Why?

Post by Falcon137 »

I posed this question in the chat this evening and wanted everyone's opinion, so I ask......

Why do people support the women's basketball team here so much? Is it because the men have been bad? People like women's hoops? Or BG fans want a winner so bad they'll come in droves for any sort of winning team?

It has to be the 3rd option, I can't believe that more people would rather watch a women's game than a men's game against an opponent like Duquense.

I pick the Dukes for several reasons.....Here are a few....from a bigger conference the A10 which is getting all sorts of National Attention and is the "sexy" conference this year with Rhode Island, Dayton, Xavier, and UMass all playing well.

They had great athletes and shooters and play a very fun style to watch. It wasn't Miami where they ran the shot clock down to 5 and kept the score in the 50's this was a style like the Suns run where they want to out score you.

I don't understand why more people would attend a women's game against ND. ****Stop reading if you are offended by people who don't like women's basketball.***

Women's basketball has nothing to offer. Great athletes? In their own way I guess, the bigs aren't athletic and the guards are to small. You never see a tremendous athletic play like an alley-oop or a tip in or a rebound where there are 3 sets of hands as high as the top of the square fighting for a board. Even women's teams that play at a fast pace are slow, it's like watching grass grow.

I know someone will say well Candice Parker can dunk......whoopee....If 1 handed finger rolls and then grabbing the rim is your thing have at it.

Sorry for the rant...but I am eager to hear why people support the women in droves and the men hardly at all.

It's not rocket science. BG loves a winner.

Back when i started going to women's games, there were maybe 10 or 15 students there, and about 4-500 total people. People don't like women's basketball more, but we have close to a legitimate top 25-program right now. When hockey was that good, hockey was sold out. When football was that good, the Doyt was sold out. If men's basketball reaches that level, the attendance will shoot way back up.

I hate women's basketball in general, but they're Falcons. I love to follow that team.

winning cures all

To tell you the truth, I don't know why I like women's basketball, I was never a fan before I got here. I do still prefer the men's game to the women's game, but I just like both, there is something about the game that I just like. Maybe its just because basketball is my favorite sport

I agree with everything this idiot said, with the exception of the last statement. Yes, winners are good, but I enjoy the women's game at the collegiate level more than I do the men's. It may seem like a little thing, but, for me, the 35 second shot clock is the most boring thing ever invented by mankind. Even though it is just five seconds, I think the 30 second clock in women's hoops makes things more exciting.

Call me crazy, but that is the way I have come to see things.

tradition

Post by falconstein »

I think there is a 4th option and it is tradition. BGSU Women have a long history of having great teams and players. This has cultivated a fan base of faculty/townspeople.... FANS.

UT has had support for its women's team for a long time- not better than the men's but a consistent fan base. Moreover, women might like to see other women play more than they like to watch the men.

Winning helps but it also helps that women do the fundamental things that make basketball so beautiful. They also tend to shoot better than men especially from the free throw line. Not scintillating stuff maybe but for some people its the real deal.

Me, I think hockey is the silliest game invented. I'd watch a high school girl's hoops game on TV before I'd go to a live NHL game but that's just me. To each his own (or her own).

It was closer to the "4" than the "500".

Fran Voll sucked me into the Women's game. We took Lori Albers up to Detroit one year for the MAC tournament. She was injured and didn't ride with the team. We hung around to watch the games and have been there ever since, except the Knoblauch years where I walked out of the only game I have ever not seen beginning to end and I stopped going to Women's games for about 5 years.

I still prefer the men's game to the women's, and college to the pro's. And Basketball to Hockey and Football. (wasn't that kinda clear from the nick?)
So in the grand scheme of things, Men's, Women's, NASCAR, watching paint dry, Baseball, Pro Basketball, Football, Poker, Hockey.

Or something like that.

