takes off his warm ups.

Haven't got a clue. You'd think that with Hamblet gone theres a spot for Madlock to get at least a few mins here and there.

This situation will tell me something about Orr. Is he more worried about squeezing a couple of more wins out of this team this year or is he looking to the future and getting kids like Madlock ready to play meaningful minutes next year and beyond? We already burnt his redshirt so why not get him used to playing at this level this year? Wins and loses shouldn't mean as much to this team this year as improvement does.

Madlock's RS has been blown as far as we know since he's played in some early games already. Because of that I don't know why he isn't seeing any playing time. Better he get some time under his belt now to increase his readiness for next year.

You can play in a certain number of games and still redshirt. I don't know what the exact number is, but Eric Devendorf played a lot in 9 games for Syracuse this year and is getting a medical redshirt.

Not unless the rules have changed recently that I'm not aware of. As soon as you check into a game, the redshirt is gone. Medical redshirts are a whole different story. That's where the number of games becomes a factor.

Straight from a question asked of the NCAA:

Each student is allowed no more than four seasons of competition per sport. If you were not a qualifier, you may have fewer seasons of competition available to you. You should know that NCAA rules indicate that any competition, regardless of time, during a season counts as one of your seasons of competition in that sport. It does not matter how long you were involved in a particular competition (for example, one play in a football game, one point in a volleyball match); you will be charged with one season of competition.

Personally, I'm willing to trust Coach Orr right now with the way he's handling Madlock, since I'm not there for practice or any other time other than game day. We are only 11 games into the Coach Orr era at BGSU and Madlock is only 11 games into his college career. I suspect we might see more of him with Hamblet now out of the picture. Just because we didn't see him against Illinois State doesn't mean we won't see him against E. Illinois.

If we were going to see more of Madlock, it should have been when Marschall was officially out of action for the rest of the year. Hamblet, being a guard, shouldn't mean a thing to Madlock's playing time except for the fact of just pure numbers.

I'm not positive we will be seeing more of Cam, but I think it's possible looking at it from a depth perspective. With Hamblet now being out we have very little depth. Judging from the Illinois State game, it looks like probable starters could be...

G - Joe Jakubowski
G - Darryl Clements
F - Nate Miller
F - Chris Knight
C - Marc Larson

Big E and Hamblet are out and I don't see the walk-on Matt Karaffa getting any time.

That leaves Brian Moten and Ryan Sims as the only guards on the bench. Sims already had a jump in minutes in the Illinois State game so I suspect that will continue.

So after Sims and Moten....it's just OP and Cam sitting over there on the bench.

Otis has improved his endurance over last year, but he still can't play major minutes in long stretches, not to mention the foul trouble we all know he gets into. Basically my point is that I can't see Otis being the only F/C sub for Knight, Miller and Larson. Madlock has to see some minutes.

I think the reason that we didn't see Madlock earlier in the year is because with Hamblet around, we occasionally during a game saw a small lineup with.....Nate Miller playing the post and Larson and Polk getting a rest on the bench.

I'm not sure...but these are just my observations
