Cheap Shots and Classless
Cheap Shots and Classless
1. Regardless of how bad the team played, this was the perfect storm as nothing went BG's way. BG receives 2 personal fouls for a questionable out of bounds hit in the first quarter and another for a late hit in the third quarter. However; on the play that Tyler was injured, he was going to be hit whether he had the ball or not. There was clearly enough time after the ball was released to pull off. No penalty called. The hit on Smith in the third quarter was clearly blatant helmet to helmet contact. No penalty called. Even the announcers mentioned this fact as they anticipated it as a highlight play. First thing this morning, I see it on the highlights.
2. How many teams or coaches with the score 56-7 late in the fourth quarter would still have their starting quarterback in? Most teams would have pulled the first team much sooner. Totally classless.

Cheap Shots ans Classless
Who's crying? I already stated about the bad play. What point was Tulsa trying to make? That they are classless? Do you thing BG or anyone else in the MAC would have done the same?
Re: Cheap Shots ans Classless
I lived in Oklahoma for a brief period of time. It does not surprise me. It's how they like their football. The Sooners run up the score any chance they get and their fans love it. The entire state is messed up, I mean they still drink 3.2 beerBG71 wrote:Who's crying? I already stated about the bad play. What point was Tulsa trying to make? That they are classless? I think Paul Smith and the Tulsa offense were attemping to set some records, like 5,000 yards of offense and having a 3,000 yard passer with a 1,000 yard rusher and three 1,000 yard receivers. I can't fault them for attempting to make history. Besides, they had one WR that needed yards and they threw it to him often in the second half. We should have figured that out and still couldn't stop it.

IMHO I think that whole "Don't run the scoreboard" because these are only College "kids" is kind of silly. I can understand that in Pee-Wee and even High School ball. But at the college level, these are young men and they should be able to handle a shellacking as such. Once they walk out of the halls of ivy, they are going to be in some stiff competition. Japan's not going to say "Gee, we just took over Ford as the #2 auto manufacturer in the US...But let's slow down a bit. We don't want to hurt the Shareholders and the UAW's feelings." Screw that...They are thinking "BRING ON GM!" Sometimes you get the bear and sometimes the bear gets you.
1. Most importantly, not all of us drink 3.2 beer. As archaic as our "blue laws" remain (you can't get wine or hard alcohol on Sundays other than at a bar, same on election days), you can get real beer at liquor stores - just not grocery or gas stations. Just sayin', not everyone things 3.2 Bud Light counts as beer.
2. OU. I have a love hate relationship with the Gooners. We suffered a blowout at their hands earlier this year, but they did not run up the score. We were simply totally outclassed and by the 3rd QT had nothing left. However, they also have an incentive to run up the score: beating Tulsa by less than 21 could hurt their national ranking and cost them a shot at the championship (unless they choke 2x later on). Maybe a crappy deal, but it is what it is and this isn't the little leagues.
3. Blowout? Yes. But if you actually look at the stats we stopped playing football in the 4th QT. Sorry if that offends you, but we had a total of 68 yards in the 4th. We had just barely over our average offensive output for the game. I'm really sorry things got so ugly, but if we chose to press the issue I'm afraid it would have been much worse.
What's more...
A. Pall Smith (starting QB) was taken out with 312 passing yards. He needed 300 to break the NCAA record held by Ty Detmer for 14 consecutive games with 300+ yards of passing (every game this season).
B. Clay was taken out after going over the 1,000 yard mark for receiving on the year. That put Tulsa with 3 - 1,000 yard receivers, 1 - 1,000 yard rusher, and a 5,000 QB. The first time in NCAA history that has happened.
C. Adams was taken out just after crossing the 100 yard mark for the game. A 100 yard game is a big deal for most backs and he needed 1 or 2 more carries to hit the mark.
I'm sorry, but when guys have chances to set NCAA records by staying in an extra 5 minutes you let them do it. I can't imagine a coach not letting his QB break an all time NCAA passing record because the other team failed to show up to play. I'm sorry it was lopsided and would not support just trying to break the margin of victory record, but to get Smith the record do what you must. Again, I'd be happier if it would have been a better game - but because your team was either entirely outclassed or entirely unprepared don't call my team classless.