Is Kate Achter or Lindsay Goldsberry gonna dunk on Big O? No.
I agree that that the men have athleticism that the women don't IN A SENSE, but thats common genetics between a man and woman. But with the teams that have been in place the last couple years, our women do things our men can't do and do some that they can better. (ie: shooting, ball handling, taking a charge, etc)

Do the women play better basketball than the men do? ABSO-f'in-LUTELY!
You can't tell me that the men shoot better from anywhere on the floor than the women do. Try, I'll refute your argument with every game's box score from the last 5 years and then take you to a game and show you who has the prettier shot. And at this point, I think the women play with more heart, more soul, more tenacity for Curt Miller than the men did for either coach. Watching Golds and Achter beat the crap out of opponents and dive on the ground for loose balls in majestical, and something I haven't seen out of the men in a long time (with the exception of Big O and N. Miller in the OU game this weekend). The basketball is pure at its finest.

And like what was mentioned before, BG has the most fairweather fans I've ever seen. Lose, and you lose interest. Win, and you gain the people's attention... for a little bit.

If you like PURE BASKETBALL, the women's team is the way to go. If you want a flashy dunk once or twice a contest, sure, its more likely to see it at a men's game. It's a shame our athletic department doesn't promote them enough to get people to see that. This women's team is STILL a contender in the MAC, despite the turnover from graduation. Go watch for yourself.

If I hear one argument about women shooting better I'm gona puke.

Women shoot free throws better, thats it. Don't you think it's a tad easier to finish around the bucket when there is no one to swipe it off the board or come from the week side and put it in the 4th row? Or the fact that good ball movement in the women's game can cripple a D because they aren't all that fast therefore it's easier to get an open shot.

The argument that it's better basketball is also crazy, that's like saying the Div. 4 HS Boys Championship game is better than the Div. 1.

Well, so far this year our women's team is shooting .362 from 3, while the men are at an even .300 - and that's with a ton of freshman and sophomores playing. Last year, the men shot .350 and the women shot .380. I could probably go back a few more years and see the same results.

Tell you what, let's have a 3-pt shooting contest. I'll bring Goldsberry, Taylor, and Pontius. You can bring any 3 from the men's team. You can decide how much money you'd like to pay me after the guys get housed.

Look, in general, women's basketball is not as fun to watch as men's basketball - I'm with you there. But don't discount them completely. In the areas that aren't based on athleticism, they are just as skilled, if not more so, than the men. A lot of people don't like that BG now has a better women's program than men's - I think that's a pretty stupid attitude, but whatever floats your boat.

Here's an idea - if you don't like it, don't watch it, and shut the hell up about it.

To reference what was said two posts ago:
"If I hear one argument about men's basketball being better than women's I'm gona puke."

Seriously, who gives a damn. Some people like the men's game, some people like the women's game, and plenty of people like both. There's no reason to come onto a message board and trash the women's game based on factors that are beyond the control of anyone involved.

I could see someone posting something like this about men's v. women's lacrosse simply because the game is different and the rules are different (no hitting, different type of equipment, different checks allowed, different shots allowed and different game speed in general), but this is just stupid.

But hey, that's just my opinion.

I'm not saying women can't shoot, I'm saying it's far easier. In the men's game it's much tougher if you're a great a shooter. You have to be able to pull up off the dribble and be able to elevate above your defender to hit shots. It's much tougher in men's basketball to shoot a higher percentage.

Our men's team isn't the best team to take shooters from, how about nation wide?

I'll take Ellington from UNC, Roberts from Dayton, and Shan Foster from Vanderbilt. Against any 3 women.

Our men's team has been horrific shooters for the past few seasons, but on the whole I'm not sure how they compare throughout college basketball. I suppose women could shoot 3s as well as men, so I'd expect that the numbers are probably similar...the ladies definitely shoot free throws better, so perhaps they shoot 3s better as well, not really certain.

Personally I don't watch it, because I cannot stomach basketball when you sap all the athleticism out of it. I rarely ever attended my HS teams games when I was in school for the same reason. I'm glad to see them doing well, but it's not my cup of tea.