Yeah I spent 2 and a half months out there. I know where to get the real beer. Just took a day or two to figure it out.JesseTU wrote:1. Most importantly, not all of us drink 3.2 beer. I was living in OKC last year when Boise beat them. That was pretty hilarious. Listening to all the radio talk leading up to the game, they acted like they were playing a seventh grade team.
I do think OU runs up the scores on teams and has been doing it since the 80's. As for you guys I have no idea, you had records to get last night.

I think you have been in DC a little too long as you have little to no perception of reality.CapitalFalcon wrote:IMHO I think that whole "Don't run the scoreboard" because these are only College "kids" is kind of silly. Coaches with class don't leave their starters in the whole game with a 49 point lead, running a hurry-up, and throwing the ball in ANY division of football. Period.

I think it was just as much about our recruiting as well. We were trying to make a splash and maybe influence some kids. I'm not 100% happy with Paul being in the game late, but I also know that we have a hard time recruiting sometimes. We need to do whatever it takes to influence kids.Warthog wrote:I think Paul Smith and the Tulsa offense were attemping to set some records, like 5,000 yards of offense and having a 3,000 yard passer with a 1,000 yard rusher and three 1,000 yard receivers. FWIW, TU suffered the worst loss ever, giving up over 100 to Houston in the 1960's. So we know all about running up the score.

I called out RUTS last night. I was LIVID that Smith would play the whole game.
I've come down a little from last night. My emotions were a touch high last night - which is unusual for me. Must have been the Cab.
Anyhoo, this is water under the bridge. Let the offseason begin. Best of luck to Tulsa and their fans.

I can see the scenario for B. That is a very nice feat. I can see an argument either way for A. It is an NCAA record, but it is one that no one besides Detmer or Smith care about.JesseTU wrote:1. One hundreds yards is not uncommon enough that he needed to stay in. It is more common for a back to be removed when they are close to 100, than to keep them in the game during a mauling.
Are records more important that sportsmanship? It was to Tulsa in this case. Would BG have done the same if roles were reversed? I can't answer that one.
tiznow:
As the coach you would have denied a college kid (QB Paul Smith) his only chance at holding a record because the opponent was playing like crap? Why punish our kid because yours failed to show up. The guy played at Tulsa and probably will not play on Sundays, not exactly bragging rights for the rest of his days. But to get into the 5000 club and break 2 other records is actually something for Paul Smith and for Tulsa.
To deny him or his team these records because you did not play well enough? Screw that. Going into the 4th he needed 30 yards or so to get the record - you wanted him to stop 30 yards short... For what? To win by 49 instead of 56? I'd be hearing the same crap anyway.
Hell, if we pulled our starters at half-time and down it and punted it could have easily ended 35-0 the way things were going. Then you'd be calling us condescending jerks with no class. I've been avoiding saying this, but your team simply sucked last night. They were either totally outclassed, under coached, or not prepared. That's why you got blown out, not because Tulsa is a bunch of meanies. Sorry other BG fans, but I'm getting annoyed.

Oh, and I'm willing to guess that the QB at Hawaii, Texas Tech, and a few other big guns would like to have "*threw for 300 yards every game his senior season" in the media guide. Just because you don't care about the record doesn't make it less meaningful. Hey, maybe we could take back the last touchdown and revert to 290 yards and add *except the game against Bowling Green because they weren't good enough to leave our starters in past the first half. Would that be better?
Sheesh, sry to be a jerk but I thought I made my point very well earlier. Best of luck next year BG. I hope your QB is ok.

Maybe you didn't read my post closely. I said I could see the argument either way on Paul Smith's individual record. Like I said it is an individual record. The other was a record for the team. The only one I said definitely could not see was keeping a running back in to get 100 yards.JesseTU wrote:tiznow:

The stats and game log do not support your entire spin. Clay has 1024 yards receiving for the year yet caught his last pass deep into the 4th qtr for 13 yards. Thus it appears he was not taken out immediately after achieving this so called milestone that I'm sure will be remembered for some time.JesseTU wrote: 3.What's more...

Adams gained 112 yards for the game. His last run at the BG 30 was for 5 yards. So again it appears he stayed a little later to achieve a 110 yard day. Either that or the Tulsa stat man was a little slow.
Just trying to bring some solid numbers to your remarks. However, Tulsa deserved this victory. BG was schooled for a number of reasons. I'm not going to call it classless or anything that harsh; however, I felt the last drive was not necessary with all the key starters. For that matter a number of the #1 defenders were still in the game at the end against a BG offense led by its #2 QB and #3 and #4 RBs.
